Possible New Player for 2010- LSU Signee, OG Elliott Porter

hopefully this staff will change things but lot of Memphis kids have looked elsewhere rather than Knoxville over the years. Not all, but a lot.

Willie Henderson who we really wanted, wanted to stay there.

Malcolm Rawls ended up wanting to go back home after getting to Knoxville

its a long way for many...

Georgia and bamer are a long way too, I think the recruiting here needs to be better. Fulmer hated memphis (me too) and CLK only had one year but lost quite a few good prospects last year too.
We shoulda got Brandon Ivory and Keiwone Malone! Really coulda used Ivory!!

If we release Bryce and Nick wouldn't that give us 2 more spots?

no. they came in the 2009 class, not 2010 class. the 2010 recruiting class size is the issue. not the full roster size. plenty of room under the 85, no room under the 25..

This "25 rule" really hurts teams in situations like ours. It seems there should be some adjustment to this rule to allow a team which is down so many scholarships to remedy that. It is not like we are in this situation because of some impropriety... this is simply the university being victimized by coaching transitions.

happens to all teams for lots of reasons. there is always attrition, not all due to coaching changes. Be hard to allow for any one specific reason without allowing for all reasons...

the impropriety was losing which led to coaching change... when you lose and have to change, you should get penalized. we are realizing that just like we did back in 70s.

CDD has done a nice ob in off season filling out the roster as best as he can, but I think we are still down 10 scholarships which is really misleading because we've put a few walk on players on scholarship that probably would not be ordinarily. This is not normal attrition. I think the NCAA (and SEC in our case) could have a pretty simple equation that offered allowances for a program that is down 15 or so scholarships. I understand what you are saying, but this does not seem like a normal situation to me. 4 or 5 down is normal, but 10 - 15 is abnormal IMO.

No new news on loften. Tennessee is not pursuing Elliott porter.

Per Hubbs we are not pursuing Porter anymore...

Hopefully this is a great sign that John Brown is looking better!

I live close to and work in memphis. There are more UT fans than memphis fans here, especially when it comes to football. Lots of people are memphis basketball fans and UT football fans. So by FAR kids here consider UT home. Definetely way more than ole miss or arkansas or any other SEC teams that are closer.

Really? I have friends that live in Jackson and Lexington and a lot of them, their friends, and family went to Ole Miss... or if they stayed in-state chose UT-Martin.

Probably just and exception, by far UT football dominates, we are still in Tennessee so it is the home team. Ole Miss is even behind Memphis in football and a distant third to UT. Most kids like Memphis and/or UT! Football no doubt, and B-ball is gaining in UT's favor!
As far as adults, if you go to a bar and watch a UT/Ole Miss game it will be 90% UT easy!
Definetely has to be an exception in Jackson, once you get out of Memphis just a little, like where I live, its ALL UT!!!!!!!

Not recruiting Memphis hard is one of the worst mistakes any head coach of UT can make. Dooley really needs to make an effort to create a lot of attention there because of the natural talent that is produced. Ole Miss, MSU, and even Arkansas will always be lingering, but Memphis is a must for UT coaches. JMO

There is a reason Fulmer is not here anymore, and recruiting is one of the reasons.

Well crap would have loved to add him but maybe Brown magically got eligible.

How would you rank them in order of probability? Also, do you take Brown with two years of eligibility left or Porter with 4?

How's this:

Jackson
Loften
Brown
Dixon

???

Oversigning needs to stop. This kid committed to LSU over a year ago. He was nothing but loyal and this is how Miles treats him. Pathetic.

Brown has to pass around 18 hours and make a C or better in all the classes. That is difficult for the best of students. And Hubbs says there isn't much optimism around the complex.

It's really not THAT hard and would not be difficult at all for, "the best of students..."

Agreed I took 18 hours three different time and only made 2 B's the rest were A's. Maybe hard for him but I would say 60-70% of college students could do what he has to do to get in.

For a full-time student, I agree that 18 hrs is not that hard. For a student athlete, a bit more difficult. For a player like Brown who has a learning disability, it could be a tough pull.

Add infact that its summer classes...really really tough pull.

SHould we assume that CDD passes on Porter because he thinks two more of our guys are getting in?

certainly possible but I wouldn't assume that.

Could have talked to kid and didn't hit it off..

Could have reviewed film and decided wouldn't worth a ship.

Could have talked with him and heard too much of LSU and thought he comes here and wants to head back home in a week (I still think he stays there)

Not a safe assumption at all. Sounds to me like Jackson about only one with a 50-50 chance to get in.. others seem less than 50%
