Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

Another small gripe about Premier League Fantasy. Seeing as you only get a very limited number of transfers throughout the season, I feel like you shouldn’t be forced to use one of them to replace a player who leaves during the transfer window and literally no longer plays in the PL.

Maybe we should try a few different ones so going forward we know which one we like best.

Well, I gave up about 4 players to get Haaland and took the 3 cheapest possible players at their positions, made him a captain and had a 50 point day with 3 more players going tomorrow. Not a major move in the standings, but at least I'm not going backwards anymore

The bias comes in on things that aren’t reviewable typically. For example who gets the throw in? Who gets the goal kick or the corner? How much added time is put on? When does the whistle blow at the end of the game? Offsides calls that would lead to corners also. I’ve noticed those things distinctly go in favor of a few teams and namely the old guard. Most of these officials grew up fans of United and Liverpool. I’m gonna take my tinfoil hat off now.

Odd situation in the Brighton/Leicester game just now that got me thinking. Brighton equalized at 1-1 through an OG that was also a clear handball on the Leicester defender. So my question is, should the ref technically have disallowed goal and awarded Brighton a penalty instead? If you can’t score a conventional goal with your hand, why would you be allowed to score an OG? Ultimately justice was done, but I’m curious what the actual letter of the law in that case is.

I’ll see if I can find a video later. It was made when Liverpool was on their 40 something game streak without giving up a penalty in the box. The video was over a couple dozen scenarios when they SHOULD have, or at least it was 50/50, got a penalty. It was crazy that all of those were deemed not fouls.

Also, look at this graphic. I don’t think is updated with this years refs, think it’s last years, but point still stands. This is a map of where all PL referees were born. Over HALF were born in Manchester/Liverpool area. They probably all grew up as a fans of either United or Liverpool.

That’s pretty wild how not a single ref came from the greater London area.

It’s possible, but not necessarily true for all of them. Many of the older refs grew up in the era before the PL had become the all-encompassing giant that it is today. At that point, you couldn’t really see many games on TV, so you just went every weekend and watched the local club, regardless of what division they were in. So some may have much more localized allegiances with smaller clubs. For example, Mike Dean. He grew up somewhere in the Liverpool area, but is well known to be an avid Tranmere Rovers supporter.

But yes, crazy there’s not a single ref from London. Also, lol at the guy from Australia that they just stuck in the bottom right corner.

I mean, you would think the PL isn’t going to let a ref that is a known supporter of say, Liverpool for example, and then let them go referee a Liverpool game.. but I bet it does happen. The SEC has let this happen on multiple occasions.

But think about the influence around a referee like Dean. He may not be directly a Liverpool supporter but what about his non direct family? Is his uncle or cousin a Liverpool fan? Are his childhood friends Liverpool fans? The influence around him could still be really strong just being from the area.

I don’t think in the examples listed that would make him “cheat” for them.. just that bias can occur even when they aren’t conscious of it. Then again, good luck finding referees that don’t already have biases whether conscious or not. So hard thing to do but at the same time still incredibly weird how 11 out of 21 referees are from the area where the two clubs of the old guard with the most winning history are located.
