'25 Portal Thread

IMO, there have been only 2 WRs that have hit the portal that have proven to be a legitimate WR1 type of guy at the Power 4 level. Those 2 players are Singleton and Concepcion. Branch and Robinson from USC are quality guys with 5 star pedigrees, but their production thus far hasn't reflected their recruiting ranking. Nic Anderson has 1 year of pretty good production and zero production his other 2 seasons. Dane Key has been productive at UK, but also hasn't exactly put up eye popping numbers. And Micah Hudson did virtually nothing his freshman year at Texas Tech. Maybe you could argue Kevin Coleman. But that's it.

Do people really want to pay a million (or more) for WRs in the portal who have largely not lived up to their hype?

I would’ve agreed with you until people I trust like pate confirmed Duke paid a 3 star 8 million for 2 years.
Mensah was a hot name and Duke had to money to burn and no starting QB going into 2025. Much like professional teams, when you are desperate and have money to burn, you tend to make rash decisions.

He's asking $3 million. Not a chance bro
Gotta wonder what this kind of money does to the players approach to the game with kids this age not to mention the locker room. That Cam Ward situation really surprised me. Can't imagine quitting in the middle of a game after achieving a personal record. Just a sad state we're in as a society and such a black eye for the sport we all loved so much. Don't recognize the game anymore. One thing is certain, the days of really being invested in individual players is long, long gone....at least for me. There are no more "teams" in college sports. It's a collection of individuals who play not for the love of the game, but for the love of the money. Gonna guess the Miami coach won't be the last to walk away from this mess. Bet more than a few fans will, too.

What’s the difference in opting out for the entire game vs playing a half for a record then opting out besides optics?

And just like in pro ball, those desperate teams ruin the market for everyone else

I rarely post, but dear lawd the gnashing of teeth is reaching the point of criminal! Coaches job is to coach each season to win that season while developing talent for future seasons and putting a product on the field that brings in revenue along with future talent. Nico wasn’t ready in 2023 so we rolled with Milton who we all know is not “better” than Nico. That decision likely resulted in at least 1 extra win, maybe more but “could” have jeopardized relationships/hurt feelings. Same thing happened with the WR room in 2024, if the young guys were doing the things the coaches were asking them to do, were reliable, and obviously more talented than the vets they would have played instead of them. 2025 is the year of the ‘23 WR class, 2024 was not. Talent level at the position is rising, QB is growing, the offense will hum again…. Or coach gets fired in 3 years. Vol_Nation should chill and enjoy the ride. Ya’ll are wild.
People enjoy the coaching searches a lot. Without them they have to seek out other dramas.

You opt out to protect yourself from injury is one thing. To play for a personal record then bail on your team after "getting yours" is quite another. Speaks to the character of the player IMO.

We are not more talented at WR. Ced and Hyatt are NFL receivers. Hooker is an NFL qb who’d already played for 3 years when he got to UT.

Joe was obviously limited as a QB in a number of respects we don’t need to rehash. Nico is a talented true sophomore learning the position and offense. Knock the staff all you want on the WR evals and development, but those guys are not nearly as good as ‘22.

That is how and why you have regression. No program’s trajectory is always up. Doesn’t mean the scheme is ineffective.
Hooker, Tillman, and Hyatt gave extra time and effort to learn the system CJH wanted to run. CJH made comments about all three being around constantly, especially Hooker.

He wanted the record then he benched himself to prevent unneeded injury in the pop tart bowl. Same thing in my eyes

Both are awful in my eyes too, though. But if you allow one, I don’t see the difference in the other.

To be fair that QB deserved 8mil.

Nico got 8, so why not that kid? As far as talent, stats, etc. he’s pretty on par with Nico.
I worked 40 years and came nowhere near that number that he'll make in less than a tenth of that time. Insane.

Totally agree here. An old guy like me grew up with a vastly different game. I just can't relate to this one...on several levels.

I’ve edited my post to protect Hunters reputation. Feel free to edit it from the quoted posts if you feel it best for our program.

@KingVFL @T2P_Priceless @Pawleysvol @Jackcrevol @volstudent26 @BP4Prez

Again I apologize. Was not warranted and does not benefit our program.
Why are you apologizing? You didn't tweet that or write the stuff about TVC. It's out there and was fair for you to bring it here to discuss. It was cleared up and and we are all better for it.

If we are tampering, I like Jordyn Tyson from AZ State a lot. Some buzz that he could enter the draft, but given his season ending injury I think he comes back for another year to improve his draft stock.

Carnell Tate could be interesting as well if he decides he doesn't want to play 2nd fiddle to Jeremiah Smith. We have some history with him.
