Pentagon Considering Ground Troops in Syria

until that understanding is worked out we should stay the frick out. Russia and Syria dont want us there.

Syria probably wouldn't have a problem with us being there if our ultimate goal wasn't the removal of Bashar.

Look, I have no problem with this nation kicking someone's ass who deserves it. Especially if they attack us.

And when was the last time we did that? Maybe after Pearl Harbor?

None of the other military excursions after that were provoked by an attack nor did we kick the ass of the one that did allegedly attack us. That's 80 years of military history to sink your teeth into.

I do draw the line at long drawn out occupations in semi-hostile nations in the aftermath. Or using our own treasury to rebuild said nation. Providing assistance is one thing. Spending our own taxpayer money on third world ****holes where we will never recoup that money is another.

We go in, kick their ass and leave them to pick up the pieces.

What national interest do we have in Syria? Or anywhere in the MENA for that matter?

We haven't tried to kick anyone's ass since WWII.

And yet, here we are.

This is the point where we have to put pride to the side and start negotiations with the Russians to achieve a common end goal. Give up this idea of overthrowing Bashar until we handle business with ISIS and even then, let the people decide under UN guidance.

There is no reason we should be working against the Russians in this matter. Only bad things will happen.

We shouldn't be there from the get go. Forget negotiating with the Russians. They were invited, we were not. We should just pull out. Forget about this nonsense about "cutting and running" or showing weakness. Just leave.

And the crazy thing is they are they ones fighting ISIS there. The US needs to focus on the ISIS supply lines coming from Turkey.

Russia was dealing with that, as well. The first few weeks the Russians were in Syria, they began bombing the supply lines going into Turkey. We had been there 2 years prior and all we did was bomb sand dunes.

You think? That is the entire reason why we are really there... to over throw Assad. Just like we turned over the tables in Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan and Ukraine.

Oh Ras, will you ever stop using partial quotes from my posts?

agreed. which is why the understanding should be worked out first.

I honestly think this is something Trump could sell to Congress and the American people, his alleged Russian ties as well as warhawks like McCain notwithstanding. If he could coordinate with the Russians to take ISIS out of the picture as well as negotiating a peaceful transition/elections with Assad, that could be a huge FP win for him. Forget Israel for the moment and go after the hottest zone over there.

There is no reason with the change in leadership in Washington that couldn't work. He wants to do "good deals" that favor the US, that would be a huge one.

20 killed among them US military personnel and PKK Kurdish rebals in massive ISIS suicide bombing east of Raqqa. 3 US soldiers were Medevaced out.

Why are we there again?
I understand this is the Politics forum, but until we know some more details (or even confirmation from the Pentagon) lets focus on supporting the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines and their families who are no doubt going through very tough times. I think we can afford to leave the politics out of it for a bit, no?

Well, considering tgat politics is the reason those troops were there in the first place, I believe it's a relevant point to bring up.

WTF???

Keeping them out of countries halfway around the world is supporting the troops.

sad that you are calling the people of Syria terrorists. Assad started the mess and only started using the word terrorism when he was losing and no one would come help him.
