Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

Bad day for the PL in general, but at United, the rot goes deep. TenHag and half the leadership should be fired for going all in on Onana and the way DeGea was handled.

Anyone else think it’s weird that even 4 days later the bad call against Liverpool is front page news. We’ve all seen worse calls that have cost teams 3 points much less 1.
Taking my LFC fandom out of the mix, this isn't just a bad call or a call that was open to interpretation. It undermines the legitimacy of VAR as a system. It is the most colossal error since they implemented it 4 years ago.

As others have said, this is almost certainly VAR’s lowest point, so I’m not surprised it’s stayed in the headlines. Also there’s no midweek PL games, so we have to wait till Saturday for the next inevitable VAR calamity to knock this one out of the news.

Liverpool are the biggest bunch of whingers around, that’s why. Having access to the audio probably makes things worse, since you can see the level of screw up and nitpick it, but there have been just as bad, if not worse, screw ups since VAR and especially just a few years ago when there was no VAR. It’s a bad look for VAR for sure, but the level of indignation by LFC and amount of coverage is silly. It was about equal level of a bad call (overall) as the lack of foul and PK for Wolves in the first game where Onana clearly fouled.

Except in your analogy fouls/cards are open to interpretation, much like me fuming about Jones getting sent off in the game for his spikes slipping off the ball. I have to accept that there will never be a clear way to define fouls like that, even with VAR review. It ultimately is up to the interpretation of the head official and VAR crew whether we like it or not (officials having consistency in these scenarios is another debate entirely).

Diaz's disallowed goal is literally a black and white issue. Either he's offsides, or he isn't, and we have technology in place to determine it exactly. It is colossal incompetence to get that call wrong in the manner in which they did, and undermines the current VAR review system. I just don't see how you can arrive at the conclusion that it isn't a big story and is just LFC fans whining. If you don't believe me as an LFC fan, that's fine, but look around this thread as well as former EPL players and pundits (many of whom played for rivals of Liverpool) to see what they have to say.

Fair that there is quantifiable evidence that a mistake was made.
The point is that human error has been around for as long as humans. It sucks. Move on. There has been less coverage and outrage at the ref kicking the ball in the Florida game, which would be super kind to call human error.

Edit: Also, since some want to use this to get rid of VAR; the call on the field was offside. Without VAR, we end up at the same result.

In one game, there were two absolutely embarrassing calls that ended the tie between Liverpool and City (the centurion year). Mo Salah was offside for the first goal. It was allowed to stand.

Later, Sane was ruled offside for a good goal. The Sane disallowed goal is far worse than Luis Dias's and on a much bigger stage. City lost 3-0 when it should've been 2-1.

The next game Allison punched the ball and it bounced off Milner back to Sane who hit it in. It was a legal goal ruled out because the official "thought" the ball was played by a City player to Sane.

That goal would've put city up 2-0 at home at halftime. The first game should've been 2-1. This means City would've had a 3-2 aggregate score lead at home with Liverpool chasing an away goal to send to extra time. Instead, City was down 3-1 on aggregate and forced to open up and get hit on the counter. Perhaps cost City the quadruple that year. I'm still very bitter because I believe that was the greatest team City has ever had.

VAR was not in place during these games, so I don't understand the point you're trying to make.

History of VAR

The point is bad calls happen. VAR is going nowhere.

I don't believe it should, and never stated it should. But it's clear that changes need to be made for something like this to not happen again. They literally screwed up one of the simplest calls an official can make. Look at the offsides lines, determine it isn't offsides by using your eyeballs (the computer did the hard part of this for you), and then using your words to convey that to the onfield official. The audio transcript is laughable and sounds like a bad game of telephone from middle schoolers. Even given your City fandom, I don't see how that isn't apparent. It doesn't matter which club it happened to, it's an embarrassment for one of the top leagues in the world. Period.

I agree it sucks, and this was very poor. Bad decisions will happen and it cost you a point. I'm just saying way worse decisions occurred prior to VAR including game fixing.
