Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

I mean it’s clear he’s a back end reliever.

He’s not a starter. Sure he can do it but as a two pitch guy his future was in the pen and that’s ok. This is all so dumb.

I wish he would have stayed but I agree with TV's decision to move him to the pen even if it meant losing Chase. As I said yesterday he had an ERA of above 12 against SEC opponents and that would have landed him on the bench no matter what team he was on. I believe moving him to the pen lit a fire in him that hopefully will keep burning into next season and he goes on to have a bright future somewhere.

Hopefully this means we land the kid from Bama and this pitching staff will still be solid next year.

How did it get so bad so quick? Surely it’s more than just getting moved to the bullpen. Anyways best of luck to the young man and hope he does well in the MLB after next year. Next man up! We have the #1 recruiting class coming in and the #2 class for 2025 so far. The program is in great hands as long as Tony V is ay the Helm. I’ll trust what ever decision he and Frank make about our staff.

The program is in great hands with Tony, but are the kids in great hands with Tony? I've heard the coaching staff keeps their distance from the pitchers (does not speak with them) which leaves them wondering where they stand. With exception, I think there's a bit of unhappiness at that point by the pitchers. Then it escalates to the thoughts of "this is bs" and leaving. Pitching somewhere where they think they'll get more innings. Now enter the thought of money. Beam seems content, may be getting some money although not as much if he hit the portal. But he's safe, he has a starters job in '24 and he'll get drafted next year. Burns got bumped from the starter role, yes his numbers weren't good and for some reading this that may be enough feedback, but Burns probably wanted more. After all, he's still a kid. I think he'll be drafted ahead of Beam next year and he's probably got people in his ear throwing around 6 figure value and a starting job elsewhere. He needs to be a starter to capitalize in the draft. Back to the question though, this was no overnight decision he made, its been simmering I'll bet. But the season goes fast and he has to wait until the season is over to file for the portal (well, he doesn't have to, but he didn't want to quit during the season) and I think he needs a discussion with Tony and paperwork with the Compliance Dept. So it's been simmering for months, but all goes down from the point they come home from Omaha and now, less than a week. When does the portal close, July 13th? Not sure, but you have a small window to make your move.

If Chase is doing this because someone is in his ear telling him he needs to. Then he's getting bad advice. Pitching out of the pen wouldn't hurt his chances at starting at the next level at all. Major league teams are desperate for starting pitching he would still get a shot. I mean hell the Reds tried to make Chapman a starter at one point.

Wonder if Corona is someone we would consider? Think he played second base at Wake, not positive, but he played SS at the Baylor School in Chat, I believe. Do we have any stud SS's that we expect to make it to campus in the recruiting class? With Ahuna most likely getting drafted, just seems like one of our most needed positions to fill.

I thought Jaslove more than adequately played short while Ahuna sat out at the beginning of the season.

I will not speak bad about Burns. Every interaction I have had with Burns he has always been respectful and a very likable kid. He always takes the time to speak to the kids and sign autographs after every game. Burns has also carried himself like a professional and supported UT very well while his time in Knoxville. With that I hope he has a long MLB career and look forward to seeing what life has in store for him next.
Since Vitello has come to this program he has turned it around along as he changed the expectations. I believe Vitello will replace Burns with a quality player rather it’s through the portal or through the #1 class coming in. Now let’s get behind the guys that decided to stay and the ones that are coming in and get ready for next season. Vitello knows best and we will be fine as long as he is the coach at UT.

I dont believe the class coming in (2023 class) is ranked that high. More like 15-20 in most publications. But I’m sure UT will hit the portal for some solid pickups.

Surely, Shirley, this isnt about money.
We are spending gobs of money to rehab LNS to make us a big time player in college baseball.
So we have the money to outbid other suitors, you would think.
Maybe those who said he was upset about going to the bullpen are correct.
Anyway, I hate to see him go, especially if it’s to an SEC school.

Pitching from the pen would hurt his draft stock next year. But he wouldn’t be pitching from the pen next year (or this year) if he pitched well.

I’m no scout, but seems to me he’s a lot more draftable (including as a potential starter) going 6 innings out of the pen with an ERA of ~1 than as a starter lasting 4 innings with an ERA of 12. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's not about ERA it's about developing a 3rd pitch. Wherever he goes he's going to have to show either a changeup or curve to go in the first.
