Ramar

"Point guard Ramar Smith indicates he now has a qualifying test score, but his admission is still being reviewed by the NCAA clearinghouse."

that's the last I heard of the situation. I dont know enough about this kind of thing to say whether the delay is good or bad.

The longer it goes, the smaller our chances.
I think that's probably true. Although, I think the NCAA is just slow.

Transcripts with multiple schools are an area of emphasis with the 'AA right now. Ramar is going through the Clearinghouse at a bad time. Without the heightened scrutiny brought about by the New York Times and the Washington Post exposes on academic fraud, he would have already been cleared. As it is, I wouldn't put his chances at any better than 50/50. The dorks in Indianapolis will have to deny some players their eligibility to show how "serious" they are about this issue. It's all about saving face for those dweebs.

hat, what exactly was Ramar's issue? We know that he changed schools in the middle of the season but didn't he also miss a lot of time between the two? Is that all we know?

He changed schools in the middle of the year. I've heard wildly divergent information as to how long the lapse between schools was. Some of that may be attributable to the schools having different academic calenders. I keep hearing, from a source at a school that declined to recruit Ramar due to these issues, that a lot of people have questions about the validity of any grades coming out of Ramar's high school in Michigan. Also, that source said any qualifying test score by Smith would be, in his opinion, "dubious."

God I hope Ramar plays next year, because I may very well be moving to Knoxville right in the thick of the basketball season, and I am certainly excited at the prospect of watching him play

I understand that there is a lot of contreversy surrounding this kid. Is it legit and if it is, do we really need that in an upstart program? The media loves to beat UT up already. Just a ? here but should BP just go on and work with what he has and try someone else next year?

No, we need Ramar for next year. He could mean the difference between final 4 and just maybe making the tournament. He would fill a huge void at PG.

You take talent when you can get it. Period. You recruit to win, not to assuage the pundits.

Whoa now, Warrior. Ramar or no Ramar, we're not going to the Final Four. We're, at best, the number four team in the SEC.

I totally agree, but is his "beef" legit? I mean are we looking at taking him now and taking a hit 2 years down the road when he is playing for the wizards?

Behind whom? Florida, Bama, and LSU? You can't convince me that LSU is better than us. I'm not arguing over that. UF and Bama are likely better, but you have to put it on the court and UF couldn't do that against us. Who's to say that Pearl won't have a Spurrier affect against UF. Either way, I think that both of those teams are potential Final 4. Don't tell me that you think the top 4 teams in the NCAA will be in the final 4. Some team will sneak in, UT will have the talent with Ramar.

I guess the a$$whipping the Tigers administered to us and the Final Four berth aren't enough evidence for you?

We beat them the year before. Were we better then? They also lost their PG and top 5 player to the draft. Without Thomas, they don't even make it to the sweet 16 last year.

Darrell Mitchell wasn't their point guard until Tack Minor got hurt. Minor's back. Mitchell and Rolle will have the same type of breakout seasons that Thomas had last year. Florida is the only team in the league that has comparable talent.

Nor do they "whip our ass". Remember the game he had against us?
I remember more about how their perimeter guys strangled Lofton.

I'd take Bama over LSU. Tack Minor, they can have that ball hog. Mitchell or Rolle might, so might Wingate or Passley or Crews or Chism. We'll see. Again, banking on role-players to have breakout seasons is just about as valid an argument as bringing up the history of a team(ala the Fulmerites).

I also remember how Lofton was nothing more than a straight shooter last year and has learned a few new tricks, ala JJ Redick from his SO to JR years.

Mitchell and Rolle were both top 50 players coming out of high school. They were role players only because there were upperclassmen like Davis and Mitchell already in place. If either of those guys had been on UT's roster last year, they would have played 25+ minutes a night.
