Presidential Debate #1 Game Thread

Just wondering; why do you think the Democratic controlled House and Senate have a lower approval rating than the President?

Why do you think the Republicans got their :shaking2: handed to them in the mid year elections two years ago?

I'm in favor of throwing out all the incumbents from both parties. I'm not a democrat regardless of what people in here may think. But I'm not going to say I wasn't very impressed by Obama's responses and how prepared and articulate he was.

It would be hard for me to name anyone in Congress who is worse at debate then McCain. I can't remember one paragraph of his that was concise, articulate, and on point. Where Obama was all night. I kept listening to McCain thinking when is he going to address directly the question poised? Why does he keep going on these irrelevant tangents? Obama was like he knew the questions before the debate and spent the last 2 weeks preparing his answers.

Thank you Ms. Pelosi!

Because they forgot the promises they made that got them elected (lower taxes and smaller government). They spent money like drunken sailors and deserved to be thrown out on their :shaking2:

Now answer my question. Why do you think the Democratic controlled House and Senate have a lower approval rating than the President?

OK...I have a serious question. Why is it that the republicans can't help themselves from making some play on Obama's name? What is the driving force behind this....it seems that I never see it happen the other way around. Is it kind of like a club with secret passwords or something? How strict are the admission requirements?

Perhaps if you tell me which ones you are referring to, I can respond.

Which republicans or which names?

I just mean it seems like we've heard a ton of plays on Obama's name for months...and even in serious discussions, instead of calling him Obama..it becomes Obamessiah or gObama. Recently, it's become O-blame-a. I overlook joevol's exclusive use of "hussein obama" instead of at least "barack hussein obama" since it is at least PART of the guy's name.....though I don't like it that much. I'm not advocating people making fun of McCain's name, but it's just weird that a lot (not all, of course) of anti-BHO folks make some play on his name practically every time they mention him.

I just wonder if you are painting republicans with a broad stroke for the actions of a few on the fringe.

To be fair, I should have said some republicans (particularly on this board). Absolutely, can't disagree there. However, the point should stand with that amendment .... there appears to be a concerted effort by many to consistently make plays on the guys name. I'll admit that the Obamamessiah stuff was funny when everyone was swooning over the guy in Germany...but that was then, and yet it continues, with new and less interesting names. My question is, seriously, why do so many tend to do this....particularly when I can't even think of an instance of it being reciprocated.

The initial polls suggest most think Obama won the debate tonight.

Marc Ambinder (September 26, 2008) - CBS News / Knowledge Network Undecideds Give Debate To Obama

40% of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Barack Obama was the winner. 22% thought John McCain won. 38% saw it as a draw.

68% of these voters think Obama would make the right decision about the economy. 41% think McCain would.

49% of these voters think Obama would make the right decisions about Iraq. 55% think

Two focus groups, one by GOP pollster Frank Luntz and another by Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg, both declare Obama the winner. Independents in the MediaCurves focus group "gave the debate to Obama 61-39. They also think he won every individual segment. Republicans gave the debate to McCain 90-10, Democrats to Obama 93-7."

I had to laugh when Obama said something along the lines of "I am for nuclear waste..."

....go nuclear waste!! I assume he meant proper handling or something like that, but that's not exactly the place where you want to leave out part of your sentence.

I also agree with a lot of the post-debate coverage that says both guys flopped on the bailout issue...but I think that it had to happen. We don't need a lot of presidential politics injected into the issue right now - it would just make it that much harder to reach a decision.

BMFPV - enjoy the debate....or did you catch much of it? I won't say I enjoyed it, but it wasn't bad.

Edit: I don't know what it is about McCain...I just generally like a lot of his ideas/approaches. The charisma issue is pretty stark when you throw him up there against Obama...but McCain had a few moments tonight that reminded me why I like him. Obama had some good moments too, though.

didn't see it. Have a large festival in town and went there. Watched a bit of play by play on here from my cell phone.

It's more entertaining to read the comments.

These polls hold ZERO water. Every single news agency is biased. Including Fox who had McCain winning with an 80+% margin. The problem is that there are many dem biased agency compared to the repub biased one.

Don't underestimate that when it comes to the overall public perception of who won. When every major news outlet outside of Fox is claiming an Obama victory tomorrow, Obama becomes the de facto winner of the debate.

Not exactly . . . The CNN poll was a scientific sampling. The Fox poll was a text message poll. Hence the skewed results.

scientific sampling makes it sound much more official than it really is. Polls are essentially garbage.

Actually, the scientific poll from CNN was much closer than the web results posted earlier in this thread.. however, the numbers still show Obama winning the debate overall, on the economy and on Iraq:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/27/debate.poll/index.html

Who Did the Best Job In the Debate?

Obama 51%
McCain 38%

Who Would Better Handle Economy?
Obama 58%
McCain 37%

Who Would Better Handle Iraq?
Obama 52%
McCain 47%

This idea that Obama would handle the economy better blows me away. It really illustrates the ignorance in this country. I can't connect the dots between higher taxes and a better economy.

Ignorance cuts both ways, no? I was shocked Bush won re-election in 2004 after it was obvious (to me) that Iraq was a sham. Voters often make decisions on who runs the best campaign, not necessarily who is most qualified. Based on McCain's campaign so far, I don't think he's going to win. Surely, Obama won't be as bad as Bush?
