Lane Kiffin is keeping the local sports media in the dark just as Mike Hamilton did during Lane's hiring process. Just because we're not hearing about certain coaching prospects doesn't mean that they're off the board. Chances are, the ones we're hearing all the noise about are just counter measures being launched to allow him to go about his business undisturbed by the local media. He's playing them like a fiddle just like Hamilton did, besides, they're missing half of their strings, how hard can it be. Other than the three obvious ones, Reaves, Monte, and O, who saw James Cregg or Jim Chaney coming before they were announced. Why shouldn't we expect him to go about his business of filling out the rest of the staff in the same manner.
Rumors are out there that CLK still has a big surprise of a hire yet to come and most believe that it isn't Gonzales (the big surprise). Why not Sylvester Croom? It was rumored that he was in town for a day to talk with Lane and then was quickly dismissed as a probable hire. This sounds reminiscent of Lane's first sighting in town and the subsequent dismissal of his probability for the likes of Butch Davis, John Gruden, Bill Cower, etc., all counter measures.
People are asking why Billy Gonzales would want to leave his WR position at Florida for the same job here. 1) more money 2) maybe he'd like to be a part of an offense where his wide receivers are more than just a decoy for a gimmick running attack most of the time.
3) maybe he'd like to get hooked back up with a college teammate of three years; Brian Schneider.
Maybe, the reason James Cregg was announced so early, other than he's an up and coming good young coach of OL, is a five year coaching and playing relationship with Schneider, a little extra bait can't hurt.
Maybe, one of the biggest reasons for hiring Chaney as OC was a lack of a major ego and his not having a problem with what Lane likes to do best, call plays. Darren Perry was dismissed before taking another job, rumored to just be looking around the NFL. Why so quickly? I hear those half-strung fiddles making beautiful music. I, for one, believe that we've only seen the tip if the iceberg. I'm dreaming big until we hear it from the front of Lane's mouth, not the side, which is where all of the counter measures are launched from.
