Pearl's Already Gone: The Exit Strategy Hypothesis

It's amazing how badly the situation was botched over the last few years.

Given the sense of betrayal that an enormous chunk of the UT fan base felt when Dickey left UT to coach Florida, it's amazing that we hired him back here as AD. It would be like LSU hiring Nick Saban as their AD in 10 more years. My dad still can't say his name without getting spitting mad.

More evidence that the age-old practice of sticking the old football coach in the AD's chair to gladhand on the rubber chicken circuit is outdated.

The only thing that would have made the sales job harder is if the stadium and football offices had been infested with asbestos and lead paint and were scheduled for demolition prior to the season.

And "Oh, by the way, we're raising ticket prices by 15% and moving people's seats that they've had for generations."

Interesting theory but I don't buy it. There hasn't been any new info in months and the facts of the situation haven't changed since prior to the season. Imo if Pearl didn't get canned in September, there's nothing new to change Hamilton's position now.

I disagree. The timing issue is HUGE.

If Pearl makes it through the spring, we'll probably have him for the forseeable future thereafter; show-cause or no show-cause.

Additionally, for my $.02, I'd like to see Rick Byrd get a shot.

The man can flat-out coach. In ten years that Belmont's been in the A-10, he's won four titles and, subsequently, been to the NCAA four times. Wonder how many SEC schools have been to the Dance less than four times in the past ten years?

It's not a bad idea. If Hamilton's still employed, he'll try for a home run hire to deflect the slime. However, if that doesn't work out, Byrd might be an interesting candidate.

DD was Bob Woodruff's hand picked replacement. DD had played under Woodruff at Florida. Their tie to UT was that Woodruff played at UT under the General.

I don't know anything about all these different possibilities and don't have any inside info, but if Pearl isn't a dead man walking he is certainly wasting a good imitation of one.

Does not make any sense to accept the penalties handed down by Hamilton, Slive and the 20 minute blasting each game day the entire season by the press just to resign at the end of the season, sorry. The possibility that Pearl, Hamilton, Slive and the NCAA already agreed upon the penalties months ago does make sense. This is big business, nothing is left to chance.

This is not just a Dickey thing. It goes back before him and it has continued past him. Check out the hires of MH! I don't know your history (read age), but Tennessee has been very consistent in this area. So, edit all you like. History is a great predictor of the future.

So if Pearls stays we should expect more AA investigations?

Dickey was a good coach and an adequate Football AD. The problem was, he did not realize that there were other sports in the Athletic Department. MH is a much better AD than Dickey was.

Or not. 5 years no AA investigation. One year investigation. That's the history.

the violations and investigation didn't just pop up recently. They've been going on since 2007 according to the letter and the cookout was in 2008

And if we're going to use "history" as the litmus test for future expectations, then it seems reasonable to expect:

his taping of a phone call with a recruit without his knowledge,

the committing similiar violations (inviting recruit's to his home) while at Milwaukee,

dishonesty and betrayal even in the most intimate of relationships

willfully disregarding or disobeying 'AA regulations - and not only then lying about, but attempting to enlist the aid of others to cover-up that lie (i.e. collusion) - to your boss, your school, your conference and your governing body

and only once no alternative course of action otherwise remained, feigning remorse and expressing false contrition - only to then commit additional illegal acts, again, shortly thereafter

Oh yeah, we should totally fight to keep this guy and all that history proves he will afford us.

Like I've said before - those defending Pearl and who are so angered at his ouster have no one to blame but Pearl himself. Period. You may be foolishly willing to overlook or seek to mitigate what he has done, but fortunately, others are not.

In two weeks (give or take) this will all be a mute point.

Don't confuse him with the facts

WOW! Too bad...he wasn't at Illinois for long but he laid the foundation for their run to the title game. Plus if Tennessee would of hired him then it would have been a a lot longer before the Kansas job opened.
He probably would have stayed here.

This is true, Pearl has totally brought this on himself, but it's still kind of sad to see all this coming to what looks like the end. It's been a fun ride having a competitive basketball team over the past six years.

Too bad that Pearl couldn't abide by NCAA rules and even worse that he has no integrity and lied about minor violations. However, I agree that it is time to move on and go with another coach and try to get the NCAA sanctions minimized as much as possible.

I was just piling on to the general unrest of the fanbase. Playing off the previous hypothetical.

Yes, but much of that demographic refuses to acknowledge UT bball has existed for generations so they wouldn't grasp people having same seats for generations
