Pig Howard update per CBJ:

If Pig is on the team this fall, I have no doubt he will have a productive year. I'm not saying he'll be as productive as North, Malone, Pearson, or Croom, but he'll have an impact on Saturdays.

I see so many people on here saying players have been recruited over before their so called "replacements" ever play a down of cfb. Do I think Von is more talented and will steal a large portion of Pig's play time? Yes. However, to say that Pig has been recruited over is both ridiculous and stupid at this point. He has proven to be a playmaker at times and will do so again this year given he's on the team.

Was with you til that last sentence.

He's not as big, fast or as talented as Pearson. He's still working to get back on the team after some very poor decisions that showed disrespect for and lack of commitment to the team. He's proven to be a tough, fairly sure handed possession receiver with little to no big play ability. I'll definitely be pulling for him when he goes in to give Pearson and/or Johnson a breather.

Von is 6'3" he can play outside too.

The 2 starting outside WRs will be North and Pearson.

Pig will start in the slot.

Pig has the elusiveness none of our other WRs do. Thats kinda how he got his nickname.

Pig gave everything he had on the field. And it cost him. Sounds to me like the staff knew exactly how to help him get back, and apparently he's done it. Including earning his spot from his teammates.

?

He's the best slot receiver we have and its not even close. Name these better players you are assuming will start over him?

Von Pearson will start at slot and Pig will have to beat out Jonathan Johnson to be his backup IMHO.

Agree. He has been over recruited multiple times.

lol no.

He's been recruited over for when he leaves Tennessee but until then he's a proven receiver that has ability to make plays in space. Pearson made a couple of good grabs this offseason but he hasn't played a down of CF yet. Oh and his spring game was mediocre at best.

Pearson's spring game performance was very similar to Ferguson's

I disagree. You don't recruit over playmakers. You just add more. Pig is a proven playmaker at this level, unlike any of the other slot receivers on the roster.

That was true until Pearson stepped on campus and Pig didn't participate in Spring practice. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd bet the slot WR depth chart going into the opener vs USU will be:

1- Pearson
2- Johnson
3- Howard

Thanx to Pig, for getting back on board and working hard to do so. We need all the help we can get. I believe he will be in the mix this season, but also believe he won't be relied upon as much. He's a play maker... now facing competition, talented competition.

I think pig will start, he's got actual sec game experience and knows the playbook.jmo though

What part was true, that you don't recruit over playmakers (you just add more), or that Pig is the only slot receiver on the roster that is a proven playmaker at this level?

I agree with this part if you meant just the opener or the first two games and not the entire season. You can't just let someone who spent the off-season in the doghouse start ahead of guys who worked hard with the team during that time. That does happen when there's a significant talent drop-off, but I don't think that's the case here. I think Howard will be playing more than 50% of the slot receiver snaps by the Oklahoma game, though. Even if that turns out to be wrong, I certainly don't expect Pig to be relegated to third string for the season and barely see the field, which is what I'm thinking of when I say someone has been recruited over.

If Pig gets out of the coaches dog house, works his butt off, stays in great shape, and has a great attitude, he will be the starter based upon his proven ability from last season.

However IMHO I would rather have a proven faster Pig. Von's speed was noticeably deficient in the spring game. Yes he does have ball skills but how good are ball skills when you can't run.

Ball skills would have gotten us to a bowl game last season (UGa-Pig)......
Von is slow? Can't run? really? How so?

Which is the whole issue, imo. The kid would have been a HERO if he had held onto that ball. He pushed farther than he should have, and paid for it. Just what it seems to me. I'm not right very often when it comes to football though. :p

Then why didnt johnson play over pig last year?

Like the CBJ post game presser, I believe we would have not even been in a position to get that close to winning....had it not been for Pig's plays throughout the game. He is a play maker and we need all the play makers we can get. I bet he improves across the board this season, especially ball control. I just don't get the whole "Von is slow statement".
...and trust me...I'm wrong most of the time when it comes to football but I'm still opinionated. VG, you are right more than a lot of us and respect your posts( although I have been a jerk to you on more than one occasion)
