Penn State scandal (merged)

ESPN legal analyst Roger Cossack (sp?) was on Mike and Mike this morning and touched on this very topic. He said that Joe Paterno did what was required of him in a strictly legal aspect, and would not have been required to do more. The main reasoning behind this was because Joe Pa did not physically observe the actions taking place, and the allegations were only hearsay (albeit hearsay from an eyewitness account, hearsay nonetheless). If he had seen the assault taking place with his own eyes, then he would have been legally obligated to inform the police.

Thanks for the clarification on the legal requirements. I couldn't understand why he was legally off the hook, and now I do. (And I'll bet someone did some research at the time to find out exactly how much he had to do, and no more.)

Nauseating. After someone technically does their duty in this manner, how do they then sleep at night, knowing that no one has followed up with the authorities? How do you brush your teeth in the morning while looking in the mirror?

I don't know. I'm not. My assumption is, because it is hard for me to address that because I am not a fan of Penn State football, I am all Vols, is that the fans support the team, because it is not these kids fault these idiots did this.
Sorry, I meant a PSU fan in general... not you specifically.

Depends on how the media handles it. It's up to ESPN at this juncture.

And they're real classy bunch sometimes.

This is bigger than ESPN. This will hang over Paterno forever. Punching that Clemson player is in the first paragraph of every story written about Woody Hayes thirty years later, and that was insignificant compared to this. And there was barely any media at all to fan the flames about that back then.

Former Penn State Linebacker Lavar Arrington shared his thoughts.

and this is what many of us don't understand about the graduate assistant. I know I don't.

Ive always thought Arrington was a good dude, straight shooter kind of guy. This proves it.

Im with him 100%. Just cannot understand how you dont do something about that when you see it happening.

Im glad there are guys from the PSU factory who are willing to say that.

I dont know what is going to happen to the program after this, but there will be a down fall from it.

On a sidenote: What happens to the Big Ten Championship Trophy now? The "Stagg-Paterno Big Ten Championship Trophy". Im about to win that thing, and I no longer want that old mans name on it.

that is the biggest difference I see in sports these days, the Media. So many things are different because of the 100%, 24hrs a day, in your face coverage.

This will not end well for Paterno

Jopa should be smart enough to resign immediately. Like before Sat. He let it go on past 2002 and this guy came to the practices with a little boy. Nobody is stupid, he has done this many more times before then and after. Jopa runs PSU and he allowed it to happen. You think if Jopa said NO YOU WON'T COME BACK EVER that that guy wouldn't do it. So he condoned it. This is really sad. Jopa needs to be FIRED if he doesn't step down. If you have kids then you know that's what has to happen.

That statement to me shows this was a cover up from Joe PA all the way to the top. It's obvious the GA was scared of the career ramifications if he went outside the "family". Some janitors said the same thing, saw this happening and said nothing for fear of their jobs.

It's a pattern of protection from Joe Pa all the way to the top that has lasted years. Joe Pa needs to go today!

From the PennLive board....

"The attorney general has determined that Paterno and Spanier did everything the law required. But a university president must be held to a higher standard. The most famous coach in college football history must be held to a higher standard.

Since taking the reins in 1995, Graham Spanier has done great things for Penn State. He has built world-class facilities, added a law school, increased fundraising and strengthened the school’s reputation as a center for research.

But a leader who lacks moral authority has nothing. By doing the absolute minimum when hearing potentially serious allegations, by doing more to protect the school’s reputation than to protect children, Spanier has lost that moral authority.

Joe Paterno is a different story. That doesn’t let him off the hook. He should have done more. A man who has spoken with such affection for 46 years about “his kids” failed real kids when they needed him most.

But this incident does not undo a lifetime of achievement.

Some people will argue that Joe should step down immediately as well. Given what we know now, we don’t agree. Paterno should be allowed to finish out the year and retire with the honor and admiration he has earned since taking over as head coach in 1966.

It might always be honor with an asterisk, admiration with a shake of the head. Joe will have to live with that.

There will be other people who argue that Graham Spanier and Joe Paterno should not be punished at all. After all, they obeyed the law.

Eight little boys would have said: that simply isn’t enough."

Paterno has a press conference today, I think. Media have been requested to not ask questions about the scandal. Such garbage.

Yeah, the fact that the janitors were apparently afraid of losing their jobs for reporting child rape is a pretty telling detail about the culture at a football program that was so aggressive about promoting themselves as the Last Pure School That Does It The Right Way.

Completely tarnishes everything he accomplished. Instead of celebrating decades of success and long standing honor and tradition, he will be known for having done next to nothing to stop this guy, and indeed in a sense allowing the program and its facilities to be used as bait.

Can you imagine how awkward and how awful this is going to be for P State at any kind of ceremony to honor Paterno? I mean, how do you use words like integrity or honor at this point?
