'25 Portal Thread

We simply have to recruit better. It’s that simple. We don’t recruit the portal aggressively and our high school recruiting is good, not great. One of those has to change, but preferably both.

It was so abundantly clear last night how outclassed we were at just about every position. I can’t think of one position that didn’t look vastly inferior to OSU. But I’m not sure we’re going to be willing to spend the money it will take to pull talent from the portal to upgrade this roster.

Feel like this is same conversation we had last year expect it was about dbs instead of wideouts. Just have to get more speed and athleticism at Wr. It’s lacking. Excited for Staley and Matthews. Jackson, smith, and Dodson should improve that room. Have to find a difference maker from the portal tho. For experience and depth really too

I’ve seen a lot of people say this, but are we really sure they’re going to be a step up talent wise from what we had? I don’t watch a ton of tape, so maybe they are, but I feel like Webb and Nimrod were also 4-star receivers that never panned out. Squirrel has been fine, but nothing truly special. I keep hearing we have young talent coming in and it’s going to get better, but either the talent isn’t what we hope it to be or the development is several lacking. Only explanation for the huge lack of production from that unit for 2 years.

Jackson’s and Smith’s film speak for themselves imo. Should have chance to make a day 1 impact, but Tennessee doesn’t rotate or play many at wideout and just don’t know why. I think that hurts with development imo. Tennessee needs guys that can win on the outside, and just didn’t really have it this year.

We need an elite WR like Jeremiah Smith. I hope Matthews and Staley and Travis Smtih and Radarious Jackson and Joakim Dodson get us back on track. Either way you have to keep stacking talent.
Jeremiah Smith is a different type of an elite wide receiver. Witnessed a top 3 pick in the draft. Tennessee needs another Cedric Tillman type really.

He could probably start for half of NFL teams right now. Just a total freak. Made our likely future first round corner look like a d2 player

Development.
Squirrel was a good #3 as a freshman.
Has he gotten better ?
Did Webb, Nimrod get better?
Leacock was a top 85 recruit, did he develop at all?
Did Thornton get better or just healthier?

Guess we keep forgetting that bama lost to Vandy and got throttttttled by a terrible gutted/depleted Oklahoma team??? I did say Nico played 10% good this year that will include the bama game. Bama was not a top ranked defense this year. You just see bama and think of Nick Saban. That team is not and will never be the same as when Saban was coaching them.
Probably also forgetting that Ole Miss got smacked on their home field by a terrible Kentucky team that didn't win a single other conference game this season.

Heck we could have Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams and we wouldn't figure out how to get them the ball besides screen passes and curl routes
Youre prob right. We would have them running to the sidelines every route and would find a way for them to never see open space to work. The scheme needs a serious adjustment.

Last night we got smoked with 40 simple shallow crosses and ive never seen one under heupel. They threw to the backs, used motion, the TE and consistently used the middle of the field. Must be nice.

Why is it that our DL didn’t show up yet again vs a depleted Oline that just got whipped vs Michigan? It was the same vs GA after they got whipped by Miss.
because we played above our ratings. we coached three stars up.

OSU, Georgia, and Oregon have been there. They start 5 stars, and rotate guys in. We got outclassed, out talented. End of story.

all Day had to do was move around chess pieces.
