Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

Vitello said in the interview today that if NIL is your number one concern when transferring, we probably are not the place for you. (It was in reference to a transfer portal question, not Chase Burns fwiw.)
That's refreshing. It's the way I would prefer to run this program. Build the roster through recruiting and use the portal to fill holes that pop up from portal losses or the draft, but while the LSU method of buying a team worked for them this year, I'm still not wanting to go that route. Eventually, we'll find out which method is better, but even if LSU manages to keep doing this on an ongoing basis, there's just something distasteful to it. Guess it's why I never liked the yankees in MLB when I still gave a damn about that league.

He mentioned Crawford last year. He said when they sat down, Crawford said he did not care about NIL. If money was a factor, he could ultimately sign as a pro, which he did. Vitello said that if they take a transfer, they have a role in mind for them and generally that role has worked out. Also mentioned some schools just make promises to get them there and then they sit and do not play as much as they were hoping.

How do you know he wasn't talking about Burns?

It’s worked more times than not for the Yankees throughout history

Not really. They haven’t won since 2009 and that’s one in the last 23 years.

Their nucleus of Jeter, Williams, Posada, and Rivera that won several were all originally drafted or signed by the Yankees and developed. Baseball just doesn’t work that way anymore.

I hadn’t thought of the comparison, but seems like it might be a pretty good one, from the outside looking in on both situations.

Naw. Not a good comparison. Hurd quit on his teammates in the middle of the SCar game. Chase played his heart out til the end of the season. He waited til after the season to leave the team, so he didn't just outright quit on his teammates like Hurd did.

The program is in great hands with Tony, but are the kids in great hands with Tony? I've heard the coaching staff keeps their distance from the pitchers (does not speak with them) which leaves them wondering where they stand. With exception, I think there's a bit of unhappiness at that point by the pitchers. Then it escalates to the thoughts of "this is bs" and leaving. Pitching somewhere where they think they'll get more innings. Now enter the thought of money. Beam seems content, may be getting some money although not as much if he hit the portal. But he's safe, he has a starters job in '24 and he'll get drafted next year. Burns got bumped from the starter role, yes his numbers weren't good and for some reading this that may be enough feedback, but Burns probably wanted more. After all, he's still a kid. I think he'll be drafted ahead of Beam next year and he's probably got people in his ear throwing around 6 figure value and a starting job elsewhere. He needs to be a starter to capitalize in the draft. Back to the question though, this was no overnight decision he made, its been simmering I'll bet. But the season goes fast and he has to wait until the season is over to file for the portal (well, he doesn't have to, but he didn't want to quit during the season) and I think he needs a discussion with Tony and paperwork with the Compliance Dept. So it's been simmering for months, but all goes down from the point they come home from Omaha and now, less than a week. When does the portal close, July 13th? Not sure, but you have a small window to make your move.
I don't believe for a second that Frank Anderson is "keeping his distance" from the pitchers. As for Tony, I'm sure every player knows where his office is if they have something they need to get off their chest.

Even if that’s true I don’t think you should be saying that in public. Reality is NIL matters to most kids.

It’s the same across all programs at UT. If NIL is all you care about, it’s a red flag. They want kids are willing to work and therefore, the NIL will come at the school. Not a bunch upfront.

Well, Tony’s comments pretty clearly tell us he (Tony) is always going to prioritize what’s best for the team. Burns obviously cares most about what’s best for himself. I respect that about Tony. Team comes first, and I really appreciate all the young men who have that mentality.

Disagree. That's a stance that absolutely needs to be out there. No need to waste time on kids who have that as their priority and there's no sense in a kid and family looking at UT if it's all about money because that's not our philosophy. Win/win for both parties and no time wasted. Also reduces the chances of a bad culture fit.

And some have said that Burns transferring will make us look bad in recruiting, which I don’t believe is the case. First off, most teams have players transfer out. Also, people will know the situation, and realize that the coaches made a decision that worked for CB when he was struggling, which I think is a plus.

Finally, there are many teams that have their best players transfer out every year (see NC State with White, Peebles, etc). IMO, we should feel fortunate that we are not one of those teams and this is a rare occurrence.

So I will ask. Would Nico have come if not for the big NIL deal? How is that different? I don't like pay to play NIL no matter who is doing it. It is just wrong, In My Opinion. I'm all for paying the players for truly use of Name Image and Likeness but pay to play is wrong.
LSU right now has the most baseball fans that are willing to put money in the program in college sports. Many others will do it in football or basketball but LSU has it in baseball. You can't get past the fact that they have more fans in Hoover or Omaha by a long shot. They make reservations every year for both because they expect to be there. I think UT can get there but no one is a close second at this point. Their fans are willing to pay whatever it costs individually or corporately to win in baseball and it proved itself out last night.

To be fair to Burns, he and Tony have different goals.

Tony V has a vested financial interest in the team succeeding (his contract and future earnings), first and foremost.

Chase Burns certainly wants to see his team succeed, as well, but he has an entirely separate goal of seeing himself succeed and putting himself in the best place to reach his full earning potential. If he has developed a distrust in the staff to keep him in the rotation (right or wrong) after two years of being bumped to the bullpen, then he's making a selfish decision, but one he feels he has to make to maximize his value. The grass could be greener, but if he is pitching to a 12.00 ERA at another school, next year, then he shouldn't be shocked if he again gets bumped. After all, that school has a coach who is looking out for his team's best interest, as well.
