Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

we've gotten soft. when I was a kid in the 70s, post-game parking lot brawls were the norm. if you couldn't goad a visiting fan into a fight, you'd just take on other vols. I guess it was a bad time to be a wuss, but unlike now people were not getting killed over stupid stuff that could be settled with fists.

Are you suggesting the goalie was soft in this instance and should've confronted a number of opposing fans in a fistfight? Or was this just tongue in cheek trolling?

talking about fan on fan, not fan on players. unless, of course, the players show up in the parking lot to fight after the game, which is something I have seen happen at high school games and minor league baseball.

Didn’t even realize that Heung Min Son ended up winning the Golden Boot. Very impressive considering he didn’t even score once from a penalty. Kind of surprising he never seems to be linked with a move to a top tier club.

Shared it with Salah, but I wish the no pens would have gave it to him outright. Easily the more impressive feat between the two.

Phil Foden won Young Player of the Year again. Other nominees who had the same or more goal involvements (Foden had 14) and better statistics:

Mason Mount - 21
Bukayo Saka - 17
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 14

Yet they just give it to the same guy as last year who was on the best team in the league and still didn’t produce as much as 3 other candidates….

I actually thought that was the tiebreaker, but you’re right, they’ll just share it. If PK goals didn’t count, nobody was within five goals of him.

I know there is some sort of tiebreaker in the WC, either most goals from open play, or whoever played the fewest minutes.

Less than 24 hours after the season ended and Villa have already signed Boubacar Kamara. I’ll be interested to see who gets sold off now, but wasting no time getting the players Gerrard wants

I think you’re right about WC. I think golden glove has tie breaker rules attached to it too. Premiere League needs to follow suit.

St. Johnstone clinging to SPL safety by a nosehair. Crazy to think this club won a double last year and is now tied at the half in what is for them a relegation match.

Even that is no guarantee. Everton were top-10 spenders in all of Europe over the past 5-7 years and only avoided relegation, and almost certain subsequent financial calamity, by the skin of their teeth. You have to spend that money wisely.
United has been the largest spender over the past 4-5 seasons and they have regressed every year.

What’s his goal involvement per minutes played? Also, while all those guys are excellent, Foden is a different level. Reece James omission is pathetic too. He’s a better fullback than Trent.

I’m not going to do the math for Saka and TAA. I couldn’t find just EPL goal involvements per 90 so I did just Mount and Foden myself:

Formula- Goals and Assists / (Minutes played/90)

Foden = 14 / (2133 / 90) = 0.59 Goal Involvements per 90

Mount = 21 / (2365 / 90) = 0.80 Goal Involvements per 90

I honestly don’t believe that Foden is a different level than Mount. I think Fodens great, don’t get me wrong, but they are both great and are both about the same level. Mount at City will put up very similar numbers to Foden and Foden at Chelsea would as well.

My main problem with these awards is they are partly fan voted, and we don’t get to see what percentage are fan votes and what are experts panel votes. Maybe the expert panel slightly gave the edge to one player but the other player has way more fans and that pushes them over the total? We just don’t know.

Oh, and completely agree on Reece. He started to show it last year and put on a great performance in the champions league final, but he really showed his quality this year. Had the same amount of G/A as TAA... and that was while he was out almost 3 months with a slight hamstring tear. He played 1,000 less minutes. Also played multiple games at RCB instead of RWB.

TAA Goal involvement per 90 - 0.45
James Goal Involvement per 90 - 0.68

Look at it this way in all competitions. Foden had 14 goals and 11 assists in 3184 minutes. His team won the premier league and semi-finalist in champions league. Mount had 13 goals and 16 assists in 3784 minutes. That would put Foden ahead. Anyway, they are both awesome and deserving. City playing for a title did and should play a factor.

It’s a premier league only award, so none of that should matter. Even if you did factor in overall play we are talking .69 to .70. So basically neck and neck overall, but again, it’s a PL only award. I also disagree, not just in this case but all MVP awards in most sports, that championships should matter. But that’s a whole other debate. Agreed, they are both awesome though and I do like watching Foden play.
