In the spirit of the offseason, and please God let me wake up tomorrow and it be football season, rank our rivals.

I will start with what I think the top 3 are, for me anyway, in the last 20 years. If different in different decades, please explain.

1. Florida (hated them Gators when Spurrier was there and hate them now)
2. Georgia (always stings when we lose to the underacheivers)
3. Alabama (Buck Fama)
14. Kentucky (hope they don't beat us for another 20 years)

What say you Vol Nation???

GBO!!!!!

For me, personally:
1) Bama
2) Florida
3) Vandy
4) Georgia

If your top two are not some variation of Alabama and Florida, you're doing it wrong.

I'm not one who thinks the last 10 years have mattered much, so I am looking over the last 100 with these rivals.
1) Alabama
2) Georgia
3) Florida
4) Auburn
5) South Carolina
6) Vandy
7) Kentucky

I may switch three & four, but great list overall.

Major points for not erroneously labeling South Carolina as USC.

Boy does that grind my gears.

USC is in South Central close to the Pacific Ocean and nowhere near the Atlantic Ocean, as the school in South Carolina is. If you're too lazy to type South Carolina then quite staying up so late @ night and get yourself some rest. Then wake-up nice and refreshed, full of vigor & strength, forthrightly prepared to brave the monumental task of typing "South farckin Carolina". I know it can be hard and it has destroyed many a good soul, but I have faith in you and believe you can do it.

But, if it's the middle of the day or in the afternoon or evening and you can't type South Carolina, then you are just pathetic and there may be no help for your imposing laziness and petulance. But one never knows when concerning delicate matters such as the one @ hand. So there could be hope for you yet.

So here we go people, let's try it. All in together now, on the count of 3,

South Carolina.

How hard can it really be?

I just did it. And, with a little bit of help, so can you.

Thank you very much.

Mini rant over.

1) Alabama
2) Florida
3) Auburn
4) Georgia
5) Everyone else.
I would say that if you were a Vol fan prior to 90 this would be your list and that if you didn’t become one until the mid 90’s you would switch Bama and Florida. I really do miss playing Auburn every year.

1. Florida - This team does not deserve an explanation.
2. Alabama - See explanation number 2.
3. Auburn - I liked playing this team. Gave me something else to get excited about.

Kentucky and Vanderbilt are not "rivals" to me. These teams might be rivals to them, but we beat up on them so much that it really doesn't matter. Whoo hoo, Vandy you finally got us a few times the last few years, but the series ain't pretty.

Georgia - Really good team I can have a friendly rivalry with, I guess. Games always seem to be close, but UGA seems to underachieve. Oh well. Its still really fun.

alabubba. I remember fondly the bama nights during my time at UT. I don't recall there being a florida, georgia, etc night. For the uninitiated, bama night was the Friday night before we played alabubba and they would shut down The Strip to automobile traffic and everybody partied in the street.

Would Vandy have been on a list 5 years ago?

1. Florida (divisions made this greater than AL)
2. Alabama
3. Georgia
4. Any Big (little) 10 team (added this for fun)

Outside of those 3, I don't think we really have any other rivalries. If Vandy wins the next 3 then I guess I would add them. Obviously, they consider us fairly high.

I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I am surprised Florida ranks this high for people.

I know what has taken place on the field, but what makes a rivalry a big deal (at least to me) is that it doesn't escape your everyday life.

You run into people who cheer on that school at the post office, at the grocery store, at your child's little league game, your next door neighbor, etc, etc, etc.

Given the geography involved with Florida and Tennessee, I can't imagine losing to Florida is worse than losing to Alabama, Georgia or South Carolina. Unless there are more Gators walking around in the state of Tennessee than I realize.

If we're talking all time here then it's the Gumps by a landslide. I hate Florida as much as the next guy, but they're nowhere near as big a rival as Bama. I'm 30 so I really don't remember the prior years too much before Spurrier got to Florida in the early 90's. One thing I've always understood growing up and to this day is Bama takes the cake for our main rival. I get that awesome "fall Saturday in the South" type of feeling when we play Bama. It's almost unexplainable, but it's one of those rivals that make me proud to be born and raised in small town Tennessee. Its the only game of the year that I care enough about to actually get a big group together, cook out, throw horseshoes, play corn hole, etc.

Historically speaking.. Bama and Florida are top 2.

But I feel that the biggest trait of a rivalry is the mutual distain for the other team.. And you measure it from both sides. One side may hate the other, but if the other doesn't hate them, then it's a one sided rivalry. Saying that, at the current moment you would realistically have to put it like this.

1) Vandy.. They despise us and it's very relevant in-state. In everything they do, they try to measure it up to us. They revel in seeing UT lose moreso than celebrating their own teams wins. Right now we hate when they win in anything and want them to return to nothing, while they still want nothing more than big brother to stay down while they shine. Our biggest rivalry, (RIGHT NOW)

2. UK... I put them this high because we hate them for their basketball program and they hate us for our football program. It's a mutual hate right now.

3. Bama/Georgia.. I put Bama here because we absolutely hate everything about them moreso than any other, but we're not competitive enough with them right now to warrant their hate more than Auburn or LSU, but they would still put UT at 3 right now behind those two even while we are down. Tied with Georgia because I feel we dislike them a good deal and they dislike us due to proximity and having robbed their state of some great talent. Berry's, Da'Rick, ect..

5. Florida.. We hate them, but they haven't lost to us since 2004. There's not much mutual hate.

Having said that, this hate stuff changes quickly. We beat Candy every year, and then they go on a 2 year streak and we hate them. A win against our historical rivals will do the same for us in their eyes.

Gator, I'll explain why it hurts.

Since my birth in 1988, the Gators own the series 18-6.

Bama leads just 14-12.

Now, I don't mind losing to Bama when they absolutely destroy every other team they play and roll on to another NC year after year after year. However, I HATE losing to a 4-8 Florida team. And no matter how bad you guys are, you somehow always beat us. I think it changes soon against both UF and Bama (history shows streaks in the Bama series), but for now, we are Floridas *****.
