Question for those who follow recruiting more than I do

Also, classes full of o-line will never have the star power that a bunch of skill position players. I still think a top ten class is certainly reasonable. Beating UGA and one out of Oregon, LSU, UF, or Bama would go a long way.

There is no such thing as fair playing ground when Kif and Org are involved! In 2 or 3 years the NCAA would have come calling like they have at USC!

right cause they came after USC b/c Kiffin and Orgeron were making the payments to Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo....and then they were the ones who completely lied about it to the NCAA :ermm:

well they WERE coaching there during that time?

I was targeting that more towards the contingent that thinks that the NCAA came down so heavy on USC because "they finally caught Kiffin right where they wanted; in a place where they could drop the hammer on him"

But the reason USC's punishment was so heavy was because: Reggie Bush was getting paid (not was paid by a booster to come, but was being paid for once he got there), OJ Mayo was too, the head coach (Carroll is the only coach referred to in the report) knew about it but did nothing to report or stop it, and while the basketball team admitted what happened and punished themselves, the football team instead continued to lie to the NCAA directly before and during the investigation and - though they knew what happened - insisted nothing happened. Those lies and the lack of personal responsibility for dealing with their actions was why the NCAA came down so hard on USC in football (yet not in basketball, who imposed a 1 year tourney ban and vacated wins)

Even with Kiffin here, we weren't going to get anything near that harsh unless we all were breaking the rules that badly and the university decided the best way to deal with it was to unite and lie to the NCAA about it - pretty much what USC did...but that's almost beside the point

....and no, I'm not supporting Kiffin; I have to say this or the first response will be "Kiffin-lover" :ermm:
but USC's mess really isn't because of Lane, it's because of the university's actions as a whole

Kiffin hit his stride in Late July/August.

By the time the season started, he already had 5 4star commits: Jacques, Ambles, Copeland, Jones, and Meline.

He also had 4 future 4stars committed: Milton, Taylor, Brown, and Irvin.

So by the time the season started, he already had 9 4star commits. Dooley is pretty much on pace with Kiffin right now, but it's gonna be hard to keep up in about 3 weeks.

meline was after bray, in september - not before the season

Up until the Ole miss game, I was taking pride in the fact that noone had beat us badly all year. Little did I know. We would have been ranked if we had won that game too.

It didn't help that Crompton went into frozen mode and kept staring down his receivers. It was evident from the stands much less the field.

Terrible calling..agreed...and one of two embarrasing moments for the Vols that clearly stand out in my mind in '09...the other being the missed kicks in the Bama game.

so called "high-character"

Dooley's recruiting situation is a little different this year because of roster attrition and the lack of leadership (I love our leaders - just not as many standouts as I hope to have again in the future). I think it is much more important that his FIRST class have character and leadership abilities. This will make a huge difference when molding the young men in future classes that have not had as much direction in their life.

Outlier talent - ie. 5* freaks of nature - are going to have the skill as soon as they make the field. But the level they will reach and the team will reach will depend a lot on the senior leadership.

I think Dooley knows this, and I think it is why character is a bigger emphasis for us this year.

good post man. i agree with you 100%
