What? Matthews wasn’t even ranked a top 5 WR on the services we actually follow (he was #5 on ESPN and rivals - his best position rankings)

Jeremiah Smith was the #1 WR on every single service except ESPN where he was #2. He was also rated the #1 player overall in 3 of 4 services (ESPN had him #4).

Anyone who thought Matthews was the #1 WR was kidding themselves.
He was a top 30 overall player, a 5 star. Obviously, Smith had a great year, but we don’t get too 30 overall WR’s very often.

A) these numbers keep changing.
B) there was no reason for Tennessee to spend as much as Ohio State last year. Keep in mind that most of the NIL money spent is to retain current players, not obtain new ones. Ohio State only added 4 players from the portal.

They spent a lot of money to RETAIN what they had. And what they had was more talented than what Tennessee had. Tennessee would have been stupid to pay as much to retain its current roster as Ohio State paid to retain its roster.

As for the players they added through recruiting and the portal: Would we have gotten Judkins or Jeremiah Smith or Downs if we had offered what Ohio State offered? I highly doubt it. We’re not there yet. So Tennessee paid its roster what it should have and Ohio State paid its roster what it should have.

Absolutely. Doesn’t have anything to do with the point tho which is if someone thought Matthews was the #1 WR in the class that had Jeremiah Smith then they might need to get their head checked.

Great post and great points.

I disagree with the bolded though. For players we really want, we seem to come out on the winning end of the NIL fight a decent amount of the time (thinking of OSU fans saying we got Sanders because we came through on NIL).

I think our perceived weakness there is more due to the staff being less willing to throw around money like madmen, and wants to optimize their spending. If the number goes above our valuation, we’ll take the “loss” and move that money elsewhere.

It sucks in the moment, but that’s the right strategy imo.
It’s a gradual transition. We spend a little more each year but are trying not to waste money. We are playing more of a long game

Could be, but Boo isn’t gonna play 15+ snaps each game on offense.

Branch would. Makes more sense for someone to leave if you’re bringing in someone that actually plays that position, but I guess you can look at it as Staley & Boo taking over Squirrel’s spot.
This kinda reminds me of the Carl Pickens situation. Boo may wind up exclusively on O

Squirrel just never got better

cant catch a pass without jumping, sure he's super fast but its completely straight line so your limited with what you can do with him. Really doesnt make anybody miss with the ball in his hands and on top of being made of paper mache you arent losing much here
He always seemed like a package guy to me and never an every down receiver. The screen pass he caught against NC State really highlighted what he can do. Heck, I thought he’d be good running 2 yard mesh routes over the middle, but not really losing a ton of production.

Only 12 more hours till we find out if those Nico stories were anything to freak out about or not.
Didn’t squirrel post a similar picture early in the year pretty much talking **** about Nico
Funny that he posted it after squirrel left
Don’t know if they were the best of friends and also Nico was advocating for boo on offense

Boo has a long way to go to be compared with Carl Pickens. CP was a difference maker on defense. Boo was ok as a freshman, CP was freshman All- American and All SEC safety as a freshman. CP led SEC in kickoff returns as a freshman with one TD return. CP had 4 INTs as a freshman with one pick six. Boo has potential, but he is nowhere near Carl Pickens after his freshman year.
I understand your comparison. I hope Boo shines on offense.
