'25 Portal Thread

We do have Jacobe getting healthy and Jourdan Thomas back as upperclassmen, and a couple bluechip freshmen DBs coming in. The cupboard isnt bare at Safety. Wouldnt hurt to add another one but its not a dire need IMO. We actually dont have any dire needs. Which speaks to this staff recruiting and retaining our roster. Be nice to add another Guard, a Safety, maybe a DT and a WR....but we dont have to add anyone at all this portal season IMO beyond Moe and Jefferson. I am interested to see what happens, but not in the least bit stressed about our roster. We have a 9-3 type year coming regardless IMO where a bunch of young guys get much needed reps at WR, LB and on the Oline and Dline.

So the expectation is we need to gofundme a new offensive lineman? It’s the fans fault we can’t afford any players?
Is there a system set up where fans can donate to help get players? Yes there is. There are currently 4004 memberships of the Volunteer Club. That’s pathetic. How many people are on VN?

Is everyone in this site donating? Highly doubt it. Why not? My view is if you aren’t donating then you shouldn’t be complaining. Why can’t our great fan base kick in more?

Also, people keep mentioning the Spring portal. It'll only be open for entry for 10 days. Thus far, the talent in the Spring window has been less than the talent in the Winter window the last couple of years. Your better talent enters after the season so they can go through Spring practice at their new school.

I think the better assumption is questionable. Guys that know they are not starters may bail early, while those that are in it stick until spring clarifies their position. It is possible some high priced mercenaries hit early too, but not how we want to spend our money IT SEEMS. Some quality evaluation guys at lessor programs might be tempted with leaked allocations. Fit is still a priority.

Regardless spots are tight and CJH has shown he has a plan. Shoot barbs post spring.

Exactly. I increased my donation this year, yet oddly enough, I’m still not complaining. Why? Because I understand that the folks at Spyre are working their asses off.

The people on here crying about getting outspent are the type of people who love to point fingers at everyone but themselves. They don’t have a clue what’s going on or why, but because they’re petulant children, they have to throw a fit when things don’t go their way. Doesn’t matter if what they’re crying about makes any sense.

These aren’t the people you want in your corner in life.

Could we be selective with money because we are in on a lot of blue chip 26 guys as well? If we get most of the group we are in on it gonna cost a decent amount. I know it’s win now at all costs but if im the coach im planning for now and the future. I do the same with my money now.
We're probably selective on money because the vast majority of NIL needs to go to retention, as opposed to addition. It's not like we sign our current guys and they are immune from portalling. If you go making it rain for a couple of new guys, and overpay them vs your roster, you cause issues with your current roster.

That'd be any successful program, not just us.

You know, we are in the day of the "Other people should pay off my student loans" mindset. Why not throw in the idea that other people should pay for the football success we seem to so desperate for?

It's a product. If you refuse to participate in the market, you shouldn't expect a right to the product you wanted.

I noticed the list of "Big Donors" only included Peyton Manning as someone who has played at UT and donates lots of money. What about all the other VFLs out there who have made it big? We have numerous players who have made it to the MLB, NBA, and NFL. Why aren't they supporting Tennessee athletics?? Or maybe they are but just not as much as some of the others. Just thought with as many athletes who have come from TN that there would be a few more athletes on that list, imo.

Maybe they do contribute and just do not want to make a fuss about it. The silent majority?

The post is directed at people who bitch about how “embarrassing” our NIL is. If you’re not contributing (hell even $5 a month) why complain?
I am not trying to start an argument, but I do have strong feelings about the expectation that we the fans need to donate money to afford players. I am not certain, but I would be interested to see if any other professional or semiprofessional leagues have something similar. I wouldn't donate a cent to the Titans so they can afford a new QB in the draft for example.

I am happy to buy jerseys, tickets (obviously donation required, but you get the tickets in exchange so it is not exactly a real donation), access to events, etc. But donating just seems wrong when the schools are already raking in millions.

Chauncey Gooden was a top 200 overall IOL this recruiting class. He would be a nice pickup too.

We never really pursued him last year when he was in our back yard. Doubt we go after him now.

I’d be interested to see if Amari McNeil wanted to come back here. He was showing promise after his second year here before heading to Colorado last year.

I disagree with safety play. We haven’t had good safety play in a long time. They are less valued in the NFL but they can be game changers in college.

Thomas is a good hitter but not good enough in pass defense. Turrentine seems average. Not enough data on Farooq.
