'25 Portal Thread

I understand that some posters live to get offended by any post they deem as "negative", but I think it's completely fair for any fan to be underwhelmed by our portal strategy thus far. We've been slow and methodical while other teams have been quite aggressive. Thankfully, there's still teams left that could lose players to the portal. And we'll see if things take a turn to make everyone happy. But I doubt it. Some people are never happy. Simple fact of life. But I can understand being underwhelmed RIGHT NOW.
Have we though? Someone posted a graphic the other day of SEC teams and portal recruitment. The teams we want to be compared to (Bama, UGA, TX, etc.) are in the same boat as us in terms of low number portal recruits. We also don’t have a ton of spots to recruit for (thank you Pruitt). So I’d much rather be safe with who we go after than back the truck up for the flashiest guy in the portal.

No one currently in the portal is comparable to Prego, IMO.

I'm good with going with the young guys. Hopefully they perform fine, protect Nico, and we have a great year. If we struggle, then maybe Nico comes back for an extra year. And maybe we see Elarbee is not the guy. As much as I've said he's not, I actually hope he proves me wrong. I will gladly eat crow for better pass protection next year.
4 years of CGE is enough evidence..... Just sayin

How do you get too aggressive AT THIS TIME in the portal when we have a max of two open spots according to the LWS ROSTER study.

Gonna have to clear some space intelligently and with class by the conclusion of spring and then go shopping.

Not pulling a Kiffin in the early period is not justification for alarm.

I just didn’t want to get to that point…potentially.

If that ends up being the case, then our season in my opinion didn’t go as planned, and that’s a problem. I guess having the occasional 8-4/9-3 season isn’t bad, but I absolutely hate seeing glimpses of potentially going back to our past.

I get it, Heupel has done nothing to show that he’s going in that direction, but some of the stuff I’ve seen is stuff we’ve seen the past, and we all saw how that went (hiring/firing his friends situation is one example)

I truly like Heupel, I think he’s done a hell of a job, and I don’t want him to be another coach on our list. I hate being at the bottom and don’t want to head in that direction ever again.

People can take my bitching and complaining as being negative and that’s fine, I’ll wear that badge. I also understand that it does nothing, but this is a board where I can throw my thoughts out there.
Some skepticism I think is warranted after all the past struggles. I think Heupel is giving his people time. I do think he will make decisions based on the best thing for the program but he’s not going to do that based on a year or even two of results based on where we were a few years ago. I do think now everyone has had time to get their guys in and develop, it’s time for people to show if they belong here or not. That first couple of years was such a crap show it was hard to bring in elite talent. Based on the talent we’ve brought in I would say at least some staff is performing above what would be expected.

We're shopping for like 4 players, with the intent that a couple of more will portal in Spring. It's been stated we're looking for a RB, WR, OG, and a DT. I know what LWS roster study says, but numbers don't have to match until the season starts.

I mean we’ve been one of the top offenses in football for several of those years. This year sucked though I’ll grant you that.
I believe the rushing stats are a product of the wide splits. Not so much his teachings. He doesn't recruit well. He isn't the only coach we should show the door. WR coach would probably be my first choice.

I think some of you want to build the entire roster through the portal. You freak out about high school recruiting every year then when it comes time to replace a starter you want them to get a transfer rather than have one of their high school recruits take that spot. Also, this fanbase seems to be notorious for giving up on freshman after their first season.

Newsflash for some of you. Players can get better from year to year.

Also, people keep mentioning the Spring portal. It'll only be open for entry for 10 days. Thus far, the talent in the Spring window has been less than the talent in the Winter window the last couple of years. Your better talent enters after the season so they can go through Spring practice at their new school.

If Deion goes to the NFL, there’s two guys off the bat I’d want.

Seaton and Miller.

Seaton and Sanders can rock, paper, scissors over RG and RT.
We aren’t going after Seaton. We already have Heard and Sanders. Although I know some of you have given up on Heard because that’s what this fanbase does.

You are absolutely correct, but what development have you seen at WR and OL…the two positions we need.

We need another recover just from a numbers perspective. Our young talent at receiver is better than it has been the past 2 seasons. OL criticism is fair but let’s see what they come up with before trashing them.

Some of you get so enamored with every player in the portal. Not every player in the portal is a great player. Some of you act like they are.

I've never advocated for building the roster through the portal, so that leads me to believe you're one of those sensitive types that overreacts to anything you deem "negative".

I've been begging to see Elarbee's high school guys contribute. Apparently, most still aren't ready as the coaches feel the need to look for OL in the portal.

I’m only enamored by the ones that make their conference team. Just wanted to throw that out there. :)

But I get what you’re saying. All fair points.

SMH...

our NIL must be flat broke. Getting a bit embarrassing that we seem to get outbid on just about everyone so far... crazy that the elite teams, who we are supposedly trying to get to their level, seem to have unlimited funds...If we can't compete in the NIL game and get who we want because we don't have the money, then we're not going to be competing for championships and the schools with the $$$$, will continue to feast. College football is so broken.
Do you contribute?

I don't know if that is necessarily indicative of most not being ready. When you are replacing nearly your entire starting five, cherry picking a portal guy or two for some insurance isn't a poor strategy. I also, don't get the feeling we are desperate to add another guard. I think, based off activity and info from King, they are open to adding another guard if it is the right type of player but they feel comfortable rolling with what we have plus Moe if a guy we want doesn't come.

He seemed pretty definitive we would take another OL.

We're going to take another guy here.

Could we be selective with money because we are in on a lot of blue chip 26 guys as well? If we get most of the group we are in on it gonna cost a decent amount. I know it’s win now at all costs but if im the coach im planning for now and the future. I do the same with my money now.

So the expectation is we need to gofundme a new offensive lineman? It’s the fans fault we can’t afford any players?
The post is directed at people who bitch about how “embarrassing” our NIL is. If you’re not contributing (hell even $5 a month) why complain?

They will if the coaching , S&C, and experience is a positive factor.
