Pearl Has Zero Credibility Now

The truly amazing part of this to me is the fact that Pearl KNEW he had to keep his methods absolutely clean due to his history of whistle blowing. There are so many Illinois fans rejoicing over this it's laughable. How he could have taken this chance is beyond me. I suppose that the seductive powers of success and astromical money at this level of athletics are too strong to withstand, even when the consequences of getting caught are so great. It's too bad- I love Pearl, the way his teams compete, and the energy to the sport he brings. Now we are at the mercy of the NCAA thanks to his terrible judgment.

Loses credibility of what exactly? You lose credibility of reading comprehension as well.

No one will trust anything he says now. He will have a stigma from now on as a cheater and liar. It makes his reason for turning in Illinois for cheating as "doing the right thing" a complete joke. That's just what I can think of off the top of my head.

So you expect a coach that has led us to legitimate NCAA appearances, none of which were a result of ineligible players to get fired for contacting recruits too much? I think the 1.5 million dollar hit, and the assistant docks, with the 1 year of off-campus recruiting ban, and the embarrassment is suffice for this.

Get your panties out of you ass.

Yes it sucks we got caught. There is a huge difference between making extra phone calls and giving a kid cash and committing academic fraud. Yes Pearl screwed up, but your a loon if you think he should be fired over this.

Grapevine has it that we have been giving out cash. The extent of the penalties indicate a pretty severe situation, not solely warranted by Pearl's lying.

I hope to God, I'm wrong. But a few posters that called this several months ago say the worst is yet to come. FWIW.

I bet you'll still be cheering for him to be successful this upcoming season.

You should take a stand and root against the basketball team since the head coach embarrasses you so much.

I'll always support the team and the players. I will not support Bruce Pearl. And if you don't think this is embarrassing to the University, you've got problems.

Man, some posters on this board are such drama queens. Yes, he loses some credibility, is this a huge deal for the basketball program, no, for now it isn't. Combined with Football, this could be down the road.

Not sure at this point, what we know warrants someone to be let go, or that he should step aside. Seriously, in all honesty, do all of you that are calling for Bruce's head, not realize that almost EVERY coach in the country is making too many phone calls and purchasing phone by the minute so they won't get caught.

The better question would be, why were they even looking into the basketball program in the first place. If it was the Selby recruitment, one would believe that Kansas is part of the investigation as well.

Everyone take a chill pill and relax and quit being SO dramatic.

The fact is, this is only beginning. The NCAA may very well find things that Pearl hasn't tearfully admitted to yet.

This isn't unexpected at all. To recruit on the level they've recruited on recently you have to get close to the line and most who know anything about college basketball, this staff in particular, know they have no problem in doing that. Nor do I. The problem I have is the lying, unacceptable.

Pearl was contrite at the press conference and no one can doubt his sincerity. He showed his players and UT students and alumni how to handle adversity with class. Of course, antisemites will still bash Coach Pearl just like they have the whole time he's been here.

Wow, not sure you had to go there, I don't think it has anything to do with his religion. Seriously?

This is one of the dumbest threads I have ever read. I am glad the bare bottom is hanging out for everyone to see....

Paying a recruit and giving his parents money is the exact same thing as sending extra text messages....

So you just contradicted yourself. The fact is this is only the beginning. The NCAA MAY FIND... if it was fact they would find. Now you're just speculating.

I'm with you 100% on this. If it had just been contacting recruits too much, I wouldn't have nearly as much of a problem.

So what is embarrassing about making extra phone calls to recruits? He lied, so what. No one will even care about this in two weeks. Clean yourself up.

It's the lying I have a problem with. Making extra phone calls to recruits is fairly common in the college basketball world. We just got caught....

In all honesty, cheating is cheating. Paying players may be more severe...but it's still breaking rules.

Not trying to make defend Pearl here as every fan should be extremely dissappointed by his actions, but there are definitely varying levels of cheating. Calling recruits more often than you are supposed to far less severe than paying them. The terrible issue here is he lied about it and that's extremely disgraceful.

I'm sorry for not drawing pictures for some of our "special" members. It is fact that this is only beginning. The NCAA investigation is just now beginning. No one knows if they will find anything else. I was pointing out that that was a possibility.

I love it . The old "every body does it excuse" so that makes anything ok. You need to get a grasp of reality.

i think its obvious you need to get a grasp of reality. here's a crash course, the fact is every major program does it. if you think this is the same as paying players you should be kicked in the teeth
