Penn State scandal (merged)

I had so much respect for JoePa but theres a special place in hell for people that let evil like this continue

Am I the only person who thinks its strange this article is stashed back near the bottom of the NCAA football section of ESPN? Shouldn't virtual proof that paterno was a liar be a bigger deal than a third rate story even with the trial being over?

I know we all joke that ESPN hates TN, but in a lot of instances, we can clearly see when an industry loves and is trying to protect one corporation or type of person, and it's a shame they aren't trying to get this knowledge to the average sports fan like they do some absolutely ignorant things.

what's amazing is the fact that your talking about very intelligent folks that made these decisons, put it in writing and thought they would get away with it.....

can't wait to see the punishment handed out

There are various forms of intelligence, and the more people I meet in corporate America, the more I realize how terribly stupid a lot of people are. These people only wanted to protect themselves and the university, and its about the most pathetic thing I could imagine.

Sad for Penn State. Worse for the children. Paterno may not have raped any children, but it appears he was well aware and kept it under wraps. His wins since 1996 should be vacated, his statue torn down, and any buildings or programs named after him should be re-named. I don't believe that Penn State should celebrate another victory until Happy(smh)Valley is cleansed.

If he actually did know about the actual molestation and kept it under wraps which probably allowed it to continue to happen isn't that just as bad as physically committing the crime?

Agreed. That's why I got outta corporate crap. It's all the same, throw someone under the bus to save your own ass. I would think Paterno will get thrown under the bus, but he probably deserves it. It almost sounds like, from the article, that Paterno talked them out of turning him in.

Yup.

Kind of hard to throw a dead man under the bus. Paterno was the most powerful man in HV. He controlled his boss (the AD). Penn St.allowed this to happen. No way the NCAA turns a blind eye.

Yup.

OK. Does they will roll on him, rat him out, snitch fit any better? And yes a dead man can be thrown under the bus. These guys will turn on him now that he is dead, imo, to save what they can of their own ass.

The depth of the cover-up, now finally being revealed in indisputable detail, is sickening...

Joe Paterno's name and legacy are now and forever stained. And rightfully so. My only regret is that, in death, he managed to escape being made to stand before the victims, his ever-adoring fans, and a jury of his peers to answer for his despicable actions.

The former President and AD should, and hopefully soon will, trade their pampered lifestyles for a 6 X 12 cell, and years of abuse very similar to what they ignored in the interest of protecting themselves, the university, and a serial child molester.

Jerry Sandusky? Rot in hell. 'Nuff said.

Penn State fans? How can you walk by the statue of Paterno...the place where you held rallies to support him...raising your voices in unison to worship the man you thought was beyond reproach...an innocent man caught up in a web of lies...and not hang your head in shame at the fact that you rallied behind a coach who misled you, lied to you, and betrayed you...not to mention how he turned his back on innocent victims...children...thus earning the permanent title of
"co-conspirator".

Penn State, both in name and reputation, is irrevocably stained. That's a shame. It's a shame that a handful of men...no, they are not men...they are scum...every one of them...took it upon themselves to permanently tarnish the name and reputation of what is, by all other measures, a great institution.

May the victims of this tragedy finally find peace and healing in knowing that those who abused them, and those who ignored the abuse, will finally have to stand accountable for their heinous acts.

And may those who were involved...in any way...including Joe Paterno...suffer the justice that only God himself can invoke.

The NCAA should give them a death penalty unlike the one at SMU.

But, even if they don't, I don't see how this school could recruit well at all on any level. I see no way this school is relevant in any of the big sports for twenty or thirty years. I'm only 21 years old and I can say I will not allow any of my future kids to go to Penn St for any reason.

Actually, all it takes is 2 or 3 people, and throwing a dead man under the bus is really easy.

I think they are rated number 13 in recruiting right now. That may drop off, we'll see.

Penn St is tainted to the point of just saying the name brings a cringe. They need to change the name of the school.

I think this year it will stick decently, but once these e-mails get leaked to the masses (the real ones, not just those of us who follow sports religiously) I think the fact that nobody was clean in this will hamper it quite a bit going forward.

And that's assuming the NCAA doesn't get involved, and I think they will for LoIC

What blows my mind about all of this is pretty much ALL of Penn State's history and tradition are built upon Joe Paterno and what he accomplished while he was at Penn State! Now with all that has been uncovered, it is basically forcing Penn State to take a giganting bottle of "white out" and pretty much erase all of that history and start from scratch! I mean, if you're Penn State, what do you sell recruits on? Tradition? History? Prestige? I mean, you are basically starting COMPLETELY from scratch with your program! It's like you said, vacate the victories, tear down the statues, rename the buildings, etc. They might as well be Georgia State as far as I'm concerned.

Do they take down the statue?

I think they have to

You would think at the very least they have to take it down.

Personally, I would be ok with them taking away every victory from his record 2001 on. One of their bigger bragging rights is his all time win total, so taking that away would be the gigantic "FU" that Joe Pa deserves IMO.

My biggest hope is that the program as a whole is given the death penalty for at least 2 years. I know everyone talks about not punishing the current players, but that University could use a complete overhaul from very top to the entire AD.
