He is the greatest QB in UT history, and could be the greatest NFL QB ever when it is all said & done. I just wanted to get some opinions from Volnation about Peyton & the big games. Skip Bayless calles him the best regular season QB ever. Why do you guys think he has only won 1 ring, and never got the NC in college? I was a young kid during those days & watched UT football, but wasnt really into it like I am now mainly because of age. Sadly most of the years that I have been going to Neyland Stadium it hasnt been pretty. I have never seen us beat UGA, UF, or Bama in person. Better days are coming though, and I will be there until they do! Anyways back to the subject..Was it more about the team we had instead of him coming up short? The year after he left we won the NC. That just seems crazy to me. I have watched him dominate in the NFL. He makes it look so easy. Its really amazing. When I watch him play I just cant believe that he hasnt won about 5 rings yet. Also my brother that is on volnation and is a Vols fan says he would take Eli right now over Peyton. I have done everything I can to prove my point, but cant get it across. I applaud Eli for everything he has done, but for one game I am taking Peyton all day! Just look at the stats. Anyone else agree with me?

You didn't mention Gruden, Strong, or Fulmer. First football thread I've seen without those names. Prepare to be flamed

Peyton was great. Except against florida. Played tight and turned the ball over too much. I was spoiled. I was at ut from 94-97....we just showed up knowing we were going to win 10 every year...this decade not so nice to you youngsters.....

Football is a team sport, yes, 1 player can make a difference but overall it's a collective effort. If Peyton had the Giants D while he was in Indy, he probably would of won 5 SB

I've got a pretty good idea why Peyton never won a NC in college. :)

As for Eli being better than Peyton...yeah, no.

Im a ut alum and giants fan, so tough spot. I think peyton is better qb but eli keeps his calm better which gives him 2 rings. I love peytons work ethic and intelligence but eli has won more big games so i go w him.

Ole miss sucks (if its any consolation)

Lol. Maybe I will get a few honest replies.

I disagree. Peytons d w freeney and those guys was pretty top notch for a few years

Peyton did have a good d but most of the time they were all injured. I think Eli has always had the overall better team. Peyton is just so good in the regular season that the records dont reflect that.

I have personally seen heath shuler, casey clausen, peyton manning, and tee martin. In my opinion shuler was the best college qb you could ask for, he was fearless, and he was a winner. tee martin was a great college qb national title, nuff said. peyton manning as a qb was good enough to beat florida but the rest of the team was not. florida beat us with some of the most agressive defense that i have seen live. the gators always had the studs on defense, and they smoked us every year in the punt and kickoff return game. not even peyton was able to raise his play enough to cover the added pressure that florida brought to every game with us. florida just had a higher percentage of elite players that we had during peytons years. if i was putting together a college team (not nfl) i would be hard pressed not to have shuler 1st , martin 2nd , and then peyton. clausen, ainge not on the same level.

People need to realize just how difficult it is to win a Super Bowl. The fact he even has a ring is a great accomplishment and one that plenty of great QBs never acheive....Dan Marino anybody?

If Jim Caldwell had not been the coach for the 2nd Super Bowl and Tony Dungy was still there, he would have had 2. Caldwell was a lousy HC in college and had no business being the Colts HC. Peyton might still get another. Anything can happen in the playoffs.

Marino was my favorite until Peyton came. He was so fun to watch and is proof you must have a TEAM to surround you to win the big on. Great coaching also helps, but don't tell the Gruden bashers that.

Too inconsistent, and the defenses were always undersized. They were always ranked toward the bottom on Run D, MJD would always have career games against them when Jaguars werent complete trash

JMO, in College Peyton was much more ready for the pro game than the college game. I'm not sure how to say this, but I always had the suspicion that some of the players resented Peyton and laid down at key times. Specifically at UT his offensive line. I think that Peyton tried to coach them at UT and they resented it. We lost too many games to Florida that we should not have.

Then there is the NFL setup v's college. The NFL has a playoff, college obviously does not. I know in the last 2 years Bammer has lost 1 and still played for the National Championship. During Peyton's career that could not happen. 1 loss and the team was sunk for the year. It's very tough to go undefeated particularly in the SEC. During that time period the East was much stronger than the West in the SEC. Florida and Tn were the top dogs. In the West Bama and Auburn were on probation and LSU sucked then.

I'll give you 5 reasons why Manning never won a NC.

'95 Florida (played in bowl vs NC Nebraska)
'96 Florida (NC)/Memphis
'97 Nebraska/Michigan (Co NC)

When a game is down to one possession, I'll take Peyton over anyone. There is a reason he has more game winning drives than anyone else.

Peyton only played them 3 times, not 4 like his detractors like to claim.

He can't help other peoples turnovers/fumbles etc.

Peyton usually played good enough to win, he just didn't have a defense that could stop Florida and during that time Florida did get some very fluke turnovers that helped them.

One was a batted pass that didn't land on the ground, it landed in the belly of a Florida Dlineman who had just been pancake blocked. No kiddin. Just fell out of the sky into the arms of a guy that had gotten his butt kicked. Jay started the flood one year just dropping the ball for no reason after he had a first down. No hit on the ball, just dropped it after he was 5 yards past the LOS and making a cut, it bounced up to a defender streaking the other way for a TD. Things like that happened almost every UF game. Turnovers not from great plays/good hits etc but just plain old dumb luck. They had some from good plays too but man did they ever have some strange good luck bounces.

I think Peyton had one game that wasn't as good, but I am pretty sure his stats in 2 of them were more than good enough to win. His defense was just giving up 60 points a game LOL.

I always laugh when I hear "Peyton only has one ring", some of the best QB's ever don't have a ring.(Dan Marino off the top of my head) One ring is pretty good. Eli has 2 but c'mon that pass rush has been the reason for NY's success.

When talking about Manning you're referring to '95-'97. He didn't become starter in '94 until the WSU game (I believe). Still played well as a Freshman.

Back to '95-'97, UT lost to 3 teams (UF, Memphis, & Nebraska). Had UT not lost to Memphis in '96 does UF get a re-match with FSU? Or does UT play FSU in the Fiesta Bowl? In '97, UT could have theoretically won the NC had WSU beaten Michigan in the Rose Bowl and UT beat Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

So the chances were there to bring home some additional hardware, but it didn't happen.

To twigsxx2, no way you put Martin ahead of UT based on talent. Yes, he won a NC, but Manning was the better qb.
