Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

Do you think Miller is going to catch at his next stop? He has been playing OF in summer ball some. I also noticed his average this summer is not great. Last I looked he was below .200.

I suspect he just wants to play like the rest, catcher or OF, regardless, it will be at a lower conference level though.

That surprises me. I had assumed that he'd be the defacto SS next season despite the batting limitations. If true, I'm at a loss as to who they see as the solution at SS next year.
Been saying for weeks it was never gonna be Jaslove. They’ll continue to portal but requires a good option being in there. It might be an unproven guy, but remember all of these guys were unproven at once, and there’s TONS of talent on the roster. If they don’t bring anyone new in my best guess is Kendro or Rucker

I realize he doesn't hit, but we need a sterling defensive shortstop to play defense in late innings when we have the lead. If that isn't going to be Jazzy, who will it be? Any baseball team that wants to be a champion MUST have strong defense up the middle.
While Jaslove is a great glove, it’s not like other guys are totally incapable of defense. They are not going to trot out auto outs in the lineup again this year. Jaslove just doesn’t have the bat caliber of an SEC player and while It might be nice to have the option to throw him in games late to play defense or pinch run, i imagine that’s something that Jaslove might not be interested in this deep into his career. If he wants to transfer down a notch and get a bigger role I fully understand

Also watch out for Bradke Lohry if he makes it to campus. Although I still think they personally will like the more physical profiles of Kendro or Rucker. Regardless, they’ve got options. It might be an unproven guy, but once upon we threw an unproven Lawson and Ortega in our middle infield and it was one of the best duos in the country

Not playing is a reason for becoming disenchanted. And the days of paying your dues (Tre Lipscomb) are over. These kids want to play and if they can’t do it here, they’ll go somewhere else.

Again, 5 catchers? That’s why Miller left. Wonder what Cal will do. 19 pitchers or so but only 7 pitch regularly. That leaves 12 competitors getting 10-15 innings per season and that’s just not going to do it. That’s why they hit the portal.

So I’ll bet Jaz hits it, wouldn’t be surprised if Tears hits it, and still wondering what Cal will do.
I’ll be pretty shocked if Tears enters the portal. I think they have him penciled in for a big role next year

That's really strange. I thought Christian is out of eligibility after this past season.

Shawn Scott was listed in D1 Baseball's transfer tracker up until recently.

Rocky Top Insider also has a comment about Shawn Scott in its transter tracker:

LHP Shawn Scott

Left-handed pitcher Shawn Scott was a member of the Tennessee baseball team for a number of seasons but hadn’t pitched for the Vols in a game since posting a 6.75 ERA in 2.2 innings pitched during the 2021 season.

Scott was extremely unlikely to earn a major role out of Tennessee’s bullpen going forward.

Gosh, we had that already. Biggest issue was the catcher position. Good defense, poor batting %
You can't continue to give up bats, 2 or 3 in the lineup and expect to win championships.
8-9-1 killed them most of the season

If you have great pitching, you can hide a bat or two in the lineup. That's a big if. If Do and Burns had the years they were supposed to have, you wouldn't have noticed those auto outs as much (except for number one). I'm not arguing that we should favor defense over offense in all cases. I'm arguing that there is no substitute for solid defense at SS, CF, and C, and 2B. You gotta have it. If that wasn't true, Dickey would have been our catcher.

And that made it that much more unfortunate that Dickey didn't have enough time at catcher before the season started due to the injuries he had.

Situational hitting in both LSU games and the Vols could have won either game.
You have to hit the ball deep in today's game.
You absolutely cannot got o'fer at the 8,9, 1 position and expect to win
Tony knows the lack of big bats cost them a shot in the championship series. He's fixing that, I imagine he has a plan for SS as well..
