Rally to Restore Sanity

Very good thread because, obviously, whoever draws the biggest crowd is therefore correct.

Uuuuh, Yea that's exactly what I said.

I think the Left is still saying Beck drew about 10K. So a normal day of the kickball tournaments on the Mall will beat that total.
I haven't heard anyone say 10,000. I think the ~87,000 number provided by the independent company is right on the money.

I lived up there long enough to see plenty of events. That number is definitely off the mark. I'm no Beck fan by any means but 87K is way off.

I've seen no evidence to support that claim.

Even the Metro numbers suggest that 87,000 is very close. Considerably closer than the 200-500k numbers some people want to throw around.

There were 200,000 extra rides on that day, compared to the same day last year. A "ride" is one way. That is 100,000 round trips. I understand there was at least one other rally going on the same day, as well.

what about the people who didn't take the metro? your evidence seems to prove it was well north of 87K.

I can tell you that most tourists coming into DC do not set foot on the Metro. Most of those people came up on buses and arrived there in buses. So if a large majority of those people were not on the Metro and the Metro number is 100K? I wouldn't go too far with that but I assure you that you cannot base the number solely on a public transportation number.

What other rally? Sharptons? I heard it was a massive rally.

Have you ever been? Guessing not. You practically have to take it.

I took the metro and taxis when I was in DC last summer. You also don't factor in the amount of people who chose not to go to that area that day because of the crowDs.

This is simply false.

:p Which did you take to the mall?
Disagree. You can walk all over that part of the city, and people typically do at those kind of rallies as part of the ritual.
Ah! Nice! So there was a 200-400 thousand person march as well? I wonder why there are no pictures of something like that. Odd.

Believe it if you want. It is true. most people who come in large numbers to events or heavy tourist season will be seen entering and leaving a bus rather than descending into a Metro station. This is a fact. Metro has done field canvas polling and came to the same conclusion. Are you calling them a liar?

As for accessing the Mall by Metro there are several stations to choose from.

So we are at ~100,000 on the metro.

How many people do you suppose bussed and walked?

Think 400,000 bussed to the mall early that morning?

I suppose you could be right.

I have a feeling Beck is light years away claiming 500,000. It was also a lot closer to 100,000 than 200,000. An independent company measured the crowd, and that isn't good enough. So I know this will never get anywhere.

Well for one thing I never claimed 500K. So first off I'm not sure why you're coming to me with that. I just said 87K is definitely off. You are the one who said 100K on the Metro. I've seen enough pictures and have been to or heard numbers from other events to know the 87K figure is off. I would love to know more about this independent company and how they came to their conclusion.

Oprah appears to be promoting it among her followers. She'll probably pay for buses and planes.

I saw that organizers were expecting 25,000. (On an article comment, but still, it's a number :p )

Article comment false. What a shock.

Jon Stewart's 'Rally to Restore Sanity' already outpacing Glenn Beck's rally - National Political Buzz | Examiner.com

So far all indicators point to Stewart's producing a larger following than Beck's.

After less than one week, the Facebook page for Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity" already has 93,000 RSVP's. Now, many who have pledged to attend will undoubtedly not actually be there for various reasons, but another 48,000 say they might attend. In addition, the numbers above do not include the 37,000 who say they will attend Stephen Colbert's "March to Keep Fear Alive," scheduled at the same time and place as Stewart's rally. Colbert also has 14,000 who say they might attend his event. Stewart and Colbert will hold the event on October 30th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. That gives them another month to promote the event and increase their numbers.

Hey if a bunch of liberals want to increase a carbon footprint and pollute the Mall the weekend they should be canvassing neighborhoods for votes, let 1 million show up. And if they beat Beck's number it goes to legitimize him because this event is nothing but a reaction to him. It's sort of like LG's whole argument with Palin and O'Donnell....for someone so insignificant and stupid, they sure waste a lot of their free time on them.

Yeah... i don't know how much experience you've had with facebook RSVPs, but I'd divide that number by 5 at least.

Young liberals are among the laziest people in the planet. I'll bet any amount of money beck is 4 to 1.

I'd say a greater disparity than that. I hope there's a great turnout, but frankly it's a lot easier, and cheaper, to click an "I'm attending" button than it is to drive 9 hours and stay at a hotel.
