Penn State scandal (merged)

They have to put a gag order on Joe. At 84, no tellin what he might slip up and say.

I'm imagining him saying something about how he didn't think too much of it at the time because in his day it was no big deal for guys to do some horsing around with each other in the shower. Just part of football.

Stolen from TD about mcqueary:

He is the true definition of a coward.

quote:

He believed the sounds to be those of sexual activity. As the graduate assistant put the sneakers in his locker, he looked into the shower. He saw a naked boy, Victim 2, whose age he estimated to be ten years old, with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant was shocked but noticed that both Victim 2 and Sandusky saw him. The graduate assistant left immediately, distraught.

1. You witness a kid pinned against a wall being raped.

2. The rapist and kid both see you.

3. The kid is probably thinking someone is here to help him.

4. After looking the kid in the eye while he is being raped, you turn around and leave.

5. I can only assume Sandusky continued to rape the kid knowing the sick piece of **** he is.

This **** is beyond comprehension. I'm really speechless.

Forget protocol. If there's even just one question about Nebraska, the media have completely failed to do their job.

I live in state college, its getting nasty. President has no chance of surviving this. Today at 12:20 is the day of reckoning for JoePa. If he acts like he is not obligated to speak, this entire community will turn on him fully. All of it.

Would you prosecute him LG? Right now, is he legally negligent?

You are mixing apples and oranges there, a bit.

As to criminal liability, every state is different in terms of who has an obligation to report abuse of children to authorities. It is not a very common prosecution and would probably be a function really of whether the guy continued to abuse the same children, or abused others, after the fact. If there was knowledge of a pattern of this and he didn't act to stop it, it is possible.

But there is a political element to it. If he resigns in disgrace, that might satisfy the prosecutors, especially given his age.

Now, as to civil claims, if the guy continued to molest the same kids after there was knowledge in the chain of command and they didn't stop it by reporting him, I'd say that those kids almost certainly have a claim that should be investigated and perhaps brought. That would be against Penn State and its athletic department.

Likewise, if there were new victims abused after the coaching staff and the administration became aware, those victims likely have strong and viable claims for money damages.

Are folks still going to the game?...

How does any PSU fan go to that game saturday? It's not the players' fault, but how do you go to that game?....

That's quite the conundrum. As a Penn St fan (hypothetically), I would be absolutely appalled at what has happened and would want to lash out at the university. At the same time, what have the current players done to deserve that kind of response? Nothing.

Will be interesting to see the reception this weekend.

Are folks still going to the game?...

I think so, Students realize the players do not deserve to be punished, especially on senior day. I think the town may strangely find some healing by coming together to watch some 18-22 yr old boys who had nothing to do with this crap try to pull off an unlikely run to the big 10 championship.

It is unbelievable. Horrific. It would be worth the jail time I would receive to have 5 minutes alone with either Sandusky or the GA.

tell us a little more about the mood around State College... are people as furious as the rest of the country seems to be?... Or are they more about getting more info?... what's the vibe?...

edit... sorry, that was a misquote. I was asking pennvol

I'll look at it from a "personal" view for you. If you honestly think, that old man Paterno condoned this in any way as to sweep it under the rug (for whatever reason), I'm not sure I can convince you of the lack of legal ramifications of his actions.

Sandusy was wrong. He was caught. The incident was reported, beit not through proper channels intially, and now those in the know, beit limited knowledge or speculation, will have to answer for all of this. Paterno included. I'm not arguing that. I just cant grasp why the GA didnt go straight to the proper personel first.

"God-like figure" be damned. I'd skip letting a 90 year old football coach know first and head straight to the top.

IMO, he went to JoePa to "protect the program" if you will. "JoePa will know what to do." And all that JoePa seems to have done is the bare minimum, and then pretended that it never happened. Another interesting tidbit, from my perspective, is why has the former GA, now paid staff member, has remained publicly quiet all of these years. Why is he even on the staff when Sandusky has maintained unfettered access to the program all of these years? If you go back to 2002 when the GA witnessed Sandusky in the act and reported it to JoePa, JoePa "should" have come to one of two conclusions:

1-Sandusky is guilty of wrongdoing (at minimum), and has a known, documented history of similar behavior. A full investigation needs to take place involving the proper authorities.

or

2-The GA is lying and spreading false information about a longtime friend and colleague, and an esteemed member of the institution. He should be reprimanded, if not relieved of his duties.

Somehow, there was never a full investigation and the GA (who was extremely distraught, and had a vivid recollection of the event, as per his testimony) was somehow "pacified" and remains on staff to this day.

"May no act of ours bring shame."

What a joke.

people are just disgusted. They feel like their dad has lived this 2 faced lie. The students are absolutely furious and want the President gone now.

With Joe Pa, people are not satisfied - but wonder is it worse than what we know (ala, did he really know what exactly happened in that shower or was he only given vague unclear details) or was he legitimately in his own mind just following protocol, which is not really sufficient, but following the law.

The jury is out on JoePa, we find out in about an hour how everyone really feels.

What do you mean you find out in an hour how everyone feels? I thought JoePa gave a presser yesterday and refused to talk about it

hmm okay. I think what I read said he was only going to talk about Nebraska and would not answer any questions about the scandel. Unless that already happend.

PSU released a statement that said coach would only answer game questions.

Reporters will not not ask the tough questions, but I don't expect them to get any answers.

No way administration wants JoePa talking about this on an open live mic...

this is sickening. i can't believe nothing was done about this. If paterno knew and did nothing he should be fired. it makes me fill dirty just reading about it.

If I were a reporter and they wouldn't let me ask about this scandal, I wouldn't go to the press conference. If I went and they refused to let Paterno answer the questions, I'd get up and leave. Press needs to make a statement here. Penn State's desire to keep it all about football is why this jackass got to keep raping kids for ten more years.
