Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

Logan Chambers has officially entered the portal. Some expect Zach Joyce to be next.
Maybe Chambers goes to Arkansas. DVH really wanted him a couple of years ago when he had a beef with CTV. Chambers really never produced here, was given plenty of opportunity his first season. Good luck to him. Don't understand why Joyce would portal out. Had he not been injured, I think he would have been a fixture in middle relief for us this season.

If Joyce is, indeed, portal bound, I think that might signal we have some arms headed our way. Yeah, spitballin'.
I don’t believe the reason we’re seeing some turnover in the roster is due to players being recruited over.
It’s been stated in this thread already, but I’ll say it again.
TV and FA do a great job of accumulating talent, and kudos to them for what they’ve done for the program.
However, IMO, there’s some work to be done in building relationships with players and creating an atmosphere that makes players want to be here.
We’re quick to deify the coaches and vilify the players without knowing the full story many times.

We always hear that CTV is a players coach, are you specifically talking about building relationships with pitchers?

I don’t buy this idea that Tony and Frank are bad at building and maintains relationships. Not at all. I mean almost all of the players who have hit the portal (except Burns) are players who probably feel like their best Avenue to playing time is somewhere else. There is nothing Tony can do about that. Either you produce or you don’t.

You also don’t land top recruiting classes in baseball (2024, 2025) without being a strong relationship manager. So far, the way Tony has built this program has been exactly how you should do it. Again, Burns has been the only loss related to non-playing time.

The cocks seem to think they have Billy Amick locked down

Well, this is actually false.

“I heard from a Tennessee friend (not someone who works for 247) that Vols coaches think it's them or Florida. For what reason, I'm not sure.

Amick has canceled his TAMU visit, at least for now.

Tennessee has always made more sense to me than Florida, but it's obviously not me making the decision.

How he feels about the coaches on these visits will be the largest determining factor.”

And I think UT is in a better place for Amick than most people realize. UF, A&M are strong competition for him and SCAR is in it for sure, but maybe not as much as people are assuming, and as I stated earlier.

You are out of touch. After the talent arrives, you will understand.

I don't necessarily agree with how he worded it, but I do think there's a little merit to it.

I'd phrase it as there's an 'opportunity for growth' (i hate what the corporate world has done to me) with TV and FA right now in these situations. In a way they're victims of their own success. You have quality talent all over the place, but only 9 spots on the card and one guy on the mound.

I don't think TV/FA have issues with relationships at all. I think they can probably improve on communication with guys in the backend of the roster as far as innings, future plans, etc. What's coming out from some of the players and other programs is that guys have been told they'd be used in certain spots, get more innings, etc- but then it doesn't happen. Some guys can watch and understand. Some guys need to be talked to about it.

Given how much 'work' this past season was for the coaching staff (they looked fried at the end of the season, it was clear they did some heavy lifting, management wise), I don't expect that issue to continue. But, its a place to work on as they go along for sure.

I will say there is not a pitcher on any staff including Mr. Skenes that thinks they threw enough. Part of playing on a top team is you will never get enough. Pitchers do not like to be taken out, they want more innings, and most don't know their role. Would Kirby want more innings? Absolutely but I think he has begun to grasp his role. Is he happy with it? No and I don't want him to be because a competitor wants to add more to the team. Some accept it and stay and others don't and leave. If you are not happy, you need to either do something about it or move on. I'm fine with that. I've told mine and others. If you want to get more innings, strike everybody out and you will get more innings. That is not possible. What we are told and what we hear are not always the same. I can tell you that if you do your job you will get more innings but all you hear is more innings. There is also the difference is the understanding of do your job. I think they communicate fine but the ones that are leaving are the ones that are not getting innings except Chase and he is, according to all of the experts, leaving because he did not like going to the bullpen. So they are all leaving due to lack of playing time. That is life. You only have so many innings and you can't pitch 25 guys 50 innings. Some will not get enough and will move on. That is baseball.

You keep hinting vaguely at this without a shred of evidence. There are no available signs that players don’t want to be here, except those who are relegated to little playing time. That in itself is a valid reason to look for playing time elsewhere.
