Pearl vs Barnes

That’s fair but let’s not act like Barnes loves UT and wasn’t trying to get the UCLA job. He’s a hired coach. This is just another job to him. He doesn’t bleed orange. And yes, I think this team gets bounced sweet 16 like all his other teams do and if they don’t I will be gladly shocked and say I was wrong.

He does more than Bruce ever did. And after what he’s accomplished at UT he’s now s card carrying VFL.

Where is my personal attack in you? I stated a fact. He tried to leave. They passed. He stayed. Nowhere did I insult you.
He didn't entertain leaving until UCLA came calling. He didn't seek the job. One of the 2 bluest of blue bloods offered him. Why wouldn't he be interested? That's a dream job for a successful gym rat coach like Barnes. He's coached a lot of places, and every one of them got his best. We're observing it first hand. Thank goodness Randy Boyd stepped in and kept him here. Barnes has turned down both Kentucky and UCLA in the last 20 years.

Pearl would still be here if UT ad had backed him over a stupid bbq.

Barnes would be at UCLA if they had offered more.

I haven’t been able to have an elite 8 party at my house under Barnes yet. Did under Pearl.

Hope this year I finally can.
Pearl would still be here had he simply told the truth. Bottom line, it was a minor recruiting violation. Pearl made it what it was by blatantly lying during the investigation. Don't lay it at the feet of the administration. They were threatened with a major violation from the NCAA, that still had a little clout at the time. You are better than that.

Who do you think has done a better job as coach here? Personally I gotta go with Barnes the only thing Pearl has over Barnes is he got us to the elite eight. Barnes might do something this season that Pearl never did in getting us to the Final Four along with earning a number one seed. Yes an argument could be made that Pearl made our basketball program relevant again after years of wondering in the wasteland but didn’t Jerry Green also do that he just never gets much credit. Plus Pearl is a lying sleeze bag, Barnes isn’t and has way more class than Pearl. I have to admit I enjoyed the Pearl years but I cannot stand the guy now.

Mears

Barnes

Pearl

DeVoe

Green

Martin

O'Neill

Peterson

Houston

Tyndall

Wettig

This is my list since I moved to Knoxville in 1969 and started following the men's basketball program.

If it's still 5-6 years down the road, Vescovi could slide into it IF he starts coaching next year. I predict he'll draw at least one play tomorrow
This! I think Vescovi will have a better career coaching. He's played under Barnes, and being an assistant under him for a few years taking the helm when Barnes retires could work. A very intelligent person, and hiring a VFL.

Regarding Barnes and Pearl. I'm of the opinion that you can like both for what they brought/countinue to bring to Tennessee basketball. The consistency in the top 25 over the last 15 years and top 5 rankings. Pearl screwed up and doubled down on a lie which was beyond stupid, but he went onto Auburn to have success. However, if you like stability and knowing your program will be competitive without getting into trouble, Barnes is your guy.

Not based on results. Pearl career win % is 72%, Barnes at 66%. Pearl at 60% in the dance, Barnes is .500. Same amount of final fours, Pearl has more elite 8s and more sweet 16s.

No knock on Barnes.

I don't think that including Pearl's stats at a D2 school makes much sense. Hell, might as well give him a national title while you're at it.

Looking solely at D1, Pearl's winning percentage is .669 and Barnes' is .661. Barnes has eight Sweet Sixteen's to Pearl's five and one more Elite Eight than Pearl (albeit one of Pearl's did come at Tennessee).

Pearl was a great coach at UT and is obviously still a great coach for Auburn. His resume does not compare with Barnes', though, and there is simply no question that Tennessee is in a much better place as a program right now than they were at any point under Pearl which is really saying something since Pearl had Tennessee playing some very good basketball.

They were in the NCAAT 3 years prior to his arrival, there’s no excuse to be 0/4 in todays game. The ACC has also turned into a joke, that’s like the 4th best league, maybe 5th, trying to use that in his defense actually does the opposite.
Yeah, one fluke team on a play in game.

They should have got in on a play in when they won like 25 two years ago under Forbes.

Truth is that if Forbes hadn’t been an assistant under Pearl, nobody would mention him as a possible Barnes replacement.

This isn’t something that will show up in the record books, but Barnes hasn’t brought in a bunch of guys with questionable character like Pearl did. Barnes has brought in guys who are easy to root for and seem like good young men. That matters too.

Year 4 and still no NCAAT, weird definition of “doing very well”.
Also, whenever the time comes (I hope it’s not soon) , UT will be able to get a very accomplished head coach. It won’t be a mid major or a coach of a high major that hasn’t done anything at that level. We got an accomplished coach with Barnes , largely due to favorable circumstances and connections (along with recent evidence of what what’s capable of here), and will be on a great position to do the same. Maybe Kim English will have done some good things with Providence then, as many say that’s who Barnes has groomed. IDK. I just hope it’s not an issue for a few more years.

Barnes has proved the Tennessee job is one of the best in the country. You dont have to be a ringmaster anymore or cut corners on the rule book to have a successful program. Id be very disappointed if, when the time comes to replace Barnes, Tennessee doesnt pursue some of the best coaches in the country. Id not saying Bill Self or a Mark Few type but the program will attract better candidates based on how Rick has built his program. The culture here is 2nd to none.
Yes we as Vols have it exceptionally good right now across the board. Let's hope we can continue and build on our current success.

Having an Elite 8 party is corny as hell. Nobody does that.

That's Olympic level mental gymnastics right there on Bruce's departure which also explains most of your other posts...lmao.

The whole “Barnes almost left for UCLA” narrative cracks me up to this very day.

Guess they forgot about Bruce flirting with the Memphis job multiple times while he was here.
Not to mention Pearl accepted the head coach position for a different SEC school, and he's been there for a longer time than he was at UT...and yet a certain poster wants to use the "bleed orange" angle in this discussion. Pshaw

I'm not gonna knock Pearl. He came here when we were in deep, deep trouble. Others didn't want to come. It was a very bad time. We were picked LAST his first year and he won the SEC. Over the next few years he took us where we had never been before. He left us much better off than he found us. The man can flat coach. He is definitely one of the top 3 coaches in the SEC. Auburn went from a cellar dweller to a contender in one year and they will stay there as long as Pearl is there.
Pearl didn’t win the SEC his first year, we won the SEC East.

Also Pearl left us better but not as good as he should have given he s*** the bed on the way out. He also inherited a better situation than Barnes. Pearl got more out of his first team but also inherited maybe the best shooter in UT history and a core team that Buzz Peterson woefully underachieved with.
