Penn State scandal (merged)

"I wish I could have done more."- Joe paterno

Is in bold print in headlines around the world and you call it nitpicking.
Posted via VolNation Mobile

I'm not questioning what he said. But unlike some people around here, I dont know exactly what he's talking about.

It could be that he's saying he wished he had been in a position to do more and for some reason could not, it could be that he simply regrets the inaction of not calling the cops, or it could mean nothing.... just something somebody says in a circumstance like this. Who knows?

I've heard the same thing at funerals and I've heard doctors say the same thing, pretty common phrase. I'm sure Paterno regrets everything that has happened, I wouldnt make any more of that than it is.

Local LE here

Hey CV - thanks for what you do. I'm a Bama fan because I was allowed to meet Coach Bryant at an young age, because my Dad was a LEO.

Anyway that has nothing to do with this thread. This does: I used to respect Joe Pa and the Penn State program. This is almost surreal, it's so awful.

I'm a father, and I can't imagine not doing physical harm to this Sandusky guy if I were to meet him, if these "alleged" crimes are true, which it seems they may very well be.

God, is there ever any good news anymore? And these idiot PSU students rioting - my God, is there no thinking youth left? I guess this riot picked up all the other dumbasses that weren't out occupying Wall Street.

Urg. Sometimes reality is worse than the latest horror movie.

sure it's been pretty awkward for mrs. sandusky this week.

Wonder if it was "awkward" for her when she picked up the phone to have a chat with one of the victims right before he was set to testify in front of the grand jury.

?

Joe Paterno? You realize the standing he had before all this right?

Yes I do. But what you nor I know, is what kind of deal was made in 99 that caused the DA to shut down the investigation, drop the charges, and allowed Sandusky to retain his pension, access to university facilities, and emeritus status. You want to pin that on Paterno too?

When all these details surface, and they will, you guys are going to find out Paterno washed his hands of this thing a long time ago and did his best to distance himself.

That is exactly correct and exactly the freaking problem. Good gracious. I've never dealt with this level of incompetence.

You do realize we are talking about a guy who wouldn't let his bosses force him out a few years ago, right? No way on earth will I believe Paterno was powerless in all this. The fact that he has been allowed to be a figurehead with the title and salary of head coach merely to accumulate career wins, tells us who runs the show

As to the rest of it.

So the first bold neither of us know, but you have the bottom bold figured out and no one else does.

You guys are hilarious, you act like Paterno was the Don Corleone of Penn State.

I repeat, some deal was made in 99 to protect Sandusky. The police walked away from the whole thing even though Sandusky had admitted his crimes in a taped conversation to the mother of the victims, the DA dropped the charges then 6 years later went missing (was murdered), so its pretty damned obvious that there is more at play here than Joe Paterno and what he knew or didnt do.

I'm guessing in light of whomever made this deal to cover everything up caused Paterno severe distress, but by that time there was nothing he could do about it or maybe he just could have opted to bring the university he loved and worked at for 50 years to its knees, provided he had the information to act on which is something else NOBODY KNOWS! lol

When I hear "I wish I had done more"(what Paterno said or "I wish I could have done more", I hear 2 diff things. Paterno's statement implies he had the POWER to do more and did not. When people say "I wish I could have done more" they may refer to a drug addict they tried to help. If they say Your comparison to a funeral isn't a good one. Paterno had the chance to do more, your examples are with people who tried to do more and were unsuccessful. If someone says "I wish I had done more", it means they had the chance, perhaps they witnessed an accident and refused to call 911 and let the person suffer and die.

I'd say Don Corleone is a perfect description of Jo Paterno at PSU. Also, Paterno look all torn up Tuesday night leading a pep rally in his yard.

Am I wrong in saying that Paterno's power at PSU is the only reason he was allowed to stay on when they wanted him gone? If he is that powerful, he was powerful enough to keep people quiet about Sandusky. To pretend Paterno was an innocent pawn in this game is absurd. If he was forced to go along with a deal to cover for a child abuser, wouldn't a strong leader with moral fiber just step down as opposed to being a part of it?

Thats pretty funny. I'm talking about 99 and you FF to Paterno in his front yard two days ago. lol

I guess he's supposed to appear totally destroyed, which is counter to everything I read about him, but you guys are the experts. haha

Joe Paterno could get Happy Valley renamed Paternoburg if he wanted.
You're not giving him his due as to what he could and couldn't do at PSU.

Jesus Christ man, did you read what I posted? Here it is again, so try this one more time.

She LIED about it. He brought it up. Read before you respond kid.

At the time the story broke, that was the furthest thing from knowable, according to the reports and the Duke Lacrosse Team was raked across the coals. That is why someone thought the situation was analogous; and that is why my response applied. I will continue to do as I please, Mr. Adult.

If the university had wanted to retire Paterno as football coach, they could have done that. But this silliness about "keeping people quiet about Sandusky" is pretty ridiculous, unless you are putting Paterno at the very center of the cover up. I doubt thats the case, more likely he woke up one morning, realized what happened, and elected to keep his distance praying the whole thing wouldn't resurface. Penn State is taking a big fall, its happening later than sooner. I'm guessing Joe Pa didn't want to be the man responsible for all this. Ironic, I know.

No it doesnt.

Really? If your neighbor gets robbed and you weren't home, would you say "I wish I'd done more"? What could you have done? Why say that? You would be more likely to say "I wish I could have done more", as in I wish I was in the position to do more. You don't agree with that?

The Duke Lacrosse team was also crucified in the court of public opinion and the lives of 20 or so students were put on hold or temporarily ruined because of exactly whats going on here with all this Paterno crap.

It was perfect analogy, only an idiot would disagree.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but did you not post earlier that he said that yesterday because he had the full weight of events set in? You did. That would mean he would likely be more emotional now than in 99, since he would understand that a score of kids were hurt, not just one. With all do respect, you are contradicting yourself sir.

LOL you can go on with this mental masturbation of what does "I wish" means all you like. Nobody knows what is in Paterno's feeble mind, what he knew, or what he believed he was capable of or what he believed he should have done so be my guest.
