Penny Hardaway Meltdown

This is lame. I could say every person from East/Middle Tennessee I’ve met that’s moved to the West part of the state act the same way, people are proud of where they come from, so what?

Speaking as someone from (obviously) West Tennessee, it was annoying to be at UT and people that live in their Davidson or Knox county bubbles think we’re dodging bullets on our way to work or pass through Jackson once and whine there’s nothing there.

Unsurprising, this has turned into yet another way for people to complain about a part of the state they’ve never been to.
I wouldn't say the West Tennessee kids were proud of where they came from. That isn't what I meant by chip on their shoulder.

If anything, I would say they were a little coy about where they came from. However when the topic was broached their attitude could be summed up as "Yeah, I'm from Memphis; I know nobody likes it; I don't even really like it either, but f*** you."

I mean, what would you think if people started bashing Chattanooga who have never been there? Chattanooga isn’t all hipsters and hiking, they have a serious crime problem, admittedly not as bad as Memphis, but bad none the less. Maybe we should just give Chattanooga to Georgia and raise the IQ’s of both states.

Obviously, I’m not serious, but apply that same line of thinking to Memphis, and you can see how it gets really old to have your home trashed by people who haven’t lived outside their zip code.

I really wouldn't care because I don't have the inferiority complex. I am not saying you personally have one, but a lot of people I have come into contact with over the years from West Tennessee seem to. Admittedly, that's totally anecdotal.

I think what contributes to it is the fact that Memphis had/has a direct in-state "rival" in Nashville, and the two cities would compare themselves to each other. Nashville has grown and changed by leaps and bounds over the last 20 years to the point where it occupies something of a place in broader culture, there's a ton of money and activity there in excess of what there used to be, but Memphis is still kind of doing its thing. I don't think Memphis wants to be Nashville (at this point, I wouldn't really want to be Nashville either) but to a certain degree Memphis is jealous of the success and spotlight being on them. Chattanooga, in contrast, has never had another city it directly compared itself to like that.

Chattanooga actually mostly is hipsters and hiking (especially the downtown crowd), and does have a crime problem for a city of its size. It is what it is. I love Chattanooga and don't plan to ever leave, but I do feel out of place here sometimes, especially because I live downtown. I am neither a hipster or particularly outdoorsy, and this area is full of people now (many of whom aren't from here) who are all about one or both of those things.

I can’t really say anything more toward your anecdotal evidence since that’s your own life experience.

The whole Memphis/Nashville thing is overblown. I’m in my late 20s, and I don’t know anyone who cares about that. Hell, most of us enjoy (before COVID I guess,) visiting Nashville. The Titans thing was before a time people like me really remember, so again, no one really cares that I know of.

You’re probably right. They should because an employee representing a university cannot unload on the media like that in a press conference. But they don’t have the gonads to fire the town hero. He’ll have to quit and I don’t think his ego will let him. So they are stuck. Gee that’s too bad.
I find it kinda funny and refreshing that he called out the media. Am I in the minority?
Who critiques the hacks writing the crap articles they call journalism? No one!
Make no mistake, I hate Memphis with Alabama level passion and I’m not too fond of penny, but I say good for him and I hope his administration backs him up.
GBO!!

It's not about the media. Most coaches probably feel the same way about the media at one time or another. This is about a coach that lacks the maturity to handle the media.

Penny and Jerry Stackhouse should just play each other every week and tell the press how good they are (in their mind)

Good point but I have come to loathe the media, over the last couple of years, I can’t help it.
Don’t misunderstand though, I have my popcorn ready and am fully prepared to watch the Memphis program burn along with Penny...and will enjoy every second of it.😎
GBO!!

I don't know if the casino route would attract the "crowd" they want. Memphis, and basically every city, wants to attract a crowd that skews younger, educated, and affluent. That crowd does like to go to Vegas to gamble, but I don't think they'd go to Memphis to do it.

I think Memphis is butthurt that they didn't get the Titans. The Titans did play that first season after the relocated in Memphis, and I think tried to use that as a dress rehearsal to show that they could support a team.

Titans' 20 seasons sprang from rocky start in Memphis

That was never going to work. Why would fans show up knowing it’s a rental team? People in Memphis didn’t grow up Oilers fans.

Anecdotal of course, but every person I've ever known from Memphis or West Tennessee has a chip on their shoulder about it. When I was in college, all the West Tennessee kids were that way any time where they were from got brought up. Kind of a "Yeah, I know it isn't cool, but f*** you." Being an East Tennessee person myself (and not even having a dog in the Memphis/Nashville rivalry) I didn't even realize that was a thing until then.

Cool…the western part of the state gets **** on, so that’s probably part of it. I’ve discussed it many times, even with some posters in this thread, so I’m not interested in re-visiting everything. But Shelby County has many Vol fans, and I will never understand why other Vol fans treat it like they do.

I have lived all over the world and visited Memphis numerous times when I had too. Face it, Memphis is a dumpster fire! lol. I am being nice ...

Exactly this.

Saban treats the media with absolute open contempt quite often (minus the F-bombs) and often bullies and ridicules reporters in press conferences. Nothing happens.

Bobby Knight even enjoyed the occasional F-bomb at reporters and made no secret that he thought they were virtually all idiots he tolerated and didn't respect.

Saban can and Knight could, however, do their jobs very well.

Hardaway can't. Lashing out at the media IMMEDIATELY after answering a simple question of "What do you think you can do to prepare better?" with...... "I don't know." I'll guarantee that's not an answer Saban or Knight would give.

It's your job to know, Penny, or have an idea what needs to be done after a loss. You've had 40min to watch shot selection suck, execution be sloppy on offense in every way, defensive assignments missed over and over........ you can say that instead of "I don't know."

Or...... maybe you don't know...... and that's why you're frustrated and why you're in over your head.

Didn't they have the #1 recruiting class last year?

Penny seems like one of those guys that never grew up. He's 50, but he's acts like a petulant 15 year old.

The funny thing is that he's both a better recruiter than Pastner (who was also a great recruiter) and a worse coach. I didn't even think that was possible.

Good points. But there’s also the excuse making and never taking responsibility. He keeps talking about having 17 and 18 year olds out there against older players. Well who exactly recruited over his older players and put these kids on the floor in their place? And then it’s “well if I had my full roster we could do what we want”. They were 6 and 4 with their full roster with losses to Murray State, Georgia and Ole Miss. They still have plenty of talent to not lose to East Carolina, UCF and SMU. Halfway through the season the “kids” are still making the same mistakes over and over. It is coaching failure pure and simple and he just can’t accept that fact.

Every kid on that team would transfer out if Hardaway was fired. Memphis knows that. He’s not getting fired.
Well, if they're satisfied playing crappy ball under a crappy coach, then maybe they need to go too.... 🤷‍♂️

Correct, VISITED! After seeing that city I never had a desire to live there! Taxes, crime, poverty, high cost of living, government corruption, etc. Hope you enjoy! To each their own, I guess … lol

You just described Nashville, Knoxville or any moderately large city, I guess you live in paradise on 20 acres by yourself with no problems, each to their own “lol”
