Pooch's Punts on 3rd Down...

The Charlotte loss was inexcusable just as the Austin Peay loss was this year. However, the Peay loss was at home. Blame Pearl for both or one, but Martin was on the sideline for the Peay loss and he had much more talent and the team flat out sh*t the bed. Last year was bad from the get go after the NCAA came knocking. I'd say that had to do with some of the results last year.

Pearl was at UT 6 seasons and only had what most rational people would consider a few bad losses. Every program has them, but he didn't have many. We'll see how many Cuonzo has after 6 years if he survives that long. If I were betting, I'd say he's going to have a few more in just his first few years than Pearl had in his entire tenure.

I really don't care about the Pearl nonsense anymore. He was great for UT bball for a while and some of my fondest memories of UT ball happened on his watch.

He did admit it......

I understand now that he made an ATTEMPT, but in doing so, incorrectly credited the former regime with a loss to UNCA. He apparently meant UNC-Charlotte.

This was settled some 12 hours ago or so. Carry on.

I'm not sure what shoes Santa puts under the scrub pines in Florida, but hopefully he's all Adidas, all day....

From what I've gathered from VN, Florida made a late push based on Florida Assistant Coach Pelphrey's relationship with Stokes while he was still employed as the coach at Arkansas. This is a worrisome turn of events, imo. Stokes could step right in to a situation where he has a scholarship, just like he would at UT, and also be an immediate part of an almost definite NCAA Tourney team; Probably one that could go deep in the Tourney and would be able to buoy his stock in the 2013 NBA draft while playing 1 1/2 seasons for a coach who already has 2 NCAA Championships.

I'm on of the more positive UT Basketball fans, but I'm not confident he will sign with UT today, based on this development. I still think we have a good shot, based on his ability to immediately step in to our lineup and contribute, but Florida's sales pitch is almost a no brainer. Gotta give credit to Pelphrey and Donovan for getting in the middle of his recruitment this late in the process.

We'll see later today.....

Go Vols!!!

1. I had already typed another game summary. Kenny Hall pretty much singlehandedly changed the outcome with his aggressive play late in the second half. Why he can't do that for at least 20 minutes a game is a mystery.

2. Golden played subpar offense and slow defense, again. His play is the biggest liability the team has right now.

3. McRae and Golden somehow got some good bounces on those late free tosses. That's the second game in a row that Golden has extended the lead late in a comeback game with his free throw shooting. At least we can count on him there.

4. Quick teams are going to continue to bedevil us all season long. We are just slow.

5. Hubbard and Sollazzo killed us with that quickness, but were held in check, late. It seemed like we could have done that all game with more defensive aggressiveness....

6. Skylar shot really well from 3 and is becoming a consistent threat from outside. Which is exactly what he should be doing. He has progressed from last year to this year but, when Skylar McBee, Kenny Hall and Cam Tatum are your biggest scoring threats, your team will be lucky to win against many quality teams.

7. McRae cannot be counted on to provide any consistency at this point, which we desperately need from the shooting guard position with Golden's scoring being almost nonexistent and Tatum playing the wing.

8. Maymon shot well when he had the ball but, once again, he is not getting enough opportunities. That goes right back to the subpar point guard play. Washpun is not the answer, either. We are stuck with Golden and an underutilized Maymon, right now

9. Woolridge, Tatum and Hall combined for 46 of 72 against Asheville. I predicted about 11 between the trio for the ETSU game. They had 30, I believe. Good on 'em!

pass the ball to maymon, for the love of god. Where are those guys from the football forum that are always going out on lunch dates with people from the AD. Get them to put the bug in Martin's ear about running a little offense through the guy...jeez

1. Auburn is awful. Glad we beat them soundly.
2. This game was the game that will be mentioned as when we turned the corner. I think we go 7-3 or 8-2 the rest of the way.
3. We finished much better today, something that has been a constant worry in almost every game of late. We barely pulled off the CT. win even after being up by 10 late in the game.
4. Defense and rebounding are going to be what gets us into the postseason.
5. Pooch Punts took a nap for several games. I'm sure you're all thrilled it's back.
6. Tatum was 0-9. He will see less minutes going forward but will probably come back strong in limited minutes against Kentucky.
7. McRae had a solid game, but I don't see that carrying over to the next game at Kentucky. Pretty sure he was one of the players Cuonzo was referencing who didn't have the ability to help get us a win on the road. Hobock or Souce could have scored against Auburn. Itch could have dunked on them.
8. Call me crazy and you'd be right, but I still think we have an outside shot at the NCAA Tourney with 7 or 8 more regular season wins and 2 wins in the SEC Tourney.
9. Golden was great from the line, but made too many mistakes again. He just needs to bring the ball up the floor and get it to one of the bigs.
10. I don't think we stand a chance against Kentucky. Not looking forward to that game. We need to keep it slow and close. Hope I'm wrong.
11. Stokes and, especially, Maymon were so outstanding. McBee missed some shots but had 4 rebounds, 2 assists, no turnovers, and scored inside the three point stripe for the first time since high school, I believe. Good on him.

1. auburn had more sec wins than we did and held a higher rpi, believe it or not its a good win for us, rpi booster.

2. i hope that you are right, it would be nice to be able to look back on this and say this is where it all started.

3. golden and mcbee nailing free throws was nice to see. the late turnovers were a bit troublesome though.

4. if maymon can find it in him to bring that rebounding intensity every night thatd be nice. you can have a bad offensive game as we did but when you rebound and defend you will be in the game.

5. i enjoy your reports.

6. i look for his minutes to decrease big time going forward, although i think ccm will unforunately continue to start him.

7.this is why i see tatum continuing to start, i dont think ccm will buy in after just one game.

8. is it possible, absolutely. they have got to keep playing good ball though and figure it out on the road. bama, florida, ole miss, lsu, arkansas none of these teams seem nearly as scary as they were earlier in the year.

9.he needs to get smarter and unfortunately this probably comes with experience or off season work. he tries to push the ball all too often and dribbles himself way to deep. he just needs to figure out when to push and attemp to score and when to slow it down and pound it inside, thats the hardest part of being a good pg IMO.

10. im excited for our chance to win 3 straight against #1 teams, and to end cal's home winning streak.

11. i'll glady take mcbee over tatum out there any day.

Awesome bullet points, BTO. Did you post anywhere before VN? You just kinda showed up and became one of the best bball guys on here in a hurry, imo. Glad you're around. Keep it up, brah!

thanks i appreciate it. honestly no i havent every posted anywhere prior to this site, i read on here constantly though for probably the last 3 years. Dont laugh but i use to write down on notepad observations and do my own summaries and then get on here and read the post game discussion. i just kind of decided recently to create an account and join the discussions.

Ha! Every time I'm watching the game at the bar, people ask me what I'm doing scribbling notes. I tell them I'm a huge nerd and recruit them to read the bball forum on VN. Freak owes me big time.

Back to bball. What do you think we do the rest of the way? 6-4, 5-5, 7-3, 8-2?

South Carolina is the only road game I feel confident in us winning, and I don't know why I say that considering we haven't won a road game yet. LSU, maybe, but I wouldn't bet on it. The rest of the road games are guaranteed L's until they show me the ability to win a game on the road. Vandy at home is not an automatic W either IMO. I'll go with 6-4 the rest of the way and be elated with anything better.

That's definitely understandable, I guess I just feel these early games at rupp and memorial will help us.

There will be no numbered bullet points tonight. That game we watched from a hundred+ miles away didn't call for well thought out opinions or even embellishment of fact. The facts, themselves, in their slapface quality, screamed out well enough for a moron to extol them.

"Oooooooooooh, you're gonna whine about the officiating, again; like every other Tennessee-Kentucky game at Rupp."

Yes. How the hell does such an obvious disparity exist in a televised college basketball game?

No. I want to question the winning streak they currently dangle over the heads of every team who walks into Rupp Arena. It's a got dang sham.

We're not the first team to lose to them, under the circumstances of the first half, that played out this evening. I'm not even gonna look it up how many in a row it's been. I'm fairly sure we're the 30th or so. I haven't watched any other games of the 30. Tonight just showed me how probable it has been that other teams faced the same weighted scale, impossible to overcome, that we faced in the first 10 minutes tonight. There were hacks and bodies flying and fouls called left and right. The vast majority were called on Tennessee.

Kentucky is a good team; I dare say they have the ability to be great. When a great team plays to the height of their abilities, it's something to behold. I love basketball. I used to root for Danny Manning and Glenn Robinson and Chris Jackson and David Robinson. They were great and made their teams greater by dominating at their positions and lighting up the court. All of those players had it in them to take over a game and demoralize the competition. They played above the competition based on their ability alone. This Kentucky team has no one of this ilk. Instead, they rely on a haphazard style of play that is augmented by the officials who take out the opposing teams best players with two early fouls, each, and pollute the game with the Vegas line seediness that has become all too familiar in The Run At Rupp Arena.

No wonder we had no chance. Stokes and Golden were on the bench with those 2 fouls for most of the first half, while the refs were doling out fouls like Florida counts votes in an election year.

Kentucky DID take us out of our motion offense and Kentucky did succeed in shutting down our best players, but it wasn't a byproduct, even, of their inspired play; it was a circus show by the officials, who shelled out 14 free throws to the home team and 0 free throws to the visitors, all while the subs from Tennessee tried their best to bring some balance and order to the chaos. No way was anyone on our squad guilty of a technical when Lamb pussy-pushed a Tennessee player in the back. No way is it possible that Stokes attacking the basket would draw nary a whistle in the first 10 minutes.

This game tonight was a sham and a fabrication of the game of basketball. We had no right being in the same gym. They were much too well prepared. They just called a shameful game.....

KY shot 14 free throws in the first half. TN shot ZERO.

I have never been more proud of a Tennessee sports team and coach than I have been of this one. We won a close, evenly called game because Vandy had no answer to Cam Tatum, Jarnell Stokes, Jeronne Maymon, and Trae Golden. I can't say enough about The Cam Show tonight. I got a huge lump in my throat listening to the post-game show and his inspiring comments about his time at Tennessee. I wish him and Renaldo and the rest of the seniors nothing but the best of luck in their lives, going forward. Cam went through so much at UT, but today he made me believe in the power of redemption. Simply put; we don't win this game and buoy are chances for a postseason miracle without him.

I cannot believe we went 11-2 over the last 13 games. Cuonzo is the reason we did just that. Anyone who has ever questioned his coaching ability is a fool and deserves any and all ridicule that he/she gets.

Can't wait to see what we can accomplish in the SEC Tourney and whatever postseason tournament we qualify for with our inspired play. I'm thinking it's 2 wins and we're in.....

Go Big Vols!!!!
