We brought in McCoy because he was a really good player.
Did Martinez “Make “ him an all American.

Now if he had turned the players we replaced into all Americans then I’d go with great job,
But for now I’d say he’s just doing his job.

He made slow safety into an all SEC player.

Not sure how physically ready he is, but Dasaahn Brame just jumps off the screen when I watch his film. I really would love to see him carve out a role in this offense behind Kitselman

I doubt Brame's frame is ready to play much as a Freshman. We also still have Ethan Davis to pair with Kitselman.

Yes. Gibson was pretty good but we need 4-5 star CB’s to compete with the best. Our corners got torched by Ohio state and georgia. But if you’re content with pretty dang good. I bet you were happy with Butch.

We saw the type of talent we need when we played the big dogs (Georgia and Ohio state). We need to recruit and develop better. CWM doesn’t recruit top CB’s.

Corners were the problem? That’s your assessment? Our safeties were the issue in both games, also our lbers not being able to cover.

And you couldn’t be further off with the Butch comments. We should’ve won the east bare minimum with the talent he had here. Got crap from people for calling that out now I’m getting crap on the other side as a Butch supporter?

I’m not going to get into whether he’s the best we can hire because I don’t know. I’m sure there are others that would do just as well or better.

But, Justin Wilcox confirmed the fundamental technique on Gameday this year when analyzing film, and that seems to be what Martinez teaches. He’s had a big number of defensive backs drafted, even at UCF. He’s subject to what his DC calls sometimes. Additionally, there were several on here that suggested the secondary talent had to get better for the play to get better, and that happened this year. This staff did not inherit great talent in the secondary.

I’m a believer in criticizing and praising. Our secondary was bad in year one (probably talent and coaching) under Heupel but was much better this year. Some have made up their minds and don’t care if the product is better.

How many new coaches with limited options fill their staff with him? We’ve done it twice and he has been a weak link both times for both staffs. Georgia had freak talent and couldn’t get it done. They moved on and have replaced Bama as the team in the SEC. He’s not getting it done and you can argue whatever you want. Look at the on field results. In big games that matter, we get carved up. Every year he’s been here.

He was fired when Jancek was. Butch hired Charlton Warren. The secondary got worse though. It wasn’t an upgrade.

If its the coaches that make great players then why do you have to have 5*s or can the coaches only get so much blood out of a 3* turnip?

I think this coaches discussion is much more nuisanced than most posts comment on.

Same thing with the Pope conversation but yet UGA and Bama wanted him.

Martinez is an average recruiter and average at coaching fundamentals. Our DBs rarely turn their heads and play the ball. In the past we’ve had lots penalty issues from this. People have also been upset with the cushion our corners play with on critical third downs. On 3rd and 5 we’ll line up with 10 yards of cushion and give up an easy 5-yard hitch completion for a first down. Makes no sense. See the 2023 Missouri and Alabama games.

So he had one good player in McCoy. Ok fine. We didn’t play a team this year with a representative passing attack this year until Ohio State and we got exposed.

Martinez is “fine”. Coaches like him are not going to get us where we want to go. He’s retirement age and it’s time for him to go do something else.

First, as I posted above, Justin Wilcox confirmed the fundamentals of turning your head on Gameday this year. It’s called being “in phase.” If a DB is not in pgase, he has to keep running. There isn’t a way to make a play on the ball if you are steps behind. When you turn, you lose speed. Maybe some coaching hasn’t been good enough for some of our players, but I don’t believe the technique is wrong.

Second, I would presume that defensive alignment is on the DC, not the position coach. It’s based on the play call.

You can’t say McCoy was going to be an AA anywhere else.

Our CB’s took the biggest jump by far this year on our team and Martinez deserves credit for that

Is this a joke? Let’s not pretend like McCoy was some unknown 2* that Martinez coached up. Our CBs have been bad since he has been here. He should have been fired last year. He has one decent year and all of a sudden you get posts like yours .

Already posted that you were wrong on McCoy but does Martinez not get credit for bringing in 4*’s that play well or does it only count as good coaching if you take an unknown player?

I doubt he he bails on Texas as a depth piece to come to Tennessee to be a depth piece. He may enter, but he'll be looking to go somewhere as the feature back.

I said the same thing about the kid from Dakota that’s gonna be a senior, but some explained he would still be featured a lot and get 500+ yards.

Some also said whoever we get could compete and be the starter.

So who knows…
