'25 Portal Thread

I see people use this argument all the time. It's been widely talked about by people who went and watched practice during that time that Joe looked much better than Hendon when they both first got here.

It wasn't until Hendon played and we realized he was a gamer that it was obvious who to start from there.
They couldn’t get HH to throw the ball downfield. He only wanted to check down. We saw that in the 2021 spring game. It started to click in the Tennessee Tech game after Joe was hurt vs. Pitt.

Wonder what our numbers are looking like? I was looking at LWS's thread in the FF. He has us at 80, but that's including Pearce who should be going pro. I didn't look, but it probably also counts the two commits that weren't EEs and won't actually count until they enroll in the Summer. If that's the case, then we're probably around 77 atm, with our limit being 83. So that would mean 5 spots open, but we'd have to have two more guys enter the portal in the Spring. So if we have 5 spots, and we're supposedly looking to add 3 WRs and a RB, that leaves one spot for either an OL or a DT. Unless we somehow land the Branch brothers, in which case the last spot would go to Zion, a safety. Wonder if we would be allowed to carry 85 in the offseason as long as we were trimmed down to 83 by the start of the season? These Pruitt sanction suck. I wish they had reached a settlement, and we had the 105 limit.

Just had that info floating around in your mind? Geez. I'm seriously impressed. Larry would be proud.

We have a lot of folks here who sit on their couch and imagination-coach without realizing that that's far different than coaching at a high level.

Or even coaching.

I think none of our WR transfers are going to end up in a better situation than they left. Not sure what other coaches think about Matthews but he is rated as a 92 transfer on 247 and didn't really show a lot to garner a big NIL deal somewhere. Squirrel put a lot of missed catches and falling down when he should have kept his feet catches on tape this year that may hurt his stock. Think they might find out the NIL grass isn't greener somewhere else. That or the outlook here was just so bad that they are taking their chances. Hopefully this is not the case and just poor judgement by young men on jumping ship.

One thing on Pope i have never seen him coach during practice to say one way or another its his coaching. One thing i do know his Receiver Core were open quite a bit down field and how many over throws by our QB so what if he hits majority of them what do the numbers look like for our WR's . Now again I have not seen practice to know his ability. Maybe he does need to be replaced or we are in an era were just about every player is spoiled and never work hard to improve. In CHRIST Alone

No idea what we are doing at the position. Had weeks to find WRs but sat on our hands because apparently there was a time until Squirrel left that they thought they were good at WR lol.

No idea how Heupel can’t see this is on the position coach.
How do you know they sat on their hands? How do you know they didn’t already have a plan?

A reporter implying that doesn’t make it so.

And as fans, we don’t have to have an idea what “they’re” doing. Usually it’s best we don’t.

Looking at Larry's list, I don't think he counted Bishop, who up until this point has been non-scholarship. But I believe VQ said he would be put on scholarship. So that takes a slot. I didn't count Dodson or House yet because they won't count toward numbers until they enroll in the Summer. If Bishop goes on scholarship, and we get lucky and Matthews stays, we would be at 81. If AJ comes that would be 82. Not sure we would have room for the Branch brothers. Do we have to maintain the 83 for this semester, or do they only count the season?

These Pruitt sanctions suck because we could definitely use more help. Kind of wish we had pushed more players that don't seem to be contributors towards the portal.

I'm good with that, to a degree. I just think this demonstrates that coaches aren't always infallible. Even should we take a step back next year, it may lead to three steps forward. You learn and improve as you go. But I still think we need some staff changes. Pope and Elarbee would be my choices. The decision is ultimately Heupel's to make, but the decisions he makes will ultimately decide how long he's our coach. I hope he makes the right ones. And no, I'm not saying my opinion is right. I could be wrong. If he keeps them and their units succeed, I'll admit I was wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. I apologized to Willie Mo already. But if he keeps them around and they continue to struggle, that's a bad look on him. I just want to see us win.
If it's true that the coaching staff was surprised by the mass exodus of WR, then that is on Pope. It's his job to have the pulse of that room. So WR recruiting has improved, but production & morale are crap and portal evaluation & player development are iffy. And this isn't the only room where there appear to be some sort of systemic issue: OL, S ...

How honestly coach evaluates and addresses these failures will be important in understanding whether he believes continuity/seniority/etc are greater priority than the areas where we're seeing lack of acheivement.

Makes it sound like our coaches were caught with their pants down. Not what we've been told about them having a "strategy".

Still feels like there's a lot to the story we're not hearing. This offseason, thus far, has been strange. I get we needed to shed numbers to make room, but I doubt the plan was to clear the WR room to do that.
It explains the Nico camp getting nervous and the sit down.

I agree, this staff was blindsided by this. Everybody seemed to think we were cutting bait but in reality we were losing guys we had plans for and weren't prepared to replace. How things played out all but verify this.

The wheels came very close to coming off, if Nico had left this program would have been set back another year or two at least.

I'm not going to point fingers but there were failures at multiple levels.

Let the youngins eat. Target Kitselman and Davis a ton. Grab some depth if nothing else.

Should be interesting to see how it works out!
I agree, it's all you can do. Try and get some portal players that can contribute.

What worries me is Nico struggled last year with experienced wr's. We need him to take a big step forward this year...

There's still another transfer window in the spring and we will see some moved out then as it becomes evident they won't start. There will still be coaching changes as well that will lead to players from other teams jumping in the portal in the next few weeks. I think we can exceed roster size going through spring practices as long as we cut down by season start. I think that will be the path and let competition settle it out

From On3 - "The spring window in April remains. The portal will only be 10 days, lasting from April 16, 2025, and shutting down on April 25, 2025. The transfer portal will open for 30 days whenever a head coach leaves their program, allowing athletes to leave and decide on their future, according to NCAA guidelines"

When you look at current roster, has WR recruiting really improved though?

There aren’t these kind of issues in other rooms.

I’d never advocate for someone to lose their job and I am neither qualified or informed enough to comment on Pope’s coaching. However, I do think it is valid to question what’s going on there and I do think someone with a more proven track record would attract more talent at that position.

Yeah and you see people use the argument all the time as an excuse why so and so isn’t playing.
And they use it as absolute proof that so and so shouldn’t be playing.

The above is proof that they can be wrong.

Maybe when they have a 5 star talent they might have a “gamer “ that will show out in actual games.

But you gotta give em a chance. Not just a few snaps here and there.

Hooker got a chance because Joe got hurt.
Period. Not because they gave him a shot to see.

Why aren't we looking at a WR right in our backyard? Sam Phillips at UTC. He is a solid WR and proven and he has taken visits already to Iowa, USC and others.

I know this is mainly football, but I don't care if Jefferson is a downgrade or even swap for Matthews..... The AD would be getting a 2 sport player with the other sport being our most surging program in the AD.....

Like this is a no brainer. We all want football team to be better with portal guys, but if this move is even swap but helps Tony V, why the b!tching and moaning?

Amari Jefferson isn’t playing baseball. He wouldn’t be able to crack the lineup considering the demands of playing 2 sports at a high level. It’s not like Tony V is struggling to field a competitive team. There are going to be elite freshmen redshirting this year because there isn’t enough playing time for them. AJ isn’t just going to step in a few weeks before first pitch and play.
