Alcoa scored on its first possession, recovered a fumble on Goodpasture's first offensive play and let quarterback Randall Cobb do his thing in a 35-3 win Friday in the Class 2A BlueCross Bowl at Middle Tennessee State's Floyd Stadium.
"There was no coming back," Goodpasture running back Tracy Mayes said. "We played scared. You need heart to beat them. I guess we didn't have the heart."
If this story sounds familiar, there is a reason.
Alcoa (14-1) won its ninth state championship, its state-record fourth consecutive title and third in a row over Goodpasture (13-2), each season defeating the Cougars by at least 28 points.
Goodpasture won three of its four trips to the 2A final between 1995-2001, but has since grown accustomed to the runner-up trophy.
Cobb finished with 127 of Alcoa's 273 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns to pace the Tornadoes, who stormed to a 13-0 lead in the opening 6:33
