Phillip Fulmer Plaza on the south end of Neyland Stadium

I agree with you. I'm simply pointing out that the school would be in an awkward spot if they honored Fulmer because he won an NC while ignoring a coach who, according to them, did the same.

Fulmer's was consenses and he played here. That is enough criteria for me to say Dickey doesn't need a statue but honored some other way

Neyland had a consenses National Championship as well. The statues would be for coaches who have won consenses National Championships

Regardless of how one feels about Fulmer, I don't know if it would make sense to permanently honor a coach after he was fired. Has any other program ever done that?

I count that National Champioship but in reality it is a stretch as only one or two selectors voted us Nat Champs that year. Much like some of Alabama's Nat Champs that they count. So, no I wouldn't put a statue of Dickey up for that but maybe honor him some other way.

Yeah, but most NTs aren't really "pure" anyway. As long as we have no playoff, NTs will always have questions. For example, what if Bama had lost after Oregon? Then the Ducks would have been the ones to beeochslap Notre Dame. We will never know who was truly the better team because OU and UA did not play each other.

As for the statues, only Neyland should have one. Last undefeated, untied, and unscored on team. Ain't nobody better.

Why not just build a vast hall of honor replete with Volunteer memorabilia, photographs, artwork, and such and call it Volhalla, ala the vast hall from Norse mythology called Valhalla honoring the viking knights of legend? For Vol fans everywhere, Robert Neyland is analogous to Odin anyway.

That's what my upstairs UT room is called; "Volholla".

After reading the complaining and backstabbing on here, maybe it should be called Peyton Place?

What if Ohio State wasn't on probation? Bama is in the Sugar Bowl against Louisville.

I mean that way even a casual fan or someone who knew nothing about Tennessee football could get a pretty good history just by visiting one place (Neyland Stadium) Right now Fulmer is not anywhere to be found except on the street sign. When you are inside the stadium you see the six national championship banners, retired jerseys, etc. On the outside you see The Neyland statue and the black and white pictures of former players. Still no Fulmer. I think it would honor a great coach and give a more complete history of our program in just one place.

And........ That's how it should be! Fulmer did not bring the Football program to elitest level like Neyland did! That's why he'll never be in the same classification as Neyland..

Hey! We could install jail cells, let inmates run them, have all kinds of drugs available, look the other way and let the Good Ole Boys Mafia Club oversee all the corruption....just like when ole Fill was here.

Sorry, I hold the copyrights on that name.:)

Our entire state is named after the idea of honoring those who Volunteered to serve and protect this country.

A few 100 Tennesseans whipped the Brits at Kings Mountain during the Revolutionary War.

Andy Jackson and a group of "Vols" from Tennessee are why you don't need a passport to go to New Orleans.

"Vols" are why you don't need a passport to go to San Antonio.

32,000 men from East Tennessee fought for the Union in the Civil War, which is why your money has the faces on it that it has.

This doesn't even get to the disproportionate representation by our state in all the wars since.

It is a proud, proud legacy and ultimately what be a Volunteer is all about honoring. There is no better symbol of this than the fact that some of General Neyland's players actually gave "their last full measure of devotion" in WWII.

I think a memorial to these players should have been made long ago, and obviously our fan base could use a little "edgicatin'".

Kindly get a clue, sir!

Slight exaggeration but carry on.

One of my all-time favorite posts on VN. Well-done, Rifleman! :hi:

AMEN! I was just thinking about this the other day. I thought it would be sweet if there was something like the Korean War Memorial in D.C. on campus. Would be nice to see something like that but the men could be dressed like the Volunteers---furs ,muskets ,and such.GBO

This is a brilliant idea, imo. There's a real need for folks to understand what it means to be a Vol!
