Rank the 5 best coaches in the SEC

He doesn't gamble. He's stupid. He just gets away with it because his team is so damn talented. That's because he's in a talent rich state that he does do a good job of keeping a lot of. The call to throw against Auburn in 2007 was so awful he should have been fired on site if it didn't work by a miracle. Gambling is taking a shot at the win instead of the tie. Stupid is passing up the easy shot at the win for the hard shot at the win. I'm not sure how he got this job in the first place.
Yes, he's stupid too. No doubt about that lol. Remember that fake Field Goal where the place holder chucled the ball behind him and the kicker ran in for the score? I consider that a gamble and it paid off. I could be wrong, but I don't often remember coaches going for a 4th and 1 or 2 until he did it against Florida in 2006/2007. Those were other gambles that paid off.

4) Houston Nutt - Led Arkansas to winning seasons and an SEC title appearance. Ressurected (somewhat) a struggling Ole Miss program.

Houston Nutt winning the SEC west was a fluke. It was the result of McFadden/Jones, and a decent defense with a favorable SEC east schedule. LSU wins the SEC west if they don't have to play Florida.

At Ole Miss he inherited a large amount of talent from Ed Orgeron's efforts. He didn't resurrect anything. To his credit he hasn't killed their talent, but he also hasn't done anything amazing with it. We'll see what he does the next few years.

I know you guys are Tennessee fans but you need to look at this question with no bias. You have seen what tennessee is capable of doing (Georgia)and you still think Kiffin did a nice job this year? Kiffin lost to a horrible UCLA game at home, Lost to a florida team when in my opinion should have won, Lost to my Auburn team at home in a night game (Tennessee has better atheletes than Auburn this year), Kiffin lost to an Alabama team he had beat but doesnt know how to coach a field goal squad, and got raped by a decent ole miss team. Tennessee is my second team and i look at this with no bias but i have to believe Chizik did a better job with the talent he had than kiffin did. Tennessee has a top 10 defense and the best RB in the SEC and still lost 5 games!! Kiffin might be in my top 3 coaches in recruiting but not actual coaching.
My top 5
1. Meyer
2. Saban
3. Spurrier
4. Chizik
5. Brookes

no biased? You put Chizik

1 and 2 are whatever as they are both great coaches Personally I think Saban is better based on what he had to work with when he arrived. His team loses to ULM and puts up back to back undefeated regular seasons? Meyer never did that

But Miles, Nutt and the Spurrier of today? Come on, Nutt is horrible, Spurrier is way past being effective and Nutt is...

Bustin' a Nutt twice in the same sentence. Nice.

Johnson gets more out of his team than anyone in the league. This year was bad, due to injuries and best WR not being eligible. Still a GREAT coach!

he gets no more out of them than the previous coaches did. He had a couple good years (for Vandy) and is now slipping back into their normal place

Miles is on the decline. I still give him the nod since he's won titles. Nutt is on there because he has succeeded at Arky and at Ole Miss. When was the last time Ole Miss had back to back winning seasons? Spurrier is included because of his previous achievements as well. He's not doing horrible at USC, but he's not doing any better than Lou Holthhhhhhhh either.

He has four two win seasons. Really getting a lot out of that talent.

Gambles work better when your team is far more talented than everyone else.

Just out of curiosity, what is yalls reasoning in putting Saban 1st? He's between 1-2 no doubt about that. Bama has been a damn good team since he took over, but Florida has as well since Urban took over from the Zook years. In Urban's tenure, he's won 2 national titles (on the verge of winning a 3rd), 2 SEC titles (on the verge of winning a third), coached a Heisman Trophy winner (still in the running to win a second and imo won't).

Saban has resurrected a down LSU program and won a National Title and SEC title, and has led Bama to 2 undefeated regular seasons. Bama lost their bowl game last season.

For those that have posted, please put your reasoning behind why Saban, or Meyer, or Kiffin deserves the number 1 spot.

Because a lot of us credit Floridas success more to Tebow & Strong than to Meyer.

Who to put there, though? Richt? no. Bobby Johnson? As naothe rposter indicated, he returned his entire defense and still managed a 2-10 season. Kiffin, Chizik and Mullen are newbs, so I didn't include them. Brooks? Maybe. Petrino? He's only in his second year and hasn't done too much at Arky yet.

I actually don't think Nutt is horrible. I don't think he is a great coach, but I think there was a limit to what could be accomplished at Arkansas.

If you include previous seasons then Saban is definitely ahead of Meyer IMO. Nutt has won absolutely nothing at any school. Once O's guys are gone we will see how good he is. They'll run him out of the grove in 3 years

With the question you can only count this year.Kif out coached both CUM and CNS.He did not have nothing close to the talent that fla and alabama has and still almost won.

I've heard this many times before, though. I've heard we won't win after Danny W graduates. We won't win after Grossman leaves. We won't win after Leak leaves. Tebow won't succeed in the SEC and will get battered and bruised. Tebow can't throw. We won't win without Tebow.

Only time will tell, though, right? Urban has succeeded at Bowling Green and Utah (although just 2 seasons at each). He's done a good jub of sustaining our program.

Right, and I think I put in my original post thet either one are deserving. You can almost put 1A and 1B because they are both phenomenal coaches.

A side note, though. Isn't what makes a head coach successful the assistant coaches?

Meyer
Saban
Petrino
Kiffin
Mullen

Until Saban wins a big game at Alabama, He'll always be second fiddle to Urban Meyer.

So Auburn started more than 3 walk-ons, and more than 8 different freshman in the course of this season?

Look, Urban and Satan are doing some amazing things right now. Much of the non-sec media thinks Kiffin will be special, but key word is "will be". Petrino can coach, so can Brookes.

Gene Chizik is competing with Mark Richt for the bottom of the barrel. In 2-3 years, neither of those guys will be around. Auburn's 7-5 this year was the best they will do. The 7 wins came from Gus Mahlzon. Maybe Mahlzon should enter this discussion.

Urban is a good coach, but let's face it...he ain't gonna be close to winning 3 titles in 4 years ever again. Tebow is the man.
