Rank the 5 best coaches in the SEC

I didn't say he wasn't a very good coach. I do however beleive that he fell into a perfect storm kind of thing at Florida. As bad as Zook was on the field, at least he recruited well. He didn't leave UF in the same mess Phil left us with. I admittedly don't really know how bad Shula left Bama in terms of talent. Having lived in Florida from 01-08 I do know a little about the Gators deal though. The smartest thing he did was keep Strong. IMHO Charlie Strong deserves more credit than Meyer for Floridas success. If he leaves Florida will have a tough time continuing the kind of dominance they have had recently.

Right!

I like the 3-3-5 D he ran against us, knowing that we were going to run the ball.

I think that Charlie is getting a lot of love this year because the D i unreal, but that has more to do with them have 11 starters that will play on Sundays and 11 backups that probably could as well....loaded!

Yes and no. Strong is a huge reason, imo, but not the only reason. I hope he gets a good HC job because he deserves it. I think Dan McCarney will step in and perform nicely in Strong's place. He led some good defenses at USF and... wasn't it Iowa State as a HC? I don't think we'll see too much of a drop off. plus, he has been recruiting alongside Strong. It's no secret Meyer has been pushing for Strong to get a HC deal.

remember how good Chavis looked when he was absolutely loaded with talent too. Take that away and it get a bit dicey

I was actually refering more to his recruiting and player development abilities, than to Xs and Os abilities. He is a big reason why they have so much talent on def.

Not really...Tebow still won several games himself that season.

He attempted 33 passes, and ran the ball 89 times, he had a little over 800 yards and 13 TD.

Chris Leak threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 23 TD.
Wynn lead the team in rushing with almost 700 yards.

I'm not saying that he didn't help the cause, I'm just saying that he wasn't the main reason they won, I fell like that title was won the back of several players, and the refs for the roughing the passer penalty after Mayo got a pick six that would have probably sealed the game for us.

I agree with you on that for sure, but it's easy to look good when you have that much 1st round talent.

And 86 of the 89 rushing attempts were at critical situations during critical games.....:hi: and btw...it's never been about stats with Tebow...it's the head stuff that has made a huge difference for the gators!

If he leaves we are going to get a lot more defensive recruits out of Florida. Monte Kiffin is a living legend down there. To this point Charlie has helped offset that because of his own reputation. When he leaves that advantage leaves with him.

Really? You have proof?

He may have been the best fullback in the nation that year. That much I will give you.

Do they win the title without him? Probably not, do they win it without Leak? No way.

I don't think that you taking into account Tebow's real contribution to the team...it's more about leadership than any stats....And could they have won it w/o Leak...heck yes!

Well, Tebow (who grew up loving the gators, and being from Jxnville) liked Shula so much he had a tough time picking the Gators. Rolonda McClain was a Shula Recruit, as was Marquiz Maze, Kareem Jackson - but Saban kept those guys in his first class.

He inherited: Greg McElroy, Coffee, T. Grant, Stover, Andre Smith, Taylor Pharr, Javier Arenas. Just to name a few. Saban is a mad recruiter, but he did not walk into a team with no talent, but he has certainly elevated it.

If he leaves I think we are a lock for Luc, although I think that we get him no matter what.

Was he really the leader of that '06 team?

I don't know, serious question for the Gator on here.

Thx for info. I didn't realise Shula had done that well in recruiting.

With who at QB? Tebow? His first year starting he won the Heisman, but they won 8 games.

Maybe Elam also?

Look, Urban and Satan are doing some amazing things right now. Much of the non-sec media thinks Kiffin will be special, but key word is "will be". Petrino can coach, so can Brookes.

It still baffles me that anyone can believe this. He had a losing record at Orgeon. He has a losing record at Kentucky. He is 16-40 in 7 years in the SEC. He has gone .500 in the conference exactly once. He has finished better than 5th in the division exactly twice.

Kentucky's recent "success" comes from a combination of adding a 12th game against Eastern, dropping powerhouse Indiana, and the fact that Louisville stinks again.

Yes maybe Brooks wasnt the best choice but i dont see a better one yet...

Really? I'm having a hard time finding a worse one.

Just out of curiosity, what is yalls reasoning in putting Saban 1st? He's between 1-2 no doubt about that. Bama has been a damn good team since he took over, but Florida has as well since Urban took over from the Zook years. In Urban's tenure, he's won 2 national titles (on the verge of winning a 3rd), 2 SEC titles (on the verge of winning a third), coached a Heisman Trophy winner (still in the running to win a second and imo won't).

Saban has resurrected a down LSU program and won a National Title and SEC title, and has led Bama to 2 undefeated regular seasons. Bama lost their bowl game last season.

For those that have posted, please put your reasoning behind why Saban, or Meyer, or Kiffin deserves the number 1 spot.

Here we go again... OK... urbie won his first NC with Zook's players. After that.. in the state of florida.. I could build on that. Saban has done waaaay more than urbie on a comparative basis to include recruiting. (Not to mention that he has had fewer guys in jail)

As for the hypeman trophy, I think you will find that few in the entire state of Tennessee gives a rat's a$$ about it since the great screwjob. It's about as meaningful as the Nobel Peace Prize or American idol.
