Penny Hardaway Meltdown

I think if the State or if Memphis had allowed casinos to be built Memphis could’ve exploded. That’s just my opinion, and I’m not that well versed on Tennessee State politics to know if that were actually a possibility . Just seems like a damn shame that you have Tunica 45 minutes away and all that $ stays out of town.

You are right.

The casinos wanted to be in Memphis. Legislators wouldn't hear it. Instead they (the casinos) chose the nearest allowable location to Memphis which was Tunica, MS. The first casino there was "Splash". It was on a boat and they charged 20 bucks just to go in and gamble.

At the time, Tunica was located in poorest county in the United States. They were wise enough to earmark a certain amount of gambling earnings to go toward education. I heard later it had become the most well-funded educational system in the US. My kids had a swim meet there about 5 years ago. I doubt Stanford has a better facility.

That’s hilarious . I can’t imagine going into a casino already $20 in the hole. I’ve been to Tunica and had a blast. It was definitely a good time . I wonder how many States located on the Mississippi don’t have gambling? If Tennessee is the only one that’s pathetic.

Memphis has crime and corruption and other issues at a level not seen outside of Chicago or NYC or LA. They are consistently ranked as one of the worst cities in the entire country for several reasons

Much of that is headline hype. My wife and I lived in Memphis for 8 years and recently moved to the Nashville suburbs. Memphis has its problems, but we enjoyed our time there for the most part. Most of the crime is gang activity and doesn't typically involve casual folks. It's also really affordable for a city its size.

And that area is about to get a huge economic facelift in the coming years when Ford opens its Blue Oval City facility.

I kind of get it - of course with athletics they have an inferiority complex with UT but for the last 15-20 years I've gathered that city has an inferiority complex generally, particularly with Nashville.

I've always liked Nash more than Memphis personally, but 20 years ago there wasn't all that much to set the cities apart. 20 years later, Nashville is not only the bigger city but has absolutely exploded...businesses and people relocating there, tons of tourism, and is a trendy destination city on a national stage. Memphis is still kind of, well, Memphis. I think on some level they look at the emergence of Nashville and think that should have happened to them.

The "rivalry" between the two cities is funny, and you almost have to be from TN to get it.

It's like, if they were brothers, Nashville would be the smarter, better looking one, but Memphis would have the better sense of humor, and could probably beat the s*** out of Nashville in a fist fight. That's the best description I can think of.
