A reporter asked Kaul if that meant Blake said he had the weapon after the tasing attempt, but the AG would not answer.

“As the release stated, he acknowledged he had a knife in his possession at some point,” Kaul said.

All the offices involved Sunday have been placed on administrative leave.

Officials also noted Wednesday that the Kenosha Police Department does not have body cameras.

It's what can be proven by the prosecutor. I see a couple of areas they are gonna have problems with. Including an untainted jury pool. If this even goes to court.

I do not get why the knife is a big deal. He is resisting arrest and reaching back into his car. Cops have no idea what he is reaching for. Poor police work in hindsight but hard to fault them for shooting once it got to that point.

All boils down to same situation - IMO, you resist arrest and you really have no one to blame but yourself for whatever consequences occur though police should try their best to deescalate the situation. Good/smart cops probably would have in this situation but, as in all types of jobs, some cops are better than others. Still does not mean these instances are the result of racism.

Wrong. They said that's where it was recovered. They merely said he was in possession of one and Blake admitted to it. There is more detail required on that subject though.

Admitting he had one could very well be he had one in the car. You are correct we need more details.

Resisting arrest should not be a death sentence. If it has come to that, we have no civil liberties.

Its not just resisting arrest though. Resisting arrest demonstrates that you are in a state of mind that will lead to bad things. He wasnt shot once he resisted arrest, he was shot once he demonstrated likelihood of being a danger to himself, the officer or other civilians by reaching into his car whether it was drive off or get a weapon

With one of the warrants being for sexual assault of a minor. Yeah he really should’ve been able to get in the car with those kids and drive off.

There was so much wrong with the situation.

Who did he admit this to? “I had a knife in my possession” doesn’t sound like conversational English. That seems like a term of art that has been added by the listener. The AG’s reluctance to move off that specific terminology makes me wonder about what definition he’s using for that word or if he even knows what was said.

I’m trying to figure out how having the knife on him the whole time makes this look better for the police.

Where did I imply it was a death sentence? However, he not only was resisting arrest, he was reaching into his car which any cop at that point would have to assume he was reaching for a weapon (which very well could have been a gun). Again, he should not have died if there was better police work up to that point but the bottom line is he put himself into an extremely dangerous situation and is now facing the consequences.

The Atlanta shooting is tougher to defend from the cop's perspective as the guy was running away (though he was shooting a taser at the cops while running).

It absolutely should not. But resisting arrest while wielding a deadly weapon while not complying with an officers orders, and fighting through non-lethal force does put you in the danger zone for lethal force to be applied.

I have thought about this several times. Why not take him to the ground? They already tried that and he escaped. Why not use less than lethal force (taser)? They already tried and he fought through that. If he did indeed have a knife in his hand I am not going to tackle him as he is walking away towards the car. In that situation I, like most reasonable people, would think that he more than likely is going to stab me. At that point a tackle/submission hold is more than likely out of the question.

At this point what do you do to subdue the suspect?

Do you let him reach into the car and pull out whatever it is he is reaching in for? What if it is a gun?

This is not a race or bad policing situation this is an individual situation. This I believe is the question that we miss every time. What are we doing culturally to make individuals like this believe that they can get to this point with law enforcement? That is a tough question that I believe we are currently unwilling to ask of the black community.
