Presidential Debate #1 Game Thread

If McCain can't win a debate with Obama on foreign policy, he's doesn't have a lot of hope of winning the others.

I thought McCain looked bad, he didn't seem to address the question directly, his answers seemed muddled, he seemed more interested in bringing up some irrelevant point to slight Obama then directly responding to some very basic, expected questions on foreign policy. He didn't look presidential at all.

Obama looked much better then he did in the democratic debates, smooth, polished, articulate, well-spoken, intelligent, thoughtful in a word presidential.

He didn't dominate him anywhere. The fact that McCain didn't knock this debate out of the park is going to hurt him.

Besides, even if he had smoked him on foreign policy, that isn't the big issue in this election.

i agree foreign policy isn't the big issue, but it points out how inexperience he is on foreign policy and liberal he is on economic policy.

I think Democrats are happy that Obama looked competent in a foreign policy debate. I think Republicans are happy that McCain didn't look like Bob Dole.

sure thing buddy.

So you guys really think McCain won on Iraq? I thought Obama was outstanding when it came to that.

You do know that McCain was the old white guy on the left of the stage don't you? Sounds like you have them confused.

I don't think either of them really won on Iraq . . . but a tie on this issue is probably a plus for Obama.

Damn, didn't get a chance to watch the debate. Went to the South-Doyle - Gibbs game.

So, can someone give me the summary of the debate in clifnotes.

I think Borger said it pretty well

"real challenge" for Obama, "he had some trouble on the surge answer...but I think if John McCain is supposed to be head and shoulders above Obama on foreign policy, Obama held his own."

obama is extremely ignorant concerning the whole war on terror in general. his strategery will cause us to be back in iraq in 8-10 years. he's extremely ignorant.

The only time Obama really looked "bad" is on Iran and Russia. I think McCain definitely got the better of him there.

A lot of pundits are also making a lot out of the fact that McCain kept saying "You don't understand" and Obama kept saying "John is right".

No one watching that debate with an open mind is going to thik McCain was a better speaker, was the more prepared debater, more articulate. Compared to Obama he looked like was in a high school debate.

If you like McCain, then he won.
If you like Obama, then he won
If you are in the middle then Round 1 a draw; Round 2, slight edge to McCain.

Notice you did not say anything about Obama having better ideas. A frequent omission from his supporters.

oklavol, you must love shiny toys. you need to listen to the substance of what they were saying. it was obvious that hussein obama is very ignorant when it comes to foreign policy. retreat and surrender will not bode well 8-10 year from now. that's what you libs just don't understand.

Obama was better on the economy - I think McCain was better on the rest - in particular showing the difference between experience and idealistic views of foreign affairs

I don't expect her to praise Obama, but there is no way that McCain's adviser that was just interviewed on CNN believed a word she spouted.

mccain should have attacked obama and the dems that it was their fault for blocking oversight for fanny and freddie. i was hoping he would have but he didn't. he could have really put obama in a corner if he did that.
