Pig Howard update per CBJ:

Then why didnt johnson play over pig last year?

Perhaps because Pig was better last year?

However, Pig missed all of Spring/offseason and, according to Coach Z during his radio interview with Ainge last week, Johnson might've had the best Spring of any of his WRs and is "his kinda guy". Johnson showed some flashes last year and if he's really improved, has been dedicated to the team 100% and is performing better in his 2nd year in Butch's offense, it's not unreasonable to believe that he is currently well ahead of Pig.

And please don't misunderstand, I'm not in any way anti-Pig. He's a tough, hard-nosed possession-type slot receiver. He was our most reliable receiver.....last year.

I believe if he can truly re-dedicate himself that he can be a solid contributor and I'll pull as hard for him as I will any other player on the team. He's a very likable kid and very solid SEC receiver. I'm just sharing my opinion on the circumstances around Pig's "suspension" and where I think he ranks in the pecking order talent-wise. He's not a game-breaker, not as talented as Von and with him not being around this last offseason and Spring that he's opened the door for not only a much more physically gifted Pearson, but for perhaps a very good J Johnson who has appeared to walk through it quite well according to Coach Z.

Like the CBJ post game presser, I believe we would have not even been in a position to get that close to winning....had it not been for Pig's plays throughout the game. He is a play maker and we need all the play makers we can get. I bet he improves across the board this season, especially ball control. I just don't get the whole "Von is slow statement".
...and trust me...I'm wrong most of the time when it comes to football but I'm still opinionated. VG, you are right more than a lot of us and respect your posts( although I have been a jerk to you on more than one occasion)

100% agree regarding Pig in the Georgia as he was outstanding that day and was key to our ability to move the ball. I don't blame him AT ALL for the last play, kid was busting his tail to score for his team and I admired his effort.

And you're absolutely right Grow...the statement that Pearson is slow is utterly absurd.....

I like Pig a lot and hope he does well since he seems to have been given a 2nd chance by the coaches and players. If not for 1 bone headed play on his part last year (not the one people might think) we might have gone bowling. I hope he has grown from all this.

A well-supported opinion, but I'll have to stick to my statement. I think Pig has carved himself a role for his tenure. Pearson does seem to be more talented, but he'll have to prove it on the field at this level. Pig is already a proven commodity. I can see him being the go-to guy on third down like Gerald Jones.

Ball skills would have gotten us to a bowl game last season (UGa-Pig)......
Von is slow? Can't run? really? How so?

Like I said ''IMHO'' from watching the spring game, he looked rather slow. Are you bothered by my opinion? I could care less about yours. Run Von on that same play that Pig had in the GA game, and it's a 2yd loss. Just like on the reverse in the Spring game. Dobbs and Worley would have picked up more yards on the reverse than Von.

Yeah, he robbed Dobbs of a TD. That's the whole point KB. The kid was playing like his life depended on it. He did that all season.

The truth of the matter is, sometimes kids have a gift of athletic ability and no idea how to maintain control of it. That's why you see kids that are RIDICULOUS in practice, but can't translate it to game day.

Pig has the benefit of a coaching staff that understands what a college athlete needs to succeed. And it would appear that he has recognized that fact and is running with it. His team is behind him. They have confidence in him, even with his "mistakes" this past season. And it will pay off.

I think hes more talented than ur giving him credit for.....u dont just forget how to play football....as long as hes in shape he will be good to go and will start in the slot.

No, I wasn't bothered by your opinion...just confused. Thank you for clarifying. Hopefully, you and I will see exactly how slow VP is this season.... many times(3 yds in the end zone).:)

...trying to remember..block in the back penalty?

Yes. Dobbs was well beyond the DE/OLB and was on his way to the corner of the end zone for the game-winning td. Play was called back on Pig's inconsequential holding/block in the back penalty.

I for one will be very happy if he is our best player, and in fact is fast. He just didnt look it in the spring game. When it comes to speed, I look at track FAT times and found none of that on Von. And upon finding no times, he just looked slow. Ultimately I want us to win.

Hey Volly, I'm behind Pig and am hoping that he capitalizes on his second chance. I was a big fan last year and loved how hard he played. He was outstanding in the Georgia game and he was a pretty reliable possession receiver throughout the season. I just think that Pearson is a superior athlete with game-breaking ability (abilities that Pig just doesn't have) and will supplant Pig as the starting slot receiver. I don't intend it as a slight to Pig. It just appears to be a pretty obvious fact to me.....in the same way that I believe Josh Malone brings more talent than the other WRs that played opposite North last year. Just the way it is IMO and it's nothing but positive for the program.

IMHO, Pig gonna break loose from the pen this year. He's a competitor. I think the past few months have humbled the young man and elevated his outlook on where he stands with the team. He most certainly will be pushed to maintain his position, which is a good thing.

Now Malone has speed. And it was quite evident in the spring game. He also has the FAT times to verify.

However IMHO I would rather have a proven faster Pig. Von's speed was noticeably deficient in the spring game. Yes he does have ball skills but how good are ball skills when you can't run.

Von has noticeably deficient speed?

The speedy receiver runs a 4.48 40-yard dash, according to 247Sports, and possesses elite athleticism. His production at the JUCO level is hard to ignore.

He's not the fastest player on the roster, but he has plenty of speed to be a playmaker at UT.

You idiot, you're saying he is slow. So, do you beleive that he is slow? Or you just Bamawriter bored and saying stupid stuff.

So your the one who is bothered by my opinion. Name calling, Interesting Perspective. Like I said I don't trust a 40 time posted on a 24/7 or rivals or any recruiting website. I do trust USATF times and found none on Von. I simply watched the game, just like you did, and from my observation he looked slow. Does not mean I hate Von, I wish him well during the season. And I hope my son never dates your daughter.

Your the first and only person that I have ever heard describing him has having deficient speed. Your opinion is definitely in the minority. But, your are entitled to it, no matter how inaccurate.

It's good to finally have a debate like this. We have two very talented players. Both will see the field, both will have the ball in there hands. This season is gon be a guden.
