Question for those who follow recruiting more than I do

My family and I are still fairly new to Tennessee and I hope to take my wife to the Oregon game this fall. I feel it is a must win for us this year--it will really set the tone I think.

Anyways, I had a question about the 2 star TE recruit. Since he's a JC, would he count against this year's class or against a previous class?

Welcome to VN! :hi:

He will count against 2011 class.

so much fail in this post. i'll try to correct it all.

I just read back through the threads. We were 7th. we fell to 12th after Kiffin left. sorry.

That whole 2nd paragraph is just laughable. We got 2 commits at the Army game. Both of them 4stars and in the Rivals250. Ahmad Dixon and Brandon Willis.

Absolutely NONE of this was fed to me from some PR machine. Here is what I know as 100% FACT:

- Ambles and Taylor were not bumped up in stars until after Kiffin left.

- Nickell Robey, Christian Jones, Shon Coleman, and Demar Dorsey were Vol silents

- Chaz Green was all Vol. the Gators gave up hope.

- John Cullen had been calling the Vols as his leader for 6 months

- Kyle Prater was visiting UT the weekend that Kiffin was hired. And at the UT-Kansas bball game, Kiffin was confident Prater was gonna be a Vol.

would we signed all of them? who knows. but they were Vols on January 11th (except Prater). fact.

I have only 2 things to speculate about in this post. 1) DaRick would be a Vol no matter who the coach was as long as Nance had an offer. 2) Damien Robinson, Eddrick Loften, Justin Hunter, and Dave Clark were Vols whenever Kiffin would have wanted them.

Now you start adding up these Rivals points and let me know where that takes you. Apparently people don't realize what Kiffin really had in store for NSD.

LV.. I have always enjoyed and respected your post even when some other board member didn't exactly agree, but there are quite a few "what ifs" in that post.. Not bashing in any way I'm just saying...

Should have beaten UCLA. I lay that squarely on the coaching staff. Ole Miss and VT made us look like a JV team.

:lolabove: Amen Lex... I would almost say VT made us look like a high school team.. It was like our coaches had never coached and the game plan had been faxed to VT 2 weeks before the game...You could tell CFB was loving rubbing it in Kitten face too.. He took Yaw Yaw and the Kittens to the wood shed....

It didn't help that Crompton went into frozen mode and kept staring down his receivers. It was evident from the stands much less the field.

Terrible calling..agreed...and one of two embarrasing moments for the Vols that clearly stand out in my mind in '09...the other being the missed kicks in the Bama game.

I agree in the respect that the Oregon game could set the tone. They are a better team. Neyland will be rocking. Beat Oregon, and maybe 7-8 wins is plausible. Don't beat Oregon, and maybe the players lose confidence and it goes downhill. Should be interesting.

i agree with you 100% man. great post. the Oregon game will be a huge momentum game. i really think which ever way that game swings the reason of the season will be affected by it. it would do wonders for our confidence coming into the FLA game the following week...

We aren't going to beat Florida no matter what happens. But you beat Oregon, and you can set the tone to maybe beat UGA, LSU, or USCe.

There is no such thing as fair playing ground when Kif and Org are involved! In 2 or 3 years the NCAA would have come calling like they have at USC!

2 or 3 years? They were here before a year iirc.

I remember vividly that just before kiffin left, our recruiting class was projected to be around #7 ranked, as LV said. Based on recruiting reports, I was fully expecting that by NSD we would have a class that would be ranked #3, give or take a spot. We were strongly in the lead for many top recruits, who were lapping up the kool-aid that kiffin was giving them. He was telling all of them whatever he thought they wanted to hear, and promising each of them the moon -- and they were buying into it lock stock and barrel.

For that reason, kiffin and orgeron were master recruiters, but sooner or later I think it would have caught up with them, and with UT and the end result would not have been pretty. I was a big time kiffin supporter at the time because I was drinking the same kool-aid. Personally, I am very thankful that he left -- he was not doing anything for UT, he was doing it all for kiffin and I was too blind to see it. Thankfully, he is no longer our problem.

Coach Dooley is now our coach. Although he was not my first choice, he has won me over by the way he finished out our class for 2010, and even more by the way he has handled recruiting for this year's class. Frankly, given our recent history (both on and off the field) I am pleasantly surprised at how well he has done thus far.

I would be amazed if he were able to draw in many 4 and 5 star players until they see what kind of product he puts on the field and how well he does with what he has. These kids want to know if Dooley can coach and only seeing us play this year can tell them that. If they see that we are developing our players and are both a competitive team on the field and a class act off the field, he will be able to close recruiting with a highly ranked class.

Saban is the best recruiter. He just has a mystique about him that no one else has.

But Kiffin and Orgeron would dominate anyone on that list on a fair playing ground. Meyer and Shannon have recruits handed to them. Gran is solid in one corner, of one state. Butch is a top 5 or so recruiter. He is the real deal. Richt is God awful.

What CLK and CEO were gonna pull on NSD here was gonna be sick. We woulda had the #2 class, not a doubt in my mind. Then they pulled the #1 class at USC in 2 weeks.

With all due respect, how do you figure that it was going to be the #2 class. The addition of Hunter, Da'rick, and Stone more than makes up for the loss of Willis and Ambles. I hated missing out on Dixon (Ahmad), but even that wouldnt have put us ahead of Texas. We would have had to sweep Chaz Green, Christian Jones and Lemonier, just to have a 3-4 class. I have nothing but respect for Kiff and Orgeron as recruiters, but I would rather have the 3 we gained than the two we lost.

Kiffin gave our fanbase a charge that was needed but we had a very dangerous pair in charge. They were part of the mess at USC and it is fitting that they have to serve the punishment. That will not hurt their chances with the thugs that they are willing to sign but most players with any kind of ethics will not be able to ignore their record.

The Memphis kid that went to GA was a perfect example of how they can screw up a good opportunity if a parent or grandparent is offering the player advice on the staff. That lady saw through the mirage. We are 100% better off for the long term with our current staff! GBO!

if u will think back kiffin couldnt get the ball rolling on recruiting until the season was going and that's when he started the "look how much playing time our freshmen get! everyone should come to us and you will get alot of playin time too!" gig.

Kiffin hit his stride in Late July/August.

By the time the season started, he already had 5 4star commits: Jacques, Ambles, Copeland, Jones, and Meline.

He also had 4 future 4stars committed: Milton, Taylor, Brown, and Irvin.

So by the time the season started, he already had 9 4star commits. Dooley is pretty much on pace with Kiffin right now, but it's gonna be hard to keep up in about 3 weeks.

i never said we would beat them, but we will not get blown out by them. it is gonna be brantley's first road game and if we get a w vs oregon we will have a lot of momentum heading into a game that fla thinks they have on lock down...

yes Martin is a Vol. look for his commitment today.

top 15. i'll say 12th.

If we get Martin, we'll have:

Randolph
Martin
Harris
Posey
Smith
Power
Worley

How many of those do you think have 4 stars on NSD?

I'd guess Martin, Smith, Posey, and maybe Randolph.

Probably won't get to 9, but I can see us having 6-8 NSD 4-stars by September 1

At least 3 imo. I don't think Worley and Harris will move but Martin and Smith will be 4stars. Randolph, Posey, and Power all have a legit shot.

so called "high-character"

Dooley's recruiting situation is a little different this year because of roster attrition and the lack of leadership (I love our leaders - just not as many standouts as I hope to have again in the future). I think it is much more important that his FIRST class have character and leadership abilities. This will make a huge difference when molding the young men in future classes that have not had as much direction in their life.

Outlier talent - ie. 5* freaks of nature - are going to have the skill as soon as they make the field. But the level they will reach and the team will reach will depend a lot on the senior leadership.

I think Dooley knows this, and I think it is why character is a bigger emphasis for us this year.
