Peyton Manning to miss entire season

Damn, I'm glad the Titans have the support they do in middle Tennessee and western Kentucky or they'd be headed to LA.

They're called the TENNESSEE Titans for a reason people.

...and yes the one SEC championship was nice, as well as the continued domination over Georgia and the start of our decade long stomping of Alabama. We did get smashed by Florida multiple times, as well as embarrased in the 1998 Orange Bowl.

But 1998 was 1998 - Peyton didn't "set" that team up for jack ****. The coaches did.

Mark my words, if they build that LA stadium, Bud will want MAJOR upgrades or a whole new stadium. If he dosn't get them they will be the LA Titans..

When the Vols have the CBS slot against our big rivals, they are the only game on in the area then as well. I don't think that's it. It could be because the NFL as a whole is more popular than the college game as a whole though.

ESPN 1-8, espnU, Versus, Big10 etc are all showing games at the same time. How many NFL games are shown at a time?

The Titans are the big enchilada in Middle Tennessee, and are more popular than the Vols in West TN (I've lived there). East TN is all orange but its also the least populated of the three grand divisions. There are definitely more Titan fans out of state than Vol fans. Southern Kentucky roots for the Titans as their NFL team. They hate the Vols. Northern Alabama has a ton of Titans fans. They're all about the Tide in college. etc, etc.

I have yet to meet a passionate Titans fan, and I've been to many games. The Titans have a small radius of fans, while the Vols have generations of tradition, and fans all over the country.
It's comical to read an argument about which team is "bigger."
Also, aren't the Titans one of the least successful franchises in the league? Pretty sure I saw they were ranked 25th out of 32 in Forbes.

A small radius of fans? Nashville is tiny compared to Knoxville.

UT games don't count! :)

NFL ticket is not "pay-per-view".

All day NFL games are regional broadcasts. And they still easily get better ratings than national CBS SEC college broadcasts.

I just remembered that this is supposed to be a Peyton Manning thread.

Here I go...

That sucks about Peyton!

I prefer college ball over the NFL, and the Vols are my team over the Titans. With that said, the Titans are my favorite NFL team and have a ton of support. Their games pull higher ratings than the Vols on a consistant basis. I do think it's a fair statement to say the Titans are more popular in TN than the Vols.

Maybe it's a coincindence, but the Neyland capacity issues bagan when the Titans arrived in Nashville.

FWIW, the Titans played at Vandy their first year in Nashville and got virtually no support there either. Their support started when they had their own stadium in Nashville. I was at the first game in the stadium which was against the Bengals. I remember being more excited about seeing the Pride of the Southland at half time as a celebration of the 98 National title than watching the Titans. By the end of the game, I was hooked on the Titans though. They were no longer the Houston Oilers at that point.

Not hard to do when they are the only game on TV.. Come on if the Vols were the only game allowed to be on TV the ratings would smash those of the Titans.

no way that's true either. You included 2 smaller states (and not even the whole thing). Travel around and you'll find UT fans everywhere

College football ratings are diluted by the number of games. Yeah, the Titans might have better ratings but that's because they're competing with about 5 (sometimes 0) other games. And just because the ratings are high what makes you think people tuned in to see the Titans? If you polled Tennessee residents the Vols would win and wouldn't be close.

There are Titans fans everywhere in small pockets as well.

I'm talking about being THE team in that region. Southern Kentucky is primarily a UK place for NCAA rooting interests. The Titans are THEIR NFL team.

WHAT PART OF NFL GAMES ARE REGIONAL DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND.

Titans games are typically shown to a relatively small region of the country. all 15 NFL games are split over two networks in two timeslots who split up games into regions.

Vols games on ESPN networks are shown nationally. A vast many more people are able to watch Vols games on ESPN than Titans games. Titans still get better ratings.

What are the ratings of Thursday night college games compared to regional NFL games?

Betting NFL still wins, even though NCAA has no competition.
