'25 Portal Thread

Lol right?

It is pretty sad you can’t criticize a thing even if you’re generally happy with where the program is at the moment.

We’re doing hot garbage in the portal to this point. Period. Ain’t no sugar coating it until it changes

I’m sure someone will comment and say the portal isn’t the answer and then retardedly site Ole Miss as an example.

Oregon has 8 four star transfers currently, all starter quality. They aren’t worried about hurting feelings.

They will be in the playoffs again next season with a team full of transfers. ITS ALL ABOUT WHO YOU CAN GET.

We had a chance with Thompson and Pregnon, but don’t want to pay. It’s crazy.

I don’t believe you have to have to hit the portal at all times but when your recruits from high school have transferred out or failed to be developed (WR) or failed to get on the field ( OLINE) you better hit the portal and hit hard at those positions. My biggest fear is Nico will never reach his potential due to lack of protection and no one to throw the ball too.

How much do you contribute again?

According to Basilio, the staff spent the majority of the NIL budget on their high school class, which is pretty pathetic considering it's in the 10-15 range. Basically, said they better hope their evaluations are correct because it feels like they overpaid for a lot of guys. Obviously, a good portion of the budget also went to retaining guys currently on the roster. Just really don't see any way this team isn't worse unless there is a ton of development in key areas.

More "feelz", less facts. From Tony Freaking Basilio, no less. That's exactly what we need in the discussion.

(I'd say they spent the majority of their NIL on returning roster retention, and they will be careful not to overspend on HS class or portal, in order not to upset that. But that's just a guess considering that that's what I have seen reported elsewhere, and makes a lot of sense.)

I missed the memo where portal szn is over.

I mean sure, signing a bunch of guys would be fun and exciting but I’d say the staff has earned the benefit of the doubt with regards to the portal.
I agree, until they prove otherwise. Also, to beat the dead horse some more, they'd been recruiting against rumors and fact of pay-for-play-sanctions and that negative recruiting. Even with that off the table, we have self-imposed sanctions that we're still dealing with.

Not everyone shares that same perspective, though. It is what it is.

Basilio lol

I think he'd go somewhere he knows he'll be the likely starter at Tackle. From reports, we have Heard and Sanders locked in to the T starting spots. Maybe he'd be open to playing G for a season until Heard leaves?
I doubt Sanders is locked in. I don’t care if he is a highly touted 5 star.
He’s going to have to prove he is ready before they just hand him the job.
He may be, we’ll see.

Multiple insiders have essentially said as much. Obviously he's got to earn it too, but it would be surprising to see the coaches add someone they expect to start over Sanders.
One insider has said that’s his opinion. So, not reports. I’d be fine with it if he did get the starting role but don’t skew information to fit a narrative

Basilio likely meant "available budget" and not the whole NIL budget itself. And in that case, it makes sense that the recruiting class would represent the majority of the available NIL budget.

Let's say Tennessee spends 20 million on NIL each year (just a random guess, I have no evidence what we actually spend). Let's also assume around 15 million is already accounted for by players currently on the team. That would leave 5 million of available budget to pay towards your recruiting class and portal players. Given that each team will sign 25 HS players with more than half being at least 4 stars, it makes sense that the HS recruits would absorb most of that available cash, leaving less around 2 million to spend on portal players.

Argue semantics all you like. The likelihood we take a portal player that we would expect to start over Sanders is extremely slim. Part of the reason Sanders committed was the path to a starting role.

He left out the NIL budget being also spent on the existing roster. McCoy, Gibson, and others did not enter the portal for a reason.
