Penn State scandal (merged)

Over under on how long Paterno lasts now without coaching?

1.5 years?

i'm taking the under.

Paterno fulfilled his legal obligations. Moral obligations, on the other hand...

Again, there is the possibility out there he may have been in breach of contract had he gone straight to the police. Now, not sure of that, and even if true, JoePa has the kind of stature that he can piss on a contract and get away with it.

Bottom line is, I'm much, much more upset with the AD than I am with JoePa here.

I agree with this.

Dark day for Happy Valley. All of this is really sad. One man's inappropriate behavior has created a nuclear fallout that stretches across an entire University in what was potentially going to be an exciting and fitting end to a masterful career of a legendary coach.

Its tough on them I'm sure.

Why?

They were all covering up for a friend. McQuery is enemy 1a, everyone else is 1b (excluding Sandusky, obviously). They are all spineless and morally corrupt.

Well I hope Paterno gets to make a short farewell tour. He should be allowed to finish out.

Now, from a practical standpoint, the other bad news is there really isnt much to raid in their 2012 class. We did recruit this DT though.

I know of no contract that would prohibit a person from reporting a crime to the police.

For one thing, that contract would be illegal in itself, especially since it is mandated by State Law to report the crime.

Two, if there was such a clause, Penn State would be subjecting themselves to so much civil liability, that they probably would go bankrupt from all the lawsuits

Paterno's statement released today...

"I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief," Paterno said in a statement released just after initial reports of his pending retirement.

"I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.

"That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

"This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more. My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this university."

You can't be contractually obligated to cover up serious felonies. That contract would be void on its face and against public policy.

Pennsylvania law requires the mandatory reporting of Child Abuse under 23 Pa. C.S.A. §6301). However, this clause may save him

And he did that

I think there is definitely still room to argue that all Involved still have criminal liability.

What I got from Joe Pa's statement is that HE decided to retire and is asking the board to let him stay until the end of the season.

The board needs to end this today and can his a$$ along with the president to save any face. They cannot let him be on the sideline Saturday.

According to everyone, the old bastard ran the university, all the sudden he doesn't? The reason he didn't and the rest was to preserve a legacy, a selfish act that led to so much more that could have been STOPPED if the the GA or the old bastard would have followed up. And the old bastard let him have keys and and access to the campus as late as last week. That's the reson I am pissed. They are all to blame, and I agree with Drunk that the GA is 1A. that poor kid thought he may get some help from the GA in the bathroom. Still can't believe it. This is a huge cover up

What really hurts JoePa is that Sandusky had unfettered access to the facilities for a long period after Paterno learned of and reported the allegation.

right. Legally he is covered. Morally he covered up.

On a somewhat more surreal note: apparently the Westboro Church nutjobs will be picketing the PSU game this weekend.

(my apologies to any of you who might be a WC nutjob, I mean no disrespect. . . . :) )

Sure, but I think that his attorney will point to that and make claims that he fullfilled his obligation and a jury would acquit based on that, even if it gets that far. It may not even make it past the grand jury

And I dont totally agree with that clause. Maybe for a misdemeanor, but not for a serious felony.

How the hell could McQuery stand silent watching this creep using the locker rooms for nearly a decade after what he witnessed? Jesus.
