Portal needs after ESD [Portal, numbers and late additions - merged]

Not sure why everyone is hung up on landing another WR…if Tillman comes back, we have more than enough talent and depth there.
There’s still not really any proven guys behind him. There’s talent, but Jalin struggled last year at times and Calloway had an issue with drops. VQ has alluded to their being some potential transfers at that spot but even if there’s not you’re always looking to upgrade.

I think there will be more. Unfortunately, some guys are going to be given walking papers to make room.

We have a lot of room before we need to nudge people out. Also I thought we could get up to 7 extra players over the 25 limit due to portal losses. We will still probably snag another 3-5 recruits/Jucos between now and NSD in Feb.

Now we did self-imposed some scholly limits but I don't know if those were back counted to 2020 or not?

UT has to fit everyone except for the Covid + players under the 85. I'm not sure how many of those there are or how many players UT returns after graduations or NFL departures. Someone around here I think said 68. If so, they'll have to cull some guys.

I'm not sure about that either and I don't think UT has chosen to specify it publicly. Maybe they will after recruiting is over. Knowing what UT's limits are could be an advantage to an opponent.

as it currently stands counting the 20 they signed to LOIs yesterday, the roster is sitting on 88.

Verse will count as a transfer.

Tennessee will not take a full 25 class as they plan to impose some reductions due to the investigation. Have not heard the number but if they took 5, then they are finished with class except they could add transfers up to 7. I'M NOT SAYING THEY REDUCE BY 5, just an example.

Speculation I've seen is between signees and transfers, they will end up with 26 or 27.
So if I am reading you right, Verse would make 89... not counting Covid players? Adding 5 or 6 more brings it to around 95... meaning UT would have to lose 10 guys. Right? Not asking you to pin down the actual numbers but just verify that I understand how it would play out in the scenario you gave.

***EDIT- Just saw the link above where Covid Srs will now count against the total. Sorry. Still looks like UT will have to cull around 10 guys though.

don't know what you mean by COVID players?

Guys who got the extra year of eligibility. I just read the article linked above showing that they now count against the 85.

yes. That was decided when they made the rule to not count them in 2021. They said at that time and players getting extra years still on roster counts on the 85.

so, if Tennessee brings in 7 more players, yes the roster would be 95. So 10 have to come off by start of school in January. Plus, if they impose scholarship reductions from the investigation, those would also have to come off.

This is going to start looking like a layoff in business except it will be annual rather than sporadic. Every year guys will be evaluated for contributions and potential. A layoff inherently gives management an opportunity to cull the bottom 5%... who do just enough not to get fired. When rehiring starts, you hope to replace them with better performers.

In a way it isn't bad. Guys won't be able to just ride their scholarship out. If they don't work and study hard then they won't have their ride anymore.

oh, they will get those types but it also means that kids doing everything right but just not as talented as others will get hit with the "layoff" also.

Just wondering how many more do we sign. There are alot of kids still out there. I guess it depend's on the portal. Will we be at 85 total in 2022. Thanks

I think we can only add 5 from the portal to replace the players who went into the portal since the season started. So Evans, Maurer, Bailey, Joseph, and I forgot who else transferred since the season started.

Hodge was the other one.

we don't have 7 at this point, that is certain for now. But there are going to be some transfers happen in the next month from Tennessee. But again, Tennessee is not going to add a lot more bodies.. 5 maybe 7.

Super senior will count towards the 85 scholarship players this year. The NCAA made the supersenior a one year exemption for the 2021 season only

Dave Doeren: ‘The NCAA has completely failed us as coaches with our roster management’

Does it matter when the new recruits arrive on campus?
They probably won't all be here by January.
If some arrive later, does that give the coaches more time to remove 10 from the roster?

5 to 7 is a lot. If they are all plug and play players, that is huge.

True. And while painful, I think it will ultimately be in the best interest of those kids too. They could end up G-5 or FCS and do very well.

They won't all be plug and play. Potential has to be part of the calculation both for the player you want to bring in and the guy you have to ask to leave. I don't want to trash the players so I won't mention names but UT has a couple of guys headed into their 4th year whose potential appears to be special teams only. The coaches have to compare what they are and might be able to become with the potential of a new young player.

It won't be easy but coaches that make these evaluations well then do a good job with the separation are going to have a leg up on everyone else.

True. But if you hit on the right portal players, they can be plug and play. You have room of them from playing power five football so it makes it easier to hit than miss.

yes it does.

13 of the 20 are scheduled to arrive in January at this point.

I'm not sure how many seniors that are leaving come off scholarship in January. Some may be here to finish up and would count on 85

that's true. but over 400 from the 21 portal ended up out of football as well. which could happen to those leaving on their own also..
