Pruitt on Banks at linebacker: 'I think he could play this week.'

I mean doesnt it take time to learn your assignments and the defensive calls? Dont get me wrong I would LOVE to see him at MLB Saturday
Im sure there are ways to simplify if at first. I like it. My biggest worry at this point would be going against a multi threat offense with a good TE or slot reciever.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Should be a good move long term for the team and player. Just don't buy that he can jump straight in and make an impact.

Would rather not hear complaints about busted assignments if he does play LB this week.

If Banks is OK with it is alright by me but I am a no vote otherwise...but if he is happy with it and wants it then go for it...but right now I am a no vote.
I think the kid only gets better as a RB...

I also understand the need for speed and the injury situation and trying to salvage the season to be bowl eligible..
The fact is that we are mid-season and Pruitt still talks about the busted assignments with the players that have been on D since the start of the season and now your trying this...
You dont get to vote, that's not how this works.

I'm gonna guess his role will be pretty simple this week. If given snaps.
Passing downs. Go get the QB.
Short yardage. Go hit the RB.

I dont think Pruitt throws him out there and expects him to take call adjustments, cover TEs and RBs out of the backfield and do much thinking yet. That would remove what's probably his biggest asset right now. Aggression.

I'm all for getting our best players on the field but I hope this isn't a permanent move. Other than the fumbles, I loved the way this kid runs the ball.

Banks is only 211 pounds. A bit small for an inside linebacker taking on lineman 300 pounds plus. Probably will be used initially in obvious passing situations as a blitzer.

If you think Banks is only 211 you are silly. He is bigger than half our Linebackers.

Edit: But you’re right he is going to have so much trouble with 300 lb lineman it’s not like he never ran through them or those 230+ lb Linebackers.... you know, when he was running the ball.....

I believe Banks has abilities that Jumper could only dream about, but if you're referring to knowledge then I agree. If he is used by Pruitt it will be as an unguided missile, light it and stand aside.

Banks may be the next JRM, but he won't look like it this weekend, or the next.

Seems like a big jump so quickly. Don't LB's also have to do some coverage? Or would he just be used as a spy?

I waiting to see how this goes.... MLB in this defense is the captain. He lines up the DL, calls the play and has awareness of the defense from the front line to the secondary....... this will surely be interesting IF IT HAPPENS.

Uhh.... Bituli is the guy who has been controlling the D. So as long as he is out there, he is still the guy lining up the people.

I would love for banks to step in and be the next al wilson or tyrone hines but like awaitingawin says "its not that simple." One step in the wrong direction, one wrong read and touchdown! for the bad guys.

Pruitt is the coach and knows alot more about the game than I do but it sounds desperate at best. I hope it works but sure seems like a reach in one week of practice.

Nothing desperate about it.
His LBs are average. He thinks could be better.

Very similar tenacity and athleticism to Mack Wilson from Bama

I think you'll see him in kickoff coverage (if he wasn't already) and also in a few blitz packages where his only job is to go get the QB. Highly doubt they put him in coverage this week.

2/3 of the yards he has gained this year were against ETSU and UTEP. He has struggled holding on to the ball. He is athletic and has a high motor. This could be a great move for Banks, UT and Banks’ future as a football player.

So, if you are a LB that doesn’t do things the right way, you may get replaced by a RB that wants to do things the right way, even if it’s at a new position. Pruitt isn’t just coaching for this season, he is coaching for the future. I like it.

. UT vs. Bama 2018 game

Just watch the video from 13:06 thru 13:12 when Bama scores their 2nd TD and you'll see why CJP says that Banks could play LB for us this weekend. And it really is that simple....

#19 is UNBLOCKED....UNBLOCKED....on the goal line and at one point actually begins to run away from the play....he truly could've blown up this play from the beginning for a 3-4 yard loss....or even forced a turnover. Jacobs #8 Bama screws up his steps before the handoff--he and Tua look like the keystone cops out there on this one play...and we don't make 'em pay.

#34--is the WORST LB I've ever seen on the field for the Vols--EVER....all the way back to 1979 when I began to watch 'em.
It's on the goal line...he is the strong-side LB and his FIRST responsibility is to step up and fill that 8 foot hole that opens right in front of him...but he just stands there .....so while #19 has NO CLUE what to do...#34 just stands there and waits to get blocked....

Here are two guys on defense who obviously DO NOT know how to do it RIGHT...they don't even know WHAT to do....

This is just one small example of how far our talent has fallen at LB....Our OLB and ILB in days of old would've blown this play up way back there around the 5 yard line....because they had an ATTACK mentality.... You can't lay this one on CJP....you learn in Junior High School how to fill this hole...

And once again.....#19 is NEVER TOUCHED on the play.....and what the he(& was he thinking????

And #14 had a pathetic game against BAMA, too. We'll NEVER be competitive again in the SEC until we recruit over every LB on this team--and that does include Bituli.

Never met a pile he wouldn't run directly into, at linebacker that's actually a good thing. Someone let CJP know I'm on board with the move...

Following some other threads, it appears that Jeremy asked to go in at MLB at one point so I'm not concerned that he will resent it.
He's too valuable to be standing on the sidelines and MLB is the perfect spot for him, IMHO.
From there, it's not about "learning schemes and keys" as much as it is being in on EVERY tackle.
GO TO THE BALL...Agile, Mobile, Hostile.
In my opinion...Jeremy Banks is the perfect man for that assignment.

Yeah, that's all he did was run into piles. That's why everyone was saying he should be the number two till he started fumbling. Good grief.
