Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

Would you rather take a kid for 1 season that is a proven contributor from a program like Clemson or have 3 years of a kid and hopefully get 2, if you are lucky 1, productive season out of him? The high school kids are no guarantee to produce but if you take a kid from a Power 5 program that put up big numbers, I am taking him all day even if it is only for 1 season. Any smart coach is going to take the proven commodity whenever your job depends on your players producing annually.

very true and why this current environment sucks for high school kids. They are the ones paying the price of opportunities

A&M leads the SEC with 8 transfers in…….numbers will change after the draft and I’ll compile a list afterwards. I get your point, it’s not CTV, it’s the system we live in. That’s what happens when you recruit 8th graders…..which has now changed going forward as it’s August of your junior year to recruit off campus. The days of staying 3/4 years at a school is basically over, not saying I like it however I like the fact our coach is taking the rules given to him and making the best out of it. Sucks for players and parents, but CTV likes his paycheck as well as numerous other coaches around the league
Reality.....

Reality.....

This is basically all anyone has been saying. I just don’t like Bruin’s subtle implication that TV is the worst of the worst. He’s playing the hand he is dealt. He isn’t some malicious bad actor. I’ve seen a lot of people discuss flaws of TV but I have never seen anyone other than Bruin complain about how he recruits/treats kids. I’ve only ever seen players say good things about him, and other than Burns I’ve never seen a kid that even “allegedly” holds a grudge against TV for how he has handled his career or his playing time.

Tennessee isn’t unique to this new era of college sports we live in. We’re just elite at competing in it. IMO, TV is such an elite recruiter, he would thrive in an era where the transfer portal doesn’t exist, too. He’s just doing what he has to right now to win and keep his job like anyone else.

This.

When I said "nags" who are afraid of heights I specifically had in mind Bruin's attack on CTV. It's not out-of-order, I suppose, to observe that he has also long been notorious for trolling and making every effort to instigate discontent in football. I'm not saying he is a bad person. It just wears thin.

Vitello is a superb recruiter. You might look at our upcoming classes. It's not an either-or situation.

Say hello to Jessica for me. 😂

Thanks

Btw I’d bet he was never on 1$ of scholarship at Tenn and wasn’t offered any to stay.

Just a guess
You do a lot of that. You don't always state it's a guess. You like to state your guesses as facts. I get some of your points, but you make a lot of assumptions based upon very little factual information.

As a friend says, don’t hate the player, hate the game.

That surprises me. I had assumed that he'd be the defacto SS next season despite the batting limitations. If true, I'm at a loss as to who they see as the solution at SS next year.
It is a critical position. It will be interesting to see what TV has planned as I am sure he does have a plan.

McKee is solid. Until Basilio stops stuffing his face on air and shows some professionalism, nope. Heck, half his show is nothing but commercials. One would think he'd stuff his face and do his belching during those ample opportunities. Nah, there are way too many professionals doing quality podcasts to waste time on his schtick.
I like Tony. He is a fan and has been around forever. He does like to bring some drama but I think his show is entertaining and he seems to be a true fan.

I feel pretty sure this type of situation happens to most every high-caliber team. Lots of movement to and from for these programs. Kevin O’Sullivan lamented on SEC Network his many “dugout problems” with his players. It’s not unique to Tennessee, but when a highly visible player is involved, focus intensifies on that player/team.
Bama has done it in football since Saban got there.

it’s worse than Nearly everyone. and with us seemingly taking even more portal guys than the other high class signing programs it’s getting worse. It’s simple math. When class sizes are higher the survival rate is going down

Arkansas is the similar comp to us. Are they taking as many portal guys ??
Here is an example of one of your guesses being stated as fact.

Agree and none of us have direct knowledge of the conversations and commitments he makes to players when he brings them in.

I've had him on the ignore list for awhile but I see Bruin is up to his usual again. He is so exhausting with his crap he spews all the time. He didn't post for like 2 years and then all of a sudden he is back. Sad day for this forum.

He finally got out on Parole. 😂😂

Fact is all or most of those guys aren’t welcome back
If you attentively followed college athletics, you would know that "git shirts" have been around forever and are not the product of the portal. The fact that they may have been much less a factor in baseball is almost certainly due to the different roster limit and the much less liberal scholarship provisions -- the latter of which most here (I gather) wish to change. Changing that would changed practices involving roster retention irrespective of the portal's existence. Without the portal some guys would have had to sit out a year when they were "encouraged" to make new arrangements. Many coaches tried like the dickens to avoid such moves but the roster limits made it impossible without harm to the program and the players who did play and want to win. So the scholarship/roster limits are bad? The scholarship limits were instituted because Bear Bryant, who was paying players (which absolutely did not begin with NIL) was taking enormous scholarship recruiting classes for the express purpose of keeping as many recruits as possible from starting at rival schools. Many of the players were never expected to play and were intentionally deceived (and flattered) coming out of high school. These players sat the bench when they could have played elsewhere, in part because they could not transfer without sitting out a year. And there was no ready way for them to make arrangements for finding a spot two years out.

If you take full countenance of the complexity of the situations past and present I think you would realize that scapegoating, playing chicken little, and burning witches -- while perhaps gratifying to certain dispositions -- is not merited. The stadium renovation, making the CWS on regular, and the remarkable new television access to games are nice, huh?
