Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

Thanks for the info. Maybe they are a good team that will get me hooked on the sport. Never been a soccer fan, although I really would like to get into it.

Do you live in a big city?

If you enjoy how the Dodgers and Lakers are ran, then you will enjoy Chelsea. This season they have spent almost as much money on new players as another 1 of the rich Big 6 clubs have in the last 10 transfer windows. They also have signed more new players than they have wins I believe. If you like new and shiny toys, Chelsea is the way to go.

I follow Brighton in the PL. They are a team that you don’t follow because of a certain player. As soon as a player does well, 1 of the big 6 sweep in and grab them. They are fun to watch, but as others have stated, winning the league is usually reserved for a small handful.

It's actually going to be interesting to see if the rest of the PL and Europe look at the way Boehly is going about the transfer market and emulate it, or just stick with the current status quo. When I say that, I don't mean net spend and all that, but by how he is going about the contracts. Everyone on twitter is up in arms about FFP and Chelsea, but they don't want to do the research on why Chelsea is able to make it work. Longer contracts, spread out fees and amortizations ... all keeps you well within FFP regulations but lets you still spend the upfront fees needed to get the signatures of top, expensive players. If you look at Mudryk, who Chelsea just hijacked from Arsenal this weekend, it was close to a 100M fee but the payment structure they worked out along with Mudryk signing a 7.5 year contract, has actually kept it within very favorable FFP restrictions. I won't pretend to know just how it all works with fee structure and amortizations, but longer contracts like this aren't as normal in soccer as they are American sports, especially Baseball where Boehly comes from. I will say it's really important to only do these long contracts with young players who you feel like are "can't miss" prospects (we all know there's no such thing as truly cant miss though). It is also important to realize that it opens you up for issues later on if the player does underperform and you're stuck with a long contract.. but Boehly has also been insistent on the not so lavish weekly wages that Roman was handing out so it's not quite as detrimental as it was.

It'll be an interesting case study though and something in 3 years or so time we look back on and go "that was smart", or "welcome to the mess you've created, Boehly."

And lost last week to a team who’s entire starting XI cost less than just Chelsea’s keeper, lol.

In fairness, Chelsea have a ton of injuries right now, and Kepa may be the worst, most overpriced transfer I can ever recall.
Terrible transfer. A case study in terrible transfers, actually. We've been trying to offload him for 3 transfer windows now, and he wants to leave to get consistent playing time, but no one will take his wages.

I take it that there are no salary caps
No salary caps in the Premiere League. Some leagues do have a loose cap, I believe La Liga does. There are Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations that UEFA uses that all of the major European leagues are subject to, but that's more to do with transfer wages and book keeping within the organizations to make sure they aren't wildly spending more than they are making in revenue. FFP has nothing to do with a players wages though.

But FFP is such a joke and easy to get around. Also, it’s had the reverse effect as was originally intended. Since you’re technically supposed to live within your means revenue wise, it’s basically had the effect of allowing the Top 6-7 at the time who already had massive revenues to play with when it was instituted to permanently lock the door behind them. Now there’s no hope of a team like Leicester permanently crashing their party.

Obviously the Newcastle situation is still TBD, but at this point we’re running out of Middle Eastern countries left to buy a club and offer unlimited funding.

Agreed, FFP has no teeth. All bark, little bite. I know they say they are revamping it to make it have more teeth but most don’t think it will do much. Unless they set hard salary caps and hard transfer limits, which won’t happen, there will always be a way around FFP with creative accounting.

Brighton, Fulham, Brentford are all awesome. Exciting to watch and without the big budget.

I just became a fan of Premier League back in 2016. The team was picked for me because of a girlfriend from London who was a big fan. No longer with that girl but still a huge fan. Growing up I was always a fan of the Vols where I grew up and Detroit teams because I was born in Michigan. But I can tell you my love for my Premier League team is equal now to those. I had tried in the past to start following a team after every World Cup but nothing ever stuck. Remember players and coaches come and go, you will find a strong connection to the other supporters of your club. Picking Chelsea because you are a fan of Pulisic is a good enough reason as any to get you started.

I would recommend finding a Chelsea supporters group close to you, they are a lot of fun.

Also I love some of the fan channels on YouTube, those are great to immerse yourself with fans overseas. I can get you started with some suggestions. But I bet some of the Chelsea supporters here know the best ones.

Maybe you want to see which are the most popular supporters clubs in your area or a particular venue you like and go with that team. Many different teams came up when I googled “premier league supporter clubs los angeles”

Good post. Surprising coming from an Arsenal fan.

Congrats on the double.

Thought maybe he would go for Liverpool but seems he wants United. All of the United fans in the comments are saying “no thanks we want Saudi money” 😂

Also, Glazers apparently want 5 Billion for the sale.

The Spurs fan who kicked Aaron Ramsdale was 35 years old?!?!? I swear when I watched it he looked like a kid. Or maybe I just assumed no grown man in their 30’s could possibly do something so stupid.
