'25 Portal Thread

Depending on Recruiting, I would say take:
2-4 OL, I believe we have 3 really good OL Tackle recruits lined up. Not a true freshman job though.
2-4 DL, I know we lose at least 3-5 to graduation/pros
1 Safety
1 LB
1-2 Blue Chip WRs

If we landed all of those, that would be 12 which is quite a bit when adding 20-25 from normal recruiting.

I feel the same way. I hope the coaching staff approaches the portal the way they did last offseason. We were all so upset over not getting certain guys (Joly, Nolen to a lesser extent), and yet Heupel and company addressed our 6 biggest needs (CB, LT, WR, TE, S, DT) with high character team oriented guys who were all immediate contributors. Reminder of who these guys were:
-Lance Heard
-Jermod McCoy
-Chris Brazzell
-Holden Staes AND Miles Kitlesman
-Jakobe Thomas and Jalen McMurray
-Jaxon Moi

Then you remember other guys that we've gotten in the portal and you'll start to realize just how good these coaches are at evaluating portal talent/ character. Guys like:
Hendon Hooker
Omarr Norman Lott
Bru McCoy
Donte Thornton

I have full faith in these guys' ability to address needs of this team while ensuring there won't be a disturbance in the overall culture from these new players arrival

Part of me also thinks that this staff/ NIL collective is holding back from HS recruiting a little because they know just how close we are and want to prioritize bringing in gameday ready players instead of 18 year olds....
I believe Hooker was the other coaches get.
Milton was Heupels

I’m telling y’all, I bet we get a LB, we’re too slow at the position and lack a difference maker there.
Most of those guys will be faster next year through decision making as they get comfortable with the defense.

Without looking at the backups though, another veteran blue chip LB makes sense.

It will be interesting to see who we lose, I'd imagine most wouldn't announce til season ends but with portal opening before playoffs gonna be interesting to see what happens.

Aside from that I agree with most our targets should be...
- OL / DL
- WR Playmaker
- TE Depth
- LB / S.

What seems to be lost on some is that the portal is a 2 way street. We can have some of our kids head elsewhere, too. Are we willing to part with some of our current WR's and committed kids should we go after guys like Brown and Concepcion? Gonna say it again....we need one helluva OL haul way more than another WR. I'd also like a couple more studly DL, too.
The way Heupel flipped our DB room this year was elite! Our whole DB group last year hit the portal and some wondered if something was wrong. Nope! Clearly, Heupel knew we were not good enough and replaced them. He will do that again at certain positions as needed. We may lose some other guys who didn’t see the field so they can get more playing time, but that’s what happens with elite teams.

We need LB the most.

We only average at that position. Need a difference maker

I gotta disagree here. Carter and Telander are very good. Jalen Smith looks very promising as well. Perry has made his fair share of plays when given the opportunity. Spillman was a 4 star this past cycle and has loads of talent too. Then we have Gass and Harmon as 4 stars coming in this cycle and potentially Perlotte too.

I would pass on Concepcion. He got most of his production in the first game against WCU. Take those stats away and he averaged 30 YPG. Staley I think will be better and the money can be spent elsewhere.

Because their QB situation is atrocious.

Concepcion is widely considered a future 1st round pick in 2026.

I mean, alright. Doesn't change the gist of my point which is that this coaching staff is elite at recognizing ready to play portal guys who won't cause a disturbance in the locker room. That seems to be a major priority in their evaluation of potential recruits/ transfers. I mean, you can have the #1 portal class if you pay every guy who is only in this for the money and see how far that team of "I gotta get mine" guys gets you... (see Ole Miss)

I don’t want barion brown. Been soaking in the Kensucky dysfunction listening to some of their pods while working on the honey do list and the consensus is things fell apart at uk because the culture was bad. Mincey, Deon Walker, and Barion Brown were all mentioned as being lazy and doing what they want.

For some reason, I kinda doubt we make a splash and grab some of these big name portal guys. I think we'll continue to get guys we've identified as a great fit and with multiple years. Gotta wonder if we want to introduce a high dollar ticket into the locker room especially if it's a one year guy. Nah. I'd be shocked if we got either the kid from NC St or Brown. Doubt we even pursue them.

Another huge plus is that, outside of super senior MK, all of these transfers are multiple year guys. Instead of looking for band-aids that have to be replaced yearly, they get guys who can play AND still have time to develop and grow within the system.

Well the decline in production kind of coincided with his QB getting his head bounced off the turf.
